After reading a few posts where I saw beer mentioned I just have to ask. Does anyone have a favorite after ride drink they pack with them on the trip? I usually have a large flask of Don Eduardo Anejo Tequila, or some 100 proof Knob Creek sippin Whiskey for setting around the campfire after dinner and a long days ride. I'm having some Wild Turkey Rare Breed as I type right now.:D Maybe that explains the question.:p

We usually grab a couple beers and take them back to the campground. Don't want to drink
too much because you'll have to get up in the middle of the night or you won't feel 100%
during the next day's ride.

I alway's have a big old can of Fosters packed in ice at the bottom of my ice chest. Its the second thing I do after first getting my tent and sleeping situation all squared away. Later while preparing dinner I get out my flask of Absolute and mix it with a little sugar free energy drink like Rock Star, monster, or Red Bull. Just a couple drinks, nothing major. After dinner I follow it up with a nice hot cup of espresso.
Nothing like roughing it while camping from the bike.:D
I didn't mention the wine. I always have a nice bottle of 2 buck Chuck along, they make a nice Shiraz . I only open it if I don't feel like its an Absolute afternoon or there are friends along.

I usually pack a soft sided cooler that fits in my saddlebag with clothes & camping gear. Then when I get to the park I unload everything, set up camp and take off to the store and grab something for breakfast, a pint of crown, cokes, a bag of ice and a snack. I'll usually polish off 1/2 pint of crown per night. I don't have a drinking problem, I have a camping problem! :D

I carry a flask of Forty Creek Canadian Whisky and take a few sips before bedtime.
Once, I had a few sips in Kit Carson NF in the middle of nowhere, all alone, when a friendly 17 yr old blue eyed blonde in a bikini walked up & started chatting away. I had to look at the flask twice in disbelief! She was camping with her parents a bit down the hill & around the corner.

A beer or two at the end of the day, sitting around the camp site.

When I had a wing and pulled the camper I normally had a few beer's in the cooler, nice when sitting around after a days ride. Now as age creeps up and the bladder isn't what it once was beer is mostly out for me. A plastic bottle of whiskey is nice now and packs away nicely, the problem is when sitting around the camp site sharing some riding experiences or stories of any kind seems like the drinks flow to the point that the bottle is empty before you know it. Fun while it lasts but the next day or two can be kinda tough.

LOL.. yeah, that's why we stick to the beer.. 1 or 2 is enough to just smooth out the edges without having to pay for it the next day.

There was a time when a sip or two of apricot brandy was nice on a cold evening before turing in.
;)
Backpacking taught us a few tricks.
Hot chocolate sure tastes good in the evening and you can make it with boiled water...
Take one of those 'seal a meal' pouches and fill it with brandy and then seal it into 2" strips... cut the strips and make brandy and hot chocolate drinks.
I haven't done this motocamping because I will usually bring a long a few beers... but, I like to drink them with (or before) dinner.

Which by the way is the ADVrider DVD (Death Valley Daze) event in Death Valley weekend after next at Furnace Creek. Anyone else going?

I have a Nalgene flask that I carry Bombay Saphire Gin or some Hendricks Gin and then a couple of small bottles of tonic. We have a rule about not drinking until we are off the bikes. But whether we are camping or motel-ing it's more expensive to buy from a bar or locally. It also seems that there are a lot of dry areas in the south and you may not find anything locally. Always like to be prepared. After a hot summer ride, it's nice to drop the clothes, go to the pool with a drink before getting cleaned up for dinner (which we usually try to walk to at that point...:o ).

For moderate fireside sipping after I'm done for the day, I usually have a pint bottle of Johnny Walker. I normally keep Red Label around the house, but I sometimes like to pony up for Black on a motocamping trip. Beer is nice too, but it's a bother to keep it cold and I'm never in the mood to hit a store at the end of the day.
I'd like to find something better to keep it in that the glass bottle though.

The secret to avoiding mornings where you head won't fit in that helmet is not to go to bed until you've sobered up. I get out the espresso pot and have a cup or two, get up and move around while enjoying the show myself well before finding the sleeping bag.:D

When my buddy and I camp, we have a routine. We get to the site and one of us dumps gear and heads out to the last grocery store we saw on the way in. Buy meat for the grill (whatever looks good - steak, brats, fish, etc.), a side dish, beer and ice. Of course sometimes if we know we'll be camping way out in the boonies we'll stop on the way.
I'm sort of picky about my beer. It doesn't have to be a $9 six-pack of microbrew, but it damn sure can be if that's the only thing we can find with any flavor. Of course there are times when the pickins are slim, so Heineken will do in a pinch, it's the only beer I know of that tastes better in the can!
My buddy is a Jack Daniels fanatic. He has had 4 - 6 ounces every nigh before bed for the last 20 years. I usually stick to beer but when he pulls out that flask (he actually carries three of them and on long trips we end up finding a liquor store for replenishment) I can't resist a little taste of sweet home Tennessee.

