View Full Version : Do you have a favorite knife for camping?

In addition to a pliers-based multitool, my current favorite is a little fixed blade knife called the Mini Canadian. It's made by Bark River, a small outfit in Michgan's UP that makes them by hand. The Mini Canadian is small enough to carry around in your pocket (6" with a 2 1/4" blade), but is robust enough for anything I would use a knife for when camping.

I have a buck Ranger that I like a lot and a serrated blade thats real easy to open that has a lock blade also .
though the blades are too long to carry all the time so I have a little lock back from that sports store in Mn ... cabellas and it has hung arounf for about 6 years. Its the one I abuse the most and it just hangs in there.

I found if you just get pretty decent steel and the knife will last a long time .
When in the Army I went with a few high dollar knifes but the lower end ones like Buck and a case hammerdead lasted just as long .
Fixed blades seem to get frowned on the the LEO's so lock backs work for me

On top of my Leatherman, I usually carry a Grohmann folder.

I'm not a big fan of serrated blades, but I've grown to like this knife. (I'm a knife junky)..

I've got a couple Grohmann Trout and Bird knives that I typically use for small game hunting, but for a bike knife, this folder seems pretty nice.

I know this sounds tacky, but I have one of the old Survival Knives I carry in our Trailer.
I have had this knife since I was a kid. The pic is not mine but just like it. Mine is the lighter camo with the stainless blade. I have used it several times while camping and it works great.

I like my Spyderco, it lightweight, opens with one hand and it thin so you can keep in you pocket. http://www.backpackgeartest.org/reviews/Knives/Folding/Spyderco%20Delica%20CombinationEdge/James%20E.%20Triplett/Initial%20Report/Initial%20Delica%20Header%20bw%20small.jpg

I used to have a Grohmann #1, but I gave it to my sister-in-law's husband when I got the Bark River.

As far as LEOs and fixed blades, the little Mini Canadian is smaller than a lot of folders and is pretty "friendly" looking (not "weapony"). I've steered away from folder for camping because I always seem to gunk them up with food.

We must be two peas in a pod because your mention of Bark River caught my eye right off the bat. I used to be a Marble's knife dealer, until everything got sold out to the guy in Bark River and the Marbles knives were made overseas.

I've passed by the shop in Bark River, MI and always meant to stop, but didn't. Next week I'm "between jobs" and I'm off to Duluth on Monday to buy a new Aerostich Darien jacket (I like fresh jackets, rather than the stale ones that are through the mail:hatw1: ). From there, I plan on riding around the U.P. and was kicking around heading over to Escanaba and Bark River, before headind down to the BMWMOA National Rally in West Bend, Wi..

I'll give the mini Canadian a good look while at the Bark River factory store..

I'm envious. I'd love to visit the Bark River shop, as I'd like a larger companion knife for the Mini CDN. I was in MI visiting my dad a week or so ago, but he's nowhere near Escanaba.

I just carry my Puma hobbytec lockback pretty much everywhere I go. Everything else is on my Victorinox multi-tool.

My kid gave me one of those for father's Day when he was about ten years old. It's still my favorite camping knife. Mine has the metal sheath with the arkansas stick on the end.
Interesting, while digging through the camping stuff to pack my Bunkhouse, I never saw the knife. Glad you posted that, I'll have to do some digging.

Mike,

Glad I got you thinking.
I have had mine for well over 20 years and sometimes I wonder how I have held on to it that long...LOL, but glad I have.:)
