Found me yet another cool flashlight the other day while visiting Sports Chalet. It runs on 2 AA battery's, has 3 LED's and an attachable Refractor Rod which make it a GREAT lantern and still works as a flashlight at the same time.
Battery life say's 43 hours, good enough for me. Amazing how well it lights up the room with the refractor rod in place. Last picture, dark garge, taken without a flash, you can see how well it lights up my garage.

Cost was $20 included 2 sets of batteries.
Im sure will see many more lanterns in thr near future using these refactor rods.

I was wondering about those, saw them at Bass Pro Shops a few weeks ago. Is the refractor rod glass or plastic? I really doubt it would be glass...
Good idea in making the use of LEDs even more efficient.

The refractor rod is a real nice solid piece of clear plastic/acrylic with white lines running from end to end. Lines looks to be done with a lazer as the are perfect. They light up real brite and allow light to focus more as it exits the end of the rod. So it doubles as a flash light and a lantern.

I saw one of those today at REI. I thought I'd check here for reviews before I buy.
I found a "light kit" online. It has a light shade , base and glode. The kit looks a little bulky which would defeat why I like it.

Blues Traveler,
Is the light from the Refractor Rod harsh? Would the shade kit be needed?

Is that thing better than that p.o.s. yellow coleman led lamp from walmart? It won't even light up a whole picnic table. I have an led maglite that's bright enough to land an airplane, but it's a spotbeam. I was looking for a good led lantern that's small. Thanks for the info!

Its not that it too bright to me it puts out just the right amount of light. What it is is a big aluminated object and can be distracting. On my trip a couple months ago I put a piece of tape down one side and on the end. This helped.
This camp kit could actually defuse and yet carry more light if that makes any since. Have been meaning to come up with something like this on my own. Now I don't have too.
I've got to have this camping kit. This could be the hot settup. THANKS!

After looking at the link above I've notice there are several different versions of that light. One LED, three LEDs, "N" type batteries, Nichia LEDs (?) etc. The lights that use "N" batteries claim 240 hours while the AAs claim 50 hours.

John,
Mine has 3 LED's and uses 2 AA batteries. Have used it several trips and every night on my 8 day solo trip. I have not had to replace the batteries yet.
I have one flashlight that uses an "N" battery. I stopped using it after seeing how much they cost compared to readily available AA's.
As I was typing this out I placed a call to the people at Coast for a free product cataloge and asked about the this light in paticular. I found out the acessories are not sold seperate. So I will have to but the light with refractor rod again to get all the goodies. This doesn't bother me one bit as I really like the light. She also stated that it uses "AA"s. So John, what ever one you saw that uses "N" batteries is not the one with the refractor rod.

I just placed a call for a catalog too. I hope it shines some light on this subject..lol...:ph1:
Using the K.I.S.S. theory is the way to go (AA) but the 240 hour N battery caught my eye.
FWIW here's the link to the N camping kit.

Update.....
I like this little light. I put it (with the refractor rod on) in the attic of my REI Half Dome and it put out good light. I had no problem seeing inside my tent even with the light having to first shine through the attic mesh. It did double duty as a flash light (without the refractor rod) when I was looking for firewood.
**I did use a head light to read with.

And it still works like a flashlight with the refractor rod too.
So............did you by just the light with rod? Or........... did you get the camping kit with accessories?

I was looking in the flashlight section of walmart today and since I was killing time, I
walked to the fishing section. There was a coast Angler's pack there. Comes with the
LED light w/refractor rod AND a smaller one w/smaller refractor rod that has a red flashing,
rapid flashing and steady on setting. Pretty cool for night time stuff.
It even comes with a little carrying case to hold all 4 pieces.
It was $19.

I wonder why they don't have it in the flashlight section too? Great price. That little flashing red light is a nice bonus.

It was called and 'Angler's Pack' so it was fishing oriented. Not sure why they did that as it's just as camping oriented or anything else for that matter..

My walmart was moving some camping stuff into clearance isles, this is now $7. They have about 10 of them. The walmart is at Marsh Ln and Frankfort. I believe that is considered Dallas but it might still be in Carrollton.

Great price.
I'll take one if you have any left. Is paypal OK?
They didn't have any at my local walmart. They did have the Renegade (cheap look-a-like knock off). What's the walmart stock # for the Coast LED? Maybe it can be searched on line.
PS Last time I was at Fry's they had a big selection of Coast flashlights.

Almost forgot....might be a good find???
When I was looking for the $7 Coast light at Walmart I came across a Renegade air pump. It's about the size of an old packet transistor radio and runs on one D cell. Looked like it was for air matterss'?
