Just wondering, is anyone else attending the 49'er Rally this year? To beat the holiday traffic a friend and I will be heading out a couple of day's early camping the first night near Mammoth. Friday heading up and over Tioga Pass (Hwy 120) into Yosemite then out the other side and on to the event. Once again to avoid traffic our return will be on Tues. Have been watching the weather and looks to be picture perfect.

Hello all, I just discovered this site a week ago and have found it to be very interesting and informative. My first bike was a 1967 Triumph Tiger Cub that I got used back in 1973 at the ripe old age of 13. Well, I must say that old scoot got me hooked and I have never looked back, and that has been something like 17 bikes ago. Now I have a DR 650 and a vstrom. I love this motocamping and do it frequently, with my shorter trips being around western Montana and Northern Idaho.
If any of you are ever in my neck of the woods give a shout, I always have "camping" space, also a garage / tools, bike lift, etc..

I'm pulling a 2012 TimeOut Deluxe Camper, with a 2008 Harley Ultra Classic. While returning (2 up) from our second camping trip with this rig we had a blowout in the sidewall, on the rear tire on the bike. We were on a four lane state highway, traveling at 60 MPH when the tire blew, and was able to scrub the speed down to about 40 MPH (I'm guessing) before the bike went over hard on the right side, and we slid along the pavement. Other than a few broken bones and some pretty nice road rash, we survived, and are celebrating life, each and every day. The bike immediately began violently fishtailing back and forth when the tire went, and I was using the front brake to slow it down, and I even tried the fred flintstone method to no avail.

The bike had some damage, all on the right side, but nothing really substantial. The crash bar did it's job admirably. I also believe the TimeOut helped save us, as having the extra two wheels behind us, kept us upright longer than I could have without it, and when the bike slammed down to the pavement, the TimeOut went over on it's side too, and the weight of the trailer greatly reduced the distance we slid. The camper also had minimal damage, mostly road rash and a busted hinge that closes the top of the camper.

The tire was almost ready for replacement, but probably had another couple thousand miles of life left. I'm very conscientious about replacing the tires when they get close, as we all know, we only have two.

I had a lot of weight on the bike and the camper, but hadn't weighed it, so I can't accurately tell you what the weights were. The campers cargo space was completely full, we had the bag on the roof that TimeOut sells, and both saddlebags and the tour pack were pretty full. Add my 300 pounds and the reported 170 pounds of my girlfriend to the equation as well.

I'm pretty sure that the weight was my primary mistake, but I've had some pretty knowledgeable people tell me that I would have noticed the overweight issue as soon as I took off, by the loosey/goosey handling of the handlebars, and I didn't experience that at all. As usual it was a little bit of lag getting away from stop signs and red lights, but pulled fine at highway speeds after getting out of first gear.

I had checked and corrected air pressure in all the tires (bike and camper) before we left for the trip, but didn't check it again on the return leg. I've never weighed the rig, or the trailer, or the tongue weight.

I'd appreciate the opinions of you experienced trailer tuggers. If you can tell me the best way to weigh it, I'd appreciate that too. The bike is still being repaired, and I fully intend to get on the road again as soon as we're all healed, but I also want to do everything possible to minimize the chances of repeating this experience. I'm a big boy and can accept the criticism if it's constructive, because I need this information, and can't think of a better place to find the answers. I fully intend to be the resident expert on trailer weight/packing/loading before we go out again. Appreciate your help.

We have been wanting to go camping recently, but work has gotten into the way too many times. Both my job and her's. Mine because I was doing some work on Friday evenings and her's because she was getting a lot of Saturday's & Sunday's to work. But this weekend..I don't have any work on Friday and for her...well...she decided that the job was not what she wanted and resigned. So HOPEFULLY we will be camping this weekend. Should know for sure later today!!:D

Wanted to introduce myself, as I believe I'll be spending a lot of time on this forum, learning from those more experienced than I, and maybe helping out someone with less experience in time.

My name is Kyle E. Barnette Sr., and I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I ride a 2008 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic, and tow a 2012 Timeout Deluxe Camper. I almost always do so two-up, with my girlfriend, who likes to ride almost or perhaps more than I do. :)

Retired with almost 36 years of service to the United States Government, including enlisted service in the U.S. Navy, miscellaneous civil service jobs at a Navy Base and an Air Force Base, and the bulk of my service as a U.S. Customs Special Agent. After 911, our agency was foolishly (IMHO) brought into the new Department of Homeland Security, and merged with Immigration to create Immigration and Customs Enforcement. I've lived and worked as a Special Agent and Supervisory Special Agent in Alabama, Georgia, Arizona, and Louisiana, and worked undercover and/or investigative assignments all over the country.

Looking forward to traveling our great country, taking my time and really seeing places away from the Interstate and the big cities. Like to do bike rallies, but gradually leaning towards less crowds and more riding. Pleased to make your acquaintance.

I camped there this past weekend. nice large sites. drive in is pretty vertical on a dirt road but a 2.5'wide sidewalk in the road for the bikes. the men's room has one sink, one shower, one john. that was ok this trip with only 4 campers. the owner is a very nice guy. i was able to get ATT cell coverage without having to walk far from my tent. verizon works all over i think. one problem that will be a negative for some is the roosters. the neighbors have roosters that crow at 0325. about 3 or 4 call back and forth a few time and quit. then about 0530 all the roosters start and continnue until sun up. neighbors also have a dog pen and they bark a bunch too at night. the problem is, the c/g owner has no control over any of it. the only thing that would bother me is the lack of restrooms. hopefully he will put in a few more as he expands up the mountain. $14 a night for 2 tents. hammock friendly too.

The other day I found the set of rear brake pads that I had taken to Alaska with me while going through some of my camping gear. I looked at the original pads that still had a little life left, but changed them while I was adjusting the chain.

The pads made a big difference in the rear brakes on this bike. I don't know if the original pads had been glazed since I bought the bike, or if the complaints on the internet are true about them feeling "wooden". I had picked up a set of EBC "Double H" compound pads from Murph's kits and now the bike actually has some progression in the pedal, instead of just off or on. Once they get completely bedded I can only think they will get better. I had used these on the front and it was an improvement, just not as dramatic as the rear.
