Trailer hitch for KLR650?

Anyone have any good ideas for a trailer hitch on a KLR650?

I want a trailtail really bad, but it's almost $1,500 to get one to my door and that's without the box which I don't need.

My main goal is to carry a mountain bike, small cooler, and other camping gear. I've considered so many options of mounting the bike somewhere on the KLR, but it just doesn't work. I don't like any of the options I've found. Don't like it on back sideways because it's just too dangerous having it hanging out both sides. Don't like the other way of having it straight off the back either with it hanging way out behind the bike. I think a trailer is a much better idea.

Who knows, I may just flip the bill for the trailtail. It has all the stuff worked out for a KLR650, even the hitch and new wheel axle.

Re: Trailer hitch for KLR650?

I've got to ask what kind of trailer? I'm betting home built on both hitch and trailer as I doubt anyone makes a hitch for a KLR and building it yourself is the only way you'll get a trailer light enough. I looked at the trail-tail's too, but couldn't see myself spending that kind of money.

I wish I could be more help, good luck.

You might try the guys at DMC Sidecars. They make custom stuff for motorcycles. They are located in Washington state. Here's a link to their site: http://www.dmcsidecars.com/
I have one of their hitches on my BMW. It went on easy and does a fine job of pulling my trailer. Good luck with your quest.

Welcome to the site wanderer. If you haven't checked already the folks over on KLRWorld might have some ideas as well. Be sure and keep us informed, as this sounds like an interesting project! We love winter projects with lots of pics!

Sorry for the smart-ass answer.

Here's a link to the hitch I built. You might be able to adapt the concept to your bike.
