Lake Tawakoni State Park
Overnighter

Click here to attend. (http://www.motocampers.com/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=9&day=2008-2-2&c=1)

What is the purpose of this event?

Motocampers Seminar - Some How To's - Very informal
Agenda:

1pm - Basic campsite setup/takedown.

To have a 1-day event at a State Park to allow those thinking about camping
see what others bring along, how they pack and how easy camping
can be. Since this is also during the cold weather season, it will be a chance
to try out your gear and find out just how good it is.

Get there Saturday, setup camp, hang out with everyone, cook some dogs,
sleep in the cold, then pack up and head home in the morning.

True...I don't know if they do group rates like hotels do as I've never had what would be considered a large group at a campground. However, I'll give them a call and check on it.

Glad to hear it, welcome to the site.

It will be rescheduled if there is ice. A little rain is okay with me but since the focus is to get people out to see everyone's setups as well as maybe their first MC camping attempt, I'd probably reschedule if it rains too. I don't mind camping in the rain but it does make more of a mess and I'd say 90% of the time, if not better, I've not camped in the rain. I'd hate for someone's first experience to be a bad one.

I'm going to plan to have a little seminar starting at 1pm. I'll more than likely be at the campground the night before so I'll demonstrate taking down the tent/gear and packing it up on my bike. Then, I'll set it back up.

Does anyone have anything else they'd like to show? Different gear, bags, techniques, etc?
What we can do is once I'm done, have people talk about the kind of bike they have and
how they pack. I'm not expecting everyone to take down their tent again after they just
put it up, but maybe bring the bag(s) you use or gear etc...

Any ideas?

I am not sure if we can make it or not yet, still working on my better half. Just wondering if us trailer type campers are welcome at this event? I am setup for tent or trailer(BunkHouse). I might have better luck convincing "my decider" to go if she can have her camper with a heater. LOL!! But, who knows she might decide tenting is ok too?
BTW, I noticed you posted it over on TWT Forum also. Good deal! We know some of them also. Been on a couple of Pie Runs and some of the M&G's.

Unfortunately, my "decider" has reminded me that we have prior committment on Sunday. That we have to be in Belton by 9:00 AM. So that knocks us out of camping this time. I suggested that we camp then ride to Belton from there? She said that is riding too far way to early, that is coming from a lady who has completed one SS1000 and getting ready to do another. Oh, well next time.
We would still like to ride over and hangout for awhile and meet all of you if that is OK?

Joe, I appreciate your doing this event. It is quite timely for me. I'll be there on Saturday, but not for the overnight. I am planning a solo ride to Truckee, CA in May-June. It will be my first attempt at multiple night camping on the motorcycle. I have a tent, air mattress and a too bulky sleeping bag. I'm really looking forward to seeing what is the minimum amount of equipment I'll need to survive.

Guys, this is my first post here. I have been lurking for a few days?great site. I am working on a kitchen pass for this event. This is a great idea?especially for someone like me who hasn?t camped in years. I will probably come by truck since my camping gear is not too compact. And, I may trailer my KLR. I am going to go back and review the post again but I do have some questions:

1) I have never been to the state park, how will we gather at Tawakoni? I guess I should just look for the bikes.
2) Food (a very important question), will be a group cook out Saturday night?
3) What time Saturday should I plan on getting there?

Thanks, sorry about all the questions.

PS, I live in Duncanville. I ride a Venture, KLR650 and a WR450F

Mark, we'll be glad to have ya.. I plan on getting to the park Friday evening sometime, gotta get off work and battle traffic first. 1/2 of the park is apparently under construction but scheduled to open on 1/31 but it's their slow season for sure so I don't think lack of sites will be an issue. Yes, just look for the bikes.

We may have a ride into the nearest town and get some food for cooking at the park or some may eat in town, there's no set agenda for this.

I plan on doing a seminar (informal discussion/show and tell) at 1pm on Saturday. I'm sure others will chime in during that on things that work for them. It looks like it will be a good mix of big/small bikes as well as those that pack light and heavy. I'll take as many pictures as I can too.

This won't be the last one of these we do.. maybe one every other month...

Looks like my first attempt.

Wind is gonna snatch you around with that tarp wing hanging out there. I spent a day on the Florida turnpike getting snatched around with a chair bag hanging out like that.

Would it be possible to fold that tarp under your load?

Mellow
01-27-2008, 09:22 AM
Wow... I'd say kill the table/chair... there's alway something to sit on at most campgrounds as well as a concrete or metal/wood picnic table.

Why is the tarp so long? That thing must be huge. I'd ditch that as well. Bring a rainsuit w/hood if you're worried about rain. I keep frogg toggs with me just in case it rains, even though my riding gear is waterproof, it's still heavy so the toggs will let me walk around camp and stay dry.

You should have seen my first attempt, it was very small, I bought a child's tent thinking I'd got a great deal $10... no mattress/pad and it was about 4 1/2 feet long.. not a good night sleeping.. it was just a 1 day camp out in oklahoma for a BBQ. I had decided I wasn't camping anymore after that... but I gave it a 2nd chance w/better gear and here I am.

The tarp is wraped around the table and chair but it is stiff so it is not very neat :think1:
I might try it without wraping the table and chair as there is a good place to put the tarp under the tourpack (still have the Yamaha rack on it).

