Rotten Tomatoes reviews (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/grizzly_man/)
Have any of you seen this documentary? I just rented it at Blockbusters this weekend because I was on call so I had to stay home and all the good movies were taken so I grabbed this one.
I was expecting a documentary on Bears.
My condolensces to the family and friends of this guy... but, I think he was an idiot....
'Live with the Bears" ? Sorry, People should not live with wild animals that can kill you with one swipe of their claws.. I don't know much about the wilderness and I'm sure I'd have a hard time surviving if I were caught somewhere and have to rely on my own resources. BUT... to talk to these animals and treat them as you were one of them, THEY know better and WE should know better...
Anyone have any comments?

Yeah, that guy and others like him, are idiots. Like this guy I seen a few weeks ago on Discovery who wanted to go out in the bush and get as close to a wild lion as he could. He was within 7 yards of a pride of cubs, couple females and a BIG old male. Totally stupid. People don't realize that they may look cuddly and cute at times on TV, but when they go off it is nothing less than 800 - 1500 pounds of pure rage. There is nothing a human could do to get away or stop it, it would be like a house cat playing with a mouse.
I used to have a Rottwieler (sp?) and he was a big boy, a brute - weighed #112 at the Vets office at about 1.5yrs old. He was gentle as a pussycat with me. We'd often wrestle and play around (nothing rough) and many times I knew in the back of my mind that if he decided to, he could have done me in easily. He was a brute and very fast at wrestling around, there is no way you could get a dog like that off you if they had a mean-on. That was just #112, I can't imagine #800 - 1500.

Just think of a house cat - maybe 20lbs... coming at you, once it latches on with the claws it would take a little effort to get a hold of it in a place where you could deter it from causing damage... that's just 20lbs of cat... imagine a cat, or bear, that can bite your leg and rip it off at the joint with little effort.
I think he mentioned in the movie that one of the bears is 10 ft tall... I don't think I could win in a contest with ANYTHING 10 ft tall...

Yeah, I'd have to vote idiot. Sure, he may have had a great deal more knowledge about them...but it's a shame because events like this just make people think all bears should be killed. Same with Sharks, Lions or any other predator.
Wrestling with your dog (as I have done) certainly has made me wonder if somehow a prey drive would kick in and leave me hurting...but fortunately when you bond and more importantly keep them well fed, and it's an animal that's been domesticated for centuries...it all helps in stamping out the wildness. But any wild predator that is hungry will just look at your as you are...a meat stick.
Yellowstone Park is one of those places where you can see where our gene pool should thin out. Scores of people that have food on them, in there tent and car, leave trash out, don't clean their kitchen ware and also walk out to get as close as they can to any of the large wildlife that exists in the park. Note: A moose is not cute. What's truely sad is that park rangers do everything they can to help people not be idiots. Which is a pain sometimes when you are in a group and trying to get information from a ranger because they have to dumb it down and cover what should be common knowledge.
I guess I shouldn't be too surprised when our government is reversing all strides we've made toward protecting wildlife areas (don't get me started here!) and organizations like the Boy and Girl Scouts have simply gone down the tubes (at least down here in Houston). My daughter has been in the brownies for 2 years and has yet to go on an over night camping trip. Males aren't allowed to go unless accompanied by two other female adults. And no adult can ever be alone with a child. So consequently nobody can go camping. I haven't interacted with our boy scouts in a long while, but when I left the organization about 15 years ago, they had just sold one of the largest boy scout camps in the country (in the Texas Hill country) to a housing development project. The only scout camp I'm aware of that is worth anything is now Philmont in northern New Mexico.
Not that I need an organization to teach my daughter about the wilderness, but it would have been nice for her to have some friends to share it with. Alas we'll be doing most of this stuff on our own, like we have been for the last 4 years. Once she's old enough to ride long distance on the bike, we'll probably start doing it via Motorcycle.

That's too bad about the scouts... I don't have any kids so I can't say was aware of that situation.
It's ironic the guy kept saying how he was 'protecting' the bears when, by being around them, he was causing more harm than good.
Maybe, seeing the DVD, it will convince more to NOT going near ANY bears and let them live their life.
When in Yellowstone we came across a few spots where people saw an elk and pulled off to take a pic. In one section, there was a Bull Elk with a couple females nearby. I'm no rocket scientist but I knew well enough to not get off the bike and keep moving.
It's hard to sum up one man's life in a documentary like this and maybe he did other things that did help the bears, I know I'd never heard of him before.
I guess as far as documentaries go, it was a good one, as I won't ever forget what 'NOT' to do with or around bears.

One of the networks did a story on this guy I think. If it?s the same guy he had his wife with him and she was killed as well. I don?t know what is on the DVD because I have not seen it yet but on the show I saw there is a tape recording of the attack. His mother has it but has never listen to it because they told her it was horrific. The guy had issue and got what I think he wanted. Fame (But in the wrong way)

Sounds like the same guy, he wasn't married, it was his girlfriend and I think they had just been together a few months.