If I did that I'd never get any sleep! Not only would it take till 4am to walk off the Jack, but one shot of caffeine would keep me up past that. I get my two cups of java in the morning and that's it.
The way I avoid a hangover is, well, besides not drinking way too much (splitting a 6-pack two ways plus the JD nightcap is about right), is drinking a nice heaping helping of water before climbing in the tent. It works for me.
Some SoCo and or Parrot Bay over ice or straight up for that matter.

Me too, I tend to like Mexican beers, but with my diet I have been drinking Miller Light as a stand by at home. I also like Fosters, maybe I just like the big can.:D
I will have to try Heineken in the can, uh, not in the toilet, but a canned Heineken, you know what I mean. Oh hell, now we are cooking and drinking in the can.:p (See cooking in can post)
I have found that when drinking the hard stuff, the better the booze, the less of a hang over you get, so stay away from the cheapo stuff. If you are on a trip you are going to buy a small amount anyway, so I say go for the good stuff. I hardly ever get a hangover anymore unless I drink an excessive amount of beer.

I'm kinda new here, at least in posts not in lurking. But, you guys have hit on a subject dear to my heart. My usual nightly ration is 2-3 gimlets and perhaps a taste of Jack before bed. Gimlet: 3oz Vodka and enough Roses Lime juice to color it a bit and shake with ice. My biggest problem is getting ice -- I have a hard time imagining coolers big enough to hold "a frozen gallon jug and some other stuff". I do however, have a lexan martini glass and a shaker. I never have a problem with head size in the morning. My aging body (70+) does usually drag me out of bed in the night.
BTW: lots of good info on this board -- thanks.

Where is Thunderbird wine sold?
Answer
I thought they stopped making it..I sure haven't seen any for the last 20 years at least. It used to be sold in carry-outs everywhere.
Answer
It use to be made in California, but the above poster is probably correct in saying it may be discontinued.
Answer
It's still made, just not as common. If you want to find some go to areas with high bum population/traffic.
Answer
The above poster is correct and if you go onto: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-end_fortified_wine it will give you the history of Thunderbird Wine.
Here is an address you might try to see what stores still do sell Thunderbird Wine:
Greenwood Lake Wines 2019 Greenwood Lake Tpk. Hewitt, NJ, 07421
Phone: (973) 728-3692
It appears that Seattle and San Francisco still do carry Thunderbird Wine.

When I backpacked a lot, the routine for our group was to pack in some Irish Cream. Dump the packs after camp was set up and we ate, then take a stove, hike back up to a point, brew up some coffee and sweeten the deal with the irish cream and sit out on the bald and look at the lights on Cades Cove. One of us would bring the Curevo Gold and OJ and drink that too. Sure made the feet feel a little better.
When I was in the Army, our medics would inject the fruit they would pack out to the field with Vodka.

It depends on my mood and the surroundings.
If there is a lot of food, I prefer Gin and Tonic, especially if it's a hot day.
If it's cold, Dr. McGillicuddy's Mentholmint.
I usually have a flask of Jagermeister with me, but prefer it very cold.
Another trick I've learned is that if you mix whiskey, buy Rye. It has more of a bite to it than most whiskeys so you tend to mix it lighter.
OK, I'm thirsty now.
And of course, beer. My favorite beer is Other People's. :D

If I need to do some work on my bike in the evening I'll usually stick with beer as I can become forgetfull on the good stuff....like putting the distributor cap back on after I am done........

What I have to wind down at the end of the day usually depends on the temp. A cold beer tastes the best after a hot day, but after a cool day I like something a bit stronger.
If I need to do some work on my bike in the evening I'll usually stick with beer as I can become forgetfull on the good stuff....like putting the distributor cap back on after I am done........

