Does anybody buy freeze-dried food in bulk? I thought it only came in 1 or 2 serving sizes. Is it cheaper? Can you break it down to individual bags ( freezer bags? )? Can you pour boiling hot water in freezer bags? You get the idea, I have a lot of questions about bulk freeze-dried food. I like the small bags and I'm always looking to save a buck if I can. Tell me what ya know. Thanks in advance.

Well... 10 servings at $25, not including tax and/or shipping.. is $2.50/serving.
If you keep checking wal-mart and other places - you'll sometimes see the 2-serving packs on clearance for $2.50... I tried the Beef Stroganoff recently on a trip to Arizona and it was pretty good. I found 4 of those on clearance at wal-mart for $2.50 so if you can do that you'll save and we all know a 2-serving pack is really 1-serving for most of us..
If you could get the 10 serving deal a lot cheaper I think a freezer bag would work fine. The water doesn't have to be boiling as the food is already cooked, it just has to be hot and stir often and let sit... A good meal if you are not close to a city/town or just too tired and want to sit around camp.
I try to keep my eye on good deals and my local wal-mart has lot of camping stuff on clearance...

+1 on the hot water in freezer bags. I seldom buy camping supplies, but usually just get stuff like instant Au gratin (sp?) potatoes etc. Take the food out of the box, package etc and put it in a heavy duty freezer bag, the kind with folds in the bottom so you can set it down and it stands by itself. Because my memory is fading fast I........what was I saying? Oh yes, I write on the bag anything I have to add, ie: butter, milk, etc. (all dehydrated of course) and how much water. Then at the camp I simply heat the water, put it in the bag, wait for a few minutes and eat out of the bag. Very little clean up. For dessert some pudding mix and dry milk in another bag, add water, squish around for a minute and squeeze it out a small hole like the astronauts do...yummy!

Dehydrated Butter??? Where do I find that? I've been stealing the little cups in the restaurant, but then need to keep it cold. Normally I use the cooler for clean clothes and a bottle of Rye or Schnapps until I reach my destination, then setup and run for food. I refuse to eat margarine, but hate wasting the butter I don't use. Dehydrated would be perfect!

Butter is one of those wonderful foods that you do not need to refrigerate unless you are keeping it TOO long. A few days in a sturdy container works great.

When you want butter flavor in camp the two best ways to get it are to use butter spray (Pam or the generic equivilant) or butter buds. There are two types (of Butter Buds) you can get. One is a sprinkle (which as it states you simply sprinkle on what you want to flavor) and the other is a packet of powder like dry onion soup mix which is also another exellent seasoning you can get just to put flavor into something that has liquid in it.
You mix the butter bud powder with water to make it work. Either can be found at most grocery stores and don't cost much at all.
