Re: Loft Mountain Campground, Shenandoah NP

Just stayed at Loft Mtn over the weekend, had planned on Big Meadows but it was full. We were at site A61..close to the bathroom, but for showers you had to go to the camp store (not an easy walk) and use the pay showers ($1.75 for 5.75 minutes). The site we had picked did not have any bear proof food storage and our cooler filled with just ice and water was confiscated by the park rangers. They apologized for taking it and not realizing that we were on a motorcycle. Not a big issue, but we had just finished a 4 mile hike on the AT and were rather thirsty! To get into town to grab food was a15 mile ride North on the Skyline Drive (@ 35MPH) and then 7 additional miles to the town. Camp store had plenty of supplies and firewood..but be sure to get there early as they close at 5:30pm. Using our federal pass, we were able to avoid the $25 entrance fee to Skyline Drive and our campsite was only $7.50 per night. There were restricted generator sites, but all of the others site had specific times that generators could be run.

Looks like a nice spot. Were the drives paved, or is that a roadway...?