Indianscout I have found another one for you to try. If you like the American Honey, here is another to give a try that costs a little less.
It's called Red Stag from Jim Beam, again it's only 80 proof but it's flavored with natural Cherry. A buddy poured me one, and before I took the first sip I thought ugh, and had flashbacks to my teenage days of drinking cherry vodka! :p But I was pleasantly surprised, it tastes a lot like the Wild Turkey but isn't quite as heavy tasting. Not something I would drink everyday but it's pretty good! Try a sample bottle the next time you are at your local adult beverage store. P^

So for my second post here, first one was intro, I come to where you talk about the evening partaking of spirits. No really I don't think I'll fit in here.
I'm drown to the bourbon whiskeys like many other here it seems. Two years ago one motocamping trip was dedicated to the the subject in fact. We went to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Enjoyed most distilleries. My two favorites are Woodford Reserve and Markers Mark. I highly recommend stooping if you are ever in that area. One to avoid is Wild Turkey. I can honestly say I stopped drinking the stuff after seeing the place. An other good one is ole Jack Daniel's.
Usually I have a few flasks tucked away of two or three of the above for the cold nights.
If it's hot I just drink water.

I'm going to bring the post back to life as I sit here waiting for spring with a glass of Blackberry Brandy..A beer or two after the day has ended is good for the sole. A bag of chips also hits the spot.......TD :fire4:

I had to laugh. As I read this, I'm watching the evening news while finishing a glass of McGillicudy's Mentholmint with a small bowl of chips.

Steve
I always found it really disgusting how peeps can drink and ride all night during bike nights in any locality...have a couple, move on to the next bar and so forth...if ya have to drink, ride, get to your destination then settle in and have some but don't drink and drive or ride....

Yeah the recovery rate the morning after isn't what it used to be. A couple cold Coors Lite are nice but if I don't have any ice a nice bottle of Shiraz goes down pretty good. Irish cream in the coffee is an excellent whitener if you can't keep your cream on ice too.

as I sit here in the twilight days of my 40th decade I have found myself leaving behind the alcohol of my 20's and 30's like Wild Turkey,Bacardi 151 Everclear 190,Old Granddad,Yukon Jack,Makers Mark and Jim Beam Special Reserve
I find myself drawn back to my teen years and the the delightful flavors of fermented fruits
I really enjoy local Ohio wines I will bring a few bottles up to Mich in Aug. my favorite winery is http://www.debonne.com/our_wines.shtml they do sell on line I highly recommend the semi=sweet whites like the Delaware , River Blanc and in a red the River Rouge is great
as I sit here reminiscing I am drinking a glass of Amish made wine from Sugarcreek Ohio http://www.breitenbachwine.com/ I am sipping their Blueberry wine now and I have a bottle of their cherry which I also find tasty

Believe it or not, I saw a fifth of that at a wedding reception lately! I went to the wedding and found out quickly I was overdressed. :o I thought I was dressing up, wearing a shirt with a collar and a pair of Dockers. Then I saw the Groom in a pair of overalls, I won't even tell you what the bride was wearing!

Wow! ... You are bringing at least six bottles? ...
I'll be lucky if I can afford to bring much more than one ...
well the Breitenbach is only around $11 a bottle the others if i go to the winery instead of a store will run from $9-$12 a bottle and the winery is only 12 miles from home 2 miles from my beer drinking buddies house
hehe his wife is a fellow wino we make him drive us to the wineries (except Debonne now brews beer too Damn )

I would set down with a bottle of Iron City beer, shot of VO. Then I stopped the beer, I would have a shot or two of VO over ice. Then I added water to the shot of VO. Now I have a big glass of ice water. With Heart problems I can't have any alcohol at all. Frankly I don't miss it at all. But I never really was into alcohol that much. I never wanted to dull my senses when I was doing the thing I liked most. I guess you call that high on life.

If you're camping, you should have the best stuff.
Highland Park 18 year old Scotch.....$100 a bottle! Celebrate the fact that you are having fun!

If it's cold out, I'm firin' up the decaf and maybe putting in a little chocolate or something. Hot days, I might have an O'Doul's in the cooler.
Works for me.

Seeing as I rarely drink alcohol anymore, I usually drink either Tea/Hot Chocolate if it's cool out, or some lemonade/large mouth Gatorade(pee bottle)
On occasion, if I am base camping, or staying put at one campsite for 2, or more nights and all the stars line up in the correct formation, I might imbibe in some Jose Cuervo.

Beer for me. I usually pick up a few cold ones in the afternoon and evening and have a drink around the fire ... nice and relaxing. Even better if I can get some locally brewed stuff!
