Just for grins........Our first trip up the Alcan was in June of '78 in a '76 Mustang. The wife, our dog and me, along with every thing we could stuff in our little car. The folks that rode bike up the Alcan back then, had their work cut out for them. It was all dirt to the Alaska Border except for a few miles either side of Whitehorse. We couldn't wait to hit the pavement in Alaska. Once we hit the pavement, it was so rough, we wished we were back on the dirt. Here is some pics of the road.......

First off there is no "wrong route". I have gone a similar route to yours, but I don't like cities.......especially Chicago. The last time we took a bike from NY to AK ('02) we went north of the great lakes, entered Canada. at Toronto. I will probably take the route that same route this time too.......BUT haven't made up my mind for sure yet.

I have to agree with Wheeldog. Your route looks good with the exception of Chicago. Most years I am taking trips back to see family in Michigan. I would cut north into Michigan and either take a ferry across Lake Michigan or continue on to the UP and drive highway 2 to Minot.

    Wheeldog,
Your pictures brought back memory's of my first ride down the Alcan. It was on a brand new 1987 Goldwing. From the Whitehorse area where I catch the Alcan it was about 300+ miles of gravel road. It was nasty at times between dust, mud and bugs but I made it. I wished I had fitted a bug/rock guard like your Mustang

Yep, Chicago has to be the worst place in the states to drive. When ever we went out to Sturgis we'd cut South and go under it. Saved a lot of time.

I agree with others avoid Chicago, I am heading north just past Detroit and going thru the Upper part of Michigan and take the ferry across or just ride up to the Makinac Bridge. Also I am heading a lil west when I get into Canada toward Calgary to ride through Jasper and Banff National Parks. I used this website http://www.northtoalaska.com/ granted this is not set in stone for me. While I do not if this route will be better or worse, just hoping more scenic.

looks good, of course I can say from first hand experience but you are avoiding Chicago which is what I know I want to avoid. I made the trip around the lakes using that same road and enjoyed it. I am reading a post about Jasper and Banff parks on another forum to get more of a feel.
