  • New Right Knee in February

    Finally!

I had my left knee replaced at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg WV about a year or so ago. Though it aches at times, it is so much better than pre-replacement.

My right knee has been bad just as long, but it was not swelling and painful like the left until about 6 months ago.

Yesterday I went to see the Orthopedic Surgery guys at VAMC Charleston SC and the surgery chief took all of 5 minutes to get around to asking me if I wanted the right knee replaced. They took some measurements, talked about stretched ligaments while looking at the x-ray pictures. Then made notes about what parts to order. Joked with me about it being the same as fixing a blown bearing in the wheel of a car.

So, on February 2, 2017 I have a full day of prep consults with various specialists, and on February 14th they will hack up my right knee joint and put new joint parts in.

Should be good to go by middle of April, in time to go to Cliff's rally in Arkansas and then on to Monterey CA to visit my buddy as usual.

The Tri Glide Ultra just keeps running better and better the more miles I put on it. Yesterday, without the trailer, it went over 220 miles on a tank of gas, or a bit better than 40 mpg. When it was new it could only do 200 miles per tank. I also noticed that it pulls the trailer easier. Still need to get the 117 c.i. SE upgrade done, for the mountains, but only for that.

Anyway, very glad they are going to go ahead and replace the knee. Then both legs will be straight, and the same length, and won't grind/wobble when I walk.

Re: New Right Knee in February

Best Wishes on the new knee and for a swift recovery from the surgery! We live in a great age when you can get a new body part "artificially", that's for sure. I hope everything goes BETTER than planned!

Speaking of better, congrats on the Tri Glide Ultra's bump in gas mileage now that it's broken in. I certainly would not complain at 40 MPG. My Triumph 1200 never got any better than 30, and it gets more like 25 when fully loaded and cranked up to 75 MPH in any kind of wind. Not good at all, obviously. The Honda GL-500 Interstate manages 60 MPG, but it's not as comfortable to me at 70 MPH because of the higher revs it takes for that bike to get up to highway speeds. It's big brother, the GL-650 (I am looking at buying one) has totally different gearing and 15 more horsepower, so it is a much more comfortable highway cruiser than the 500 and you actually gain 5 mpg over the 500 average because of the lower RPM. Yes, I like classic bikes, but a new Harley is also a very temping bike to look at.

Good luck with the surgery. I know it will have to feel better than what you got now! Lots of PT and you will be back on the bike traveling next summer!

I'm having the same problem but haven't gotten up the nerve to go do it. !'m retired Navy so most of my things happen at Wilford Hall at Lackland AFB. The price is right. Good luck with the knee.

Best of luck on your second time around. Four months ago my doctor did both of mine at the same time and I'm loving it! Even thinking about going from three back to two wheels now!!!

I had left hip done 3 years ago this coming January. Would not go back to old hip joint for anything. Only thing I can not do is run! But at 71 who wants to run anyway except to play with grandkids. Good luck and do ALL the PT..

Yep. Been there with left knee already. This time I know exactly how it will go. I'll even get on the trike a month earlier than I thought I could have the first time.

Hmmm.... VA Orthopedics told me they couldn't fix my service-connected ankle, so I envy you!
