About 20 miles south of Bend, OR is the Newberry National Volcanic Area, with two lakes set in the caldera of a dormant volcano.:) There are several local campgrounds, about three on each lake (Paulina and East Lakes). There are also a couple of Lodges in the area for those that want to sleep inside. Great scenery, nice local things to look at. A hot springs at East Lake,:p an obsidian flow between the two, a road to the top of Paulina Peak for a great view, and some really nice falls on the river draining the lake. It is a kind of Crater Lake, but the road is next to the water, and you are in the crater, not driving around the rim.
Camgrounds are clean, but you are fairly high in the sky, so an afternoon thunderstorm is always possible. Groceries and food is available, and the ride up the hill is worth the trip.:tent8:
