I've had a Mini-Mag flashlight sitting around the garage for a while now. I got it for camping but the little bulb has burned out and the batteries just don't seem to last as long as my comparable LED flashlights.
I was at wal-mart and saw this upgrade kit from Nite Ize (http://www.niteize.com/productdetail.php?category_id=28&product_id=110) so I got one and just put it in. This transforms my Mini-Mag to an LED flashlight that seems to project more 'natural' light. The other LED lights I have are almost flourescent in color.
I'm very satisfied with this.
Note:
You will loose the 'focusing' ability with this kit, the beam will be a 'flood' type beam
and will not focus form a wide/flood to thing/pencil beam as it does with the stock bulb.
I got mine at Wal-Mart for $5.

Just happen to be in Wally World getting a spare new bike key made (keep one in my wallet) and remembered the LED upgrade. I picked on up but to be honest I'm not sure I like it.
Yes, it's plenty bright but you sacrifice the beam adjustment capability of the MAG-LITE with the LED kit. Having the little pencil beam is nice at times... :D :D :D

Sorry, I forgot to mention that, I played with it and, to me, the LEDs are better than the focused incandescent beam. Could be my light, it just never was any good to me until I used this upgrade.

So do the batteries now last longer? Is this now your primary flashlight for inside the tent? If I recall, you entioned hanging a different type of light once and I wonder if this is a better light. I have several that I will convert if so.

I use 3 basic lights... all LEDs, the batteries seem to last forever on all of them.
Light #1 - Headband light for hands free movement.
Light #2 - Mini-mag light, now w/LED.
Light #3 - Energizer Folding light, great for hanging in tent loft or from loops with good coverage of inside of tent, also good for reading.

Just went out at lunch to Wal-Mart and got three conversion kits. I already had two.
Biggest problem I had with standard Maglights is that the batteries wouldn't be good after storage. I need a light to work when I need it.

Same here, I pretty much stopped using my mag light because it was always dead between trips. All my LED stuff is so dependable I can't remember the last time I put in new batteries and when I take one and put new batteries in it, it doesn't appear any brighter.

Joe I got the upgrade kit today and I lile it. Thanks for the TIP!:D
In my work mini-mags have been a standard tool for years. (We work in the dark a lot.) This has started to change in the last year or two with the greater selection of leds available. I have converted a couple of my mag lights and have been happy with the conversion.
FYI the mag lite web site says that they will have led lights in "early 2006." My guess is that the leds are hurting their sales.

Has anyone had issues with the mini mag not being dependable after the led conversion? I bought this shortly after this thread started. Mine has let me down 2 times now, I keep it stuck between the bottom and backrest in the passenger seat of the company jeep when not on the bike. It has always worked when needed at work and camping. The last moto trip I checked it before putting it in the bike glove box and it worked fine. 500 miles later and setting up in the dark It would not work, had to pull the unupgraded spare out. When I got home I took it apart saw nothing wrong put it back together and it worked, replaced it back in the jeep. Two nights later had a 3AM call out data edfa out in a remote hub and the light was out again, had to use the headlights, as best possible. I love the extra light this upgrade puts out so I don't want to go back. It is possible that the ST glove box heat issue has struck again ( it melted an access card last summer), but with the power off on the light I did not think this would be an issue. I am planning on picking up another upgrade kit next stop at wally world, just to see. Any thoughts?

Mine has still been working flawlessly. Could be you just got a bad one but with LEDs they usually work or not work, I would try bending the little pins so they maybe make better contact...???

Yes.... I too have had problems with my LED kitted mini-mag. I originally changed it over to LED to make the batteries last longer, but that's a moot point now that the darn thing doesn't work after hanging out in my fanny pack.
Love the long lasting light..... hate not having the beam adjustment.
To be fair... I am kinda rough on my flashlights and standard mags fail on me all the time too.

I reinstalled the regular bulb on break at work a few minutes ago and it doesn't work either, bulb has thru connectivity so it is good, batteries have 1.6 V. Guess it is time for a new light before next weeks extended trip! I might just try something new.

If that's the case, I've never had a problem with the Princeton Tec lights, I have them all over the house in case of a power outage and I've never replaced a battery in any of them. It's only been 2 or may 3 years though. I thought I'd already done a review on these but I guess not...

Good looking light and the price is right also. Thanks for the link.
I have bought my last mini mag, theres 3 or 4 lying around here that wont work.
the twisting switch mechanism is a POS these days. when they first came out they were great I carried one for years till it got stolen. every one since has been nothing but trouble.
the 2C or 2D lights with the pushbutton switch on the side are still as reliable as ever.
the first camp I make with you fellows Ill bring all the dead minimags. maybe someone else can get the blasted things to work,if so theyll be yours.
and just so its not totally off topic, I did convert one of them with the nite-eyez kit. it worked great till the switch failed.

I convertyed three of them in my house .
I couldnt be happier as they last for a long long time as I use mine as a reading light with rechargable batteries. Once in awhile I leave the light on over night and its still pretty good for a few hours after that