I will take it outside as soon as the fog lifts and try some othher options:)

Ah, that is an accident looking for somewhere to happen. Even without the tarp, that is a big load on that backseat. What's in the saddlebags and top box that you can't stuff some of that stuff in??? Like Joe says, there are picnic tabels at tent sites. If there aren't, I find another campground. Are ya bringin' the magneto???

I may leave the table and chair at home but for a first attept I thought I would go for the whole thing and see what happened :D

I may be better off without the tourpack and just use the rack on the back with the sissy bar to anchor stuff too.

I may take the tent out of its bag and stuff it and its footprints into a smaller bag that is not water proof :p

I will work on it some more today

I think I can get rid of the way the tent is bagged, it has it own bag and then I have that inside one of the water proof bags so takes up way to much room. I do have a bag about 1/3 the size of the blue one that I think will hold the tent but I will have to put the poles in the other blue bag with the sleeping bag. I might even be able to do the same with the sleeping bag and just stuff it in the bottom of the dry bag instead of using the bag it came in. :)

My first attempt at extended motocamping was on an 03 Volusia cruiser. with passenger back rest, luggage rack [guess where Im going with all this storage area] and saddle bags.
I met a guy in Langtry and he asked if I was moving. Later the same day I found out it made a good sail as well, I thought for a while the bike had powersteering. Now it is pack light and a little roughing it. Or use the trailer and carry items for more comfort. I dont do many overnighters Most trips or extended time 5 to 20 days. Older gentlemen need more comfort than youngsters so now the trailer gets a lot of use.

Trailers are good and bad. Lots more room for equipment, but I promise you the more room you have the more you will carry and use half of it.Yoy will drop a little on fuel. Most trailers handle well. They do catch cross winds some. And if you use to much rear break they will be beside you. This happend one time only, dodging two mule deer in New Mexico. I bought the trailer two years ago for a trip with my daughter to Yellowstone. We were out 20 days and needed the room for double the equipment, we cooked most of our meals to save a little cash to buy more gas plus in Tetons and Yellowstone normal foks can not afford to eat out very often. Prior to that I camped with what I had on the bike. I would not purchase a trailer until I was sure the little lady was ok with motocamping.

Bring your camera and take plenty of pics for the wife. I'll be there two-up (maybe three-up ;) ) with my Uni-go trailer. Momma wants her creature comforts. (I won't lie, I like them too but I can always blame the SO! )

I am saving space in my trunk for both cameras just incase the tank bag I ordered does not make it in time :)

I have it down now to 1 of the big bags (28 x 12.5) and 1 small one (25 x 7), plus the table and chair still fit and even help make a bigger platform for what I put across the seat. :p

I do have some HD hard bags to put on so I get more bag space but I dont have them ready to put on yet.

Well, I called Heather at Russell day-long today. I asked if my seat had been shipped or was still in the works. She said it was ready to ship Friday last but Quality control found a defect in the material and sent it back to be completely recovered. Probably won't ship till tomorrow or Wednesday.

I was still holding out a hope for the best but looks like the door is officially shut on my trip to TX...bummer.

Hope you guys have a great time looks like the weather is gonna be great.:tent8:

Their site says 8 people to a campsite, but nothing about number of tents or vehicles.

I just called and the limit is 8 people but he said 4 MC per site is okay but they might consider it an extra vehicle since I guess 2 MC = 1 Car (Boy, they haven't seen my bike)... anyway, might be an extra $6 split 4 ways... That's if we have that many to a site. I don't know how big they are so we'll see Friday when I get there.

I'm planning on heading out at 2pm but work might hogtie me 'til after 4 and if that happens I have to fight through Dallas traffic which is no fun so if I'm kept later, I'll just wait and head out at 6pm . But, I"m shooting for 2... should be there by 3... lol long trip.

I told the ranger... might be 5 of us... might be 20.. you just don't know...

Just "ATTEND"ed.

Scheduled off work at 1pm. Leave between 2 and 3pm. About a 2 hour trip so should be there between 4 and 5pm. I don't think it'll take me that long but that is what mapsource says.

Course if this Friday is anything like last Friday, all bet's are off as to when I'll get there. But I will be there Friday Evening.

There will be more. It's so local to DFW that some will just show up. Not everyone wants to join a site because of one event...

We knew when we started this site it would be a slow-growing site... there are typically only a small group of serious campers in most MC sites...

The site is a lot more active than it's been all year.... oh, wait... this is jan... okay... :fire3:

as some of you know, my father passed away early Saturday morning. The past 6 months has

I took some pics at the campground Friday afternoon so here they are and I'm happy to see
many were able to meet up and discuss motocamping in more detail.

Hey Joe,

I'm disappointed that I missed you Saturday, though I did get to meet the famous (or crazy?) Motomac! His biscuits from the Dutch oven were awesome! Thanks for all that you contribute MotoCampers and the ST site as well. I was the lucky one that came away with the Sevylor air mattress, so thanks for the prizes too! Of course, I was a little more excited with my prize than those who got the MRE's. Hope to see you around a campfire soon... :fire1:

Well after a rather interesting trip home, I finally made it. Thanks to a couple of ST folks and Sloan's Honda in Murphreesboro and Honda of Florence, I'm have a new rear tire and even though I have no instrumentation, I did have ignition and got home from Florence KY using GPS and stopping for gas once, because I have no gas gage and didn't want to run out.
