OK, I'm cheating. But I can't pass up a place that is a biker hotel instead of a campground -- particularly when it's in one of the neatest biking areas in Europe. There's the upper Rhine river valley with Germany's Black Forest on one side and France's Vosges mountains on the left.

And the Moto Hotel du Col de Bussang ("col" = mountain pass, ergo, Bussang Pass) puts you in the mountains right above France's picturesque white wine region. It's France imitating Germany, with sauerkraut that's like nothing your mother-in-law gets from the can.

This biker hotel is run (like so many outside Holland) by a Dutch couple who, like their website (http://www.coldebussang.com/en/accueil.htm), handle English, French and German. And if you're so enclined, they also have adjacent villas for weekly rental. The garage is an abandoned tunnel on the property.

The folks at UK's MotoBOTC say:

There is a huge beer-garden where you can enjoy the sun, and have a good chat with other bikers. In the evening you can play jeu de boules (bowls) on the ?court de petanque', or just enjoy the good atmosphere in the bar.

This is the part of France that has little in common with the haughty down-the-nose disdain most Americans expect when they think of 'la Republique francais'. Alsatians could change your viewpoint -- well, at least about the Alsace.
