I will try to get some pics of the bike before I leave out on a trip to Deals Gap with my camping gear.

Looks like you packed a bit more for a 8 day trip :)

Big :ups: should see me Friday for Cabelas and Monday for Campmor, then I can start working on my packing. Mine will probably look like the Beverly Hillbillys

On the 8 day trip I brought my big ol air mattress and pillow to use sleeping on the floor. With the outrageous price mark-ups on motels Daytona has during the bike events, and speed weeks we get a room with 2 double beds and a kitchen. Two of us sleeps on air mattresses that we bring with us. I had to leave one saddle bag empty to put the cold weather clothes in as we went south. It was in the lower 30's the morning that picture was taken.:cold1:

I have to admit I don't know much about Harleys, but I like the way that style looks. They're just a bit to heavy for me and I don't know how well they'd handle a couple hundred miles of bad gravel road. Before I bought my DR I stopped and looked at a Sporster, but the salesman said I didn't want it, it was a "girls" bike. I thought that was an odd way to sale motorcycles since it was the closest they had to what I wanted. Just as well, it would really have looked odd after I put motorcross bars and nobbies on it.

Guy, I really like the style of the Road King. It had to serve several functions for me to justify buying it. You can strip off the windshield, passenger back rest, and luggage rack in about 5 seconds for all three parts and you have a naked standard. Put it all back on and it's a basic touring mount. It's basically the same bike as the "Electra Glide" touring series without all the bells and whistles. What I like about the bike is it reminds me of my early days of motorcycling. It's has that 2 wheels and an engine basic kind of feel. I have ridden my Harley on packed gravel roads and it's not too bad, but I wouldn't want to do it for more than 10 miles at a time. I have ridden one of my friends Gold Wings and I have to say that it would be the BEST way to jam across the country with minimal stops. I loved the stereo, even though I almost ran in a ditch playing with it. But on the other hand, I kind of thought it was like driving a convertible Honda Accord, if they made one. No offense to the Wing riders. The wife and I really like the Road King, it's a laid back way of just cruising down the highway all day. I think the wife likes it more than I do, and she just rides pillion. I mentioned trading it for a BMW R1200GS and she quickly informed me that "You're not trading off my Road King".

A lot of the salesmen are like that. I think they have TDS (Tiny D**k Syndrome). That's why I ALWAYS deal with a woman salesperson if there is one at the store. They are usually more informed on the product you are looking to buy instead of trying to be clever or cool. I can't understand why any dealer would keep someone on the payroll who didn't know the product they were selling. I was considering a Sportster to ride to Alaska and was thinking of doing just what you said with the bars and knobbies.:p I finally decided that even the Sporty would be too heavy and there aren't many choices as far as tires go without changing wheels. Just too many things to change. That's why I have decided on the Suzuki DL650 V-Strom. I think it will do everything I need it to, even some light off road riding. I've seen pictures of Strom's in some pretty nasty places, so I think I'll do fine on gravel or dirt roads. It's been a few years since I owned my old Honda CR250R but I think the dirt work will come back to me.
