It’s a little farther out but we stayed at Wyatt’s Hideaway in Belle Fourche. It’s normally not crowded unless you go during the rally, great owner. When we camped there he wouldn’t let us pitch tents due to the weather that was coming in, set us up in one of the cabins for $10.00 more than a tent site! Good thing as big storm blew in with big hail!

I'd also recommend custer state park. I've stayed at blue bell campground, lovely place nestled in the tall pines. The other also stayed at Grace Coolidge campground, pretty nice place but close to the road so during the day was pretty noisey. I'd also recommend Bakers Bakery and Cafe for coffee and sweet roll for breakfast, located in town of Custer.

Rob if you stay at Wyatt’s there are a couple of decent places to eat in Belle Fourche if y’all don’t feel like cooking. Go into town and take a right and there is a pretty good Chinese place on the left. I don’t remember the name but there is a good steak and BBQ place there too if they are still open.

Re: Where to camp near Mount Rushmore..??

Well, I just got back from our trip, and had a great time. We camped at KOA Palmer Gulch.

Although it is a very busy campground and has more people there than my home town, it was very good. The showers and washrooms seemed to be getting cleaned every 3 hours. They were never dirty. Lots of hot water after a day of riding. Nightly music for entertainment.

The only downfall of the trip was it was too hot. Every day was between 90 and 98, which I'm not used to in our Canadian climate.

The Leesure Lite pulled great. Out plans were to stay in a motel every 3rd night for shower and soft bed, which worked out except on the way home. The 98F day of riding was cut short and needed air conditioning and cold shower.

Total ride to get there (we took mostly secondary roads) was 2156 kms (1340 miles) Once there we did Needles highway twice, Iron Mountain road (which was terrible due to the re-surfacing with the chip and seal treatment), and Spearfish Canyon Loop to Deadwood and Sturgis Indian (for the T-shirt.) We took in the Mount Rushmore site.

The 4th day we rode down to Custer and saw Crazy Horse Memorial, (gonna need another 200 years at the rate they are going) and then up to Rapid City for a visit to the Indian dealer (had to get another T-shirt) Took more freeway on the way home, and total mileage was 4350 kms (2700 miles) and 10 days.

All in all, had a great ride, no mishaps, met some nice riders, and look forward to doing it again some year.

Thank you. Always best to prepare for the worst, but I'm probably just being overly concerned.

Watch out for the Mule Deer especially in the morning, I about kissed a couple milling around the side of the road.
