I was overdue for a camping trip so why not the
Texas Hill Country

Friday 6/8
Dallas to Kerrville State Park
313 Miles
I left Dallas and headed towards the Hill Country (Kerrville, TX) Friday after
I got everything done at work.
It was a great day, 75 degrees and partly cloudy. I bypassed a 14 mile traffic
jam due to some construction between Dallas/Fort Worth, gotta love a CB on
a bike and being able to hear the truckers talking about alternate routes.
After riding through downtown Fort Worth and getting out of town the normal
traffic eased off and it was a comfortable ride. I typically take I-20 to Hwy 16
all the way down to Kerrville. There's little traffic. I used to take 281 but that
has been inundated with RVs over the past few years and also patrolled more,
the "road less traveled" kinda thing I guess.
I made it the Kerrville State Park the same time as Mike (IBRubicon) on his
ST1300. We got a site and set up the tents.

We contacted Terry who got a hotel room in town and met with him on
his Wing at the Cracker Barrel. A little BS-ing and we headed back to the
campground. Terry needed to get back to College Station as he had a
friend that just got some bad news so he wanted to see if he could help
out.
Mike and I got back to the campsite and I tried to get a fire going, it
started but it was just smoldering and there wasn't much kindling
sitting on the ground. I would have used my axe to make some out
of the firewood if I had remembered I had it LOL. It had been a
while since I camped so I was a little rusty.
Saturday 6/9
Hwy 16, Hwy 335, 336, 337
230 miles
Mike and I went to the Cracker Barrel again for Breakfast, yeah I know, but
it's not bad and it's relatively fast.
While there Mark (Brinkster) met up with us from Buda, TX on his Valkyrie.
We ate breakfast and then headed out about 10 if I remember correctly.
Our route was 16 to 337 through Leakey and Camp Wood. Then, 335 north
to 41 and south on 336 back to Leakey then back to the park via 337 and
16.

Pretty typical, we were going to try the bike museum but since we
ate lunch in Leakey at the Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop (http://www.friocanyonmotorcyclestop.biz/). We tried the Axis
Deer Sausage sandwich, it was okay but maybe the cheeseburger would
have been a better choice, just not to my liking.

I tried to take a pic of the wild flowers and butterfly and a darn
Motorcycle got in the way.

Once back at camp, we rested and got some more water in us. Then,
Mike decided we should try a fire again. My bags were full and I didn't
have a way to get the stack of wood back to the site but Mike came
through and we moved all his stuff over to my bike and loaded him up.
I wasn't too comfortable with it but it rode well and we made it back
to the site with no issues.

Well, that was until I helped to get the dirt
out of his saddlebags and it blew back into my eyes. Took a lot of
flushing with water but I finally got everything out. In the meantime
Mike brought back a corn dog and burrito from the corner store, we
could identify at least 3 of the 5 meats used but maybe it was best
we left it at that.
The fire was good. The best part was it warmed us up and so when
we finally walked away from it to call it a night, it felt cooler. I think
it was 80 LOL.
I got some sleep, I think, Mike snores up a storm and even from 20
feet away in another tent I thought he was chainsawing some trees.
He's got to be in the top 3 of the loudest snorers I've camped with,
maybe there should be a trophy?
From now on, there will be earplugs in my tent.
Sunday 6/10
Kerrville State Park to Dallas
313 Miles
We woke up and tore down camp and then went on our way. It's
always a sad morning as the trip just never seems to last long
enough.
