Northwoods Campout/Lake Superior Circle Tour

This was a trip to meet new friends and get to see old friends. I only wish I'd had more time, as you never have enough days to spend quality time with the fine folks on here.

Bike is packed and ready to leave early Wednesday morning.

We travel to Indianapolis and meet up with IndyDon and keep heading north after grabbing a bite of lunch.

I had talked to Dan and Alisa at this gas stop, and we were going to try to meet up and travel together as they had already met up with Gary. We were supposed to meet at the Cedar Springs exit but I blew right past it not seeing it along the way. I now know why I didn't see the exit, I was fumbling for the camera to take another picture of the road we were traveling on. While trying to watch the road and take a picture I got this. :lol2 Sorry guys, actually Don was the only one who saw the exit.

I logged on to check my e-mail and Hughes has a news feed like Yahoo and others. I saw where a wing walker died from a fall during an air show in Michigan. The picture of the plane looked just like the one we photographed. :(

We stop at the Visitor Center and get directions to a campground right on Lake Huron. I forget the names of the campgrounds as I forgot to bring a notebook, but I still have the receipts if anyone sees something they like. I have to say everywhere we stayed was very nice, and very affordable. P^

I guess if you have to go, it's better to go doing something you love instead of setting in a rest home somewhere. My thoughts anyway.

We get packed up, and head farther north to Canada. Before we get to the Toll Bridge our friend Scott splits off, he backtracks and heads around the south part of Lake Superior to later meet up with us in Minnesota a few days later. Bud and I pay our toll and cross the bridge, cars are already backed up coming in the other direction.

Then we cross the border into Canada without much waiting, Sunday seems to be the day to cross as everyone seemed to be coming into the US this morning. Bud does get picked out to come in and do a background check. :lol

We set up camp at a nice wooded campground/RV park that had nice hot showers and good level sites. Good price as well.

I got sleepy a lot while riding in Canada, I think it was something that they put in the gravy they put on their french fries. Yes I said gravy, and it was great. One other thing about fries from Canada, when you order fries you get a HUGE amount of fries! P^

And stay at the KOA as it was awarded the best KOA Kampground of 2010. It wasn't as scenic as a lot of the campgrounds here in the states. But as usual with KOA's everything was nice and they offered a lot of services.

The next morning we get up to cloudy weather and head for the Harley Dealer about six miles away and get caught in morning traffic and a heavy rain. I was hoping we could get over to the dealer before it rained, no such luck. I managed to get my jacket on as we were in heavy traffic without much of a place to pull over.

Harley dealers are different in Canada, this one had an eatery and a bowling alley! They also had gravy on their fries as well. Evidently Harley hasn't made the Canadians turn their dealerships into fashion boutiques, and line the walls with chrome parts made in China like they are here!

We end the day late in the evening at a KOA. Putting our tents up just before dark, this campground offered pizzas delivered to the campsite table! P^ For some reason I forgot to take pictures of the campsite when the pizzas got there. :lol

That was the neatest thing I saw in that little town! I think it was empty :p A lot of times I would see something but couldn't get the camera out of my pocket fast enough. I normally have my small camera around my neck on a lanyard so I can take pics while riding, but that was just one more thing I forgot on this trip. The photos of the waterfall was taken with my better camera that I keep in the saddlebag.

I really can't say what type of gravy it was, it was close to a brown beef gravy, but seemed to be the same at everyplace. Maybe some of our Canadian friends on here can enlighten us.

Did you try the poutine? That has cheese and gravy on the fries also.. never had it myself.. I stay away from stuff like that.. nice pix BTW! AND YES they DO make Harley dealerships do the flash and dash stuff here...a longtime dealer in Wheatley was told he could not sell any new bikes as he would not go into one of those NICE stores (to make them look good in my opinion...) They are still in business despite the negative support from the parent company and they sell used bikes and service them..peeps respect them around here..one reason why I won't buy a Harley..when a 2 wheel vehicle costs more than a car that I would buy,I have always had a prob with that....

Appleton's Harley Davidson in Clarksville, TN who had been in business for years was told after a tornado hit their dealership that they would have to move to where Harley wanted them to, and build a building to their specs if they wanted to stay in business.

Bud's of Evansville, IN also had to make a move and open up a shiny big building to cater to more of the "Mystique" than the motorcycle in my opinion.

I didn't try the poutine, but we were curious as to what it was. We were too embarrassed to ask! :o

I've always told people....Harley doesn't sell motorcycles. They sell a lifestyle and throw a bike in as an accessory! Some of them look pretty nice, however.

Gary, pick up a Screaming Eagle catalog, they have quite a bit of tools to buy, but as per Harley they cost a fortune. You can get everything from jigs to bore out cases and press in bearings and down. Jims is also a good place to buy tools, but they are a bit pricey as well.

She actually thought we'd be gone longer! When I got home Friday evening she said I can't believe you didn't go on out to Sturgis for the last couple of days of the rally. I told her we were going back for the 75th anniversary for a couple of days and then ride the surrounding areas for a week or so. Yep, I got the Stinkeye from Godzilla! :lol

I had a great time on this trip, getting to visit with old friends, and meeting new friends. We got to see a lot of beautiful country and camp in some great places. My Mountain Hardware Light Wedge 3 tent and Sevylor air mattress was still a great home away from home! P^

The only new piece of gear I used on this trip was an MSR folding spatula. It worked great, which wasn't a surprise as most of MSR's stuff is highly rated.

I bought a Tour Pak style rear trunk to use on both the Harley and the Suzuki and I have to say it worked out great for what it is. I paid $159.99 shipped from e-Bay for the trunk and rack. It is water tight but the tiny wire that keeps the lid from flopping all the way forward snapped with the weight of the small Nelson Riggs bag on top that had my rain gear, water bottle, and sandals in it. I should have know better than to let it support that much weight, but I had a brain fart. :p

I'm going to try to take a few short trips this fall before I go back to work at my part-time job so maybe some of us can get together and camp for a day or two on a weekend, or during the week.

I agree Linda, we were impressed with the museum as well. I've got hundreds of pics from there, but I didn't want to get out of hand with all the bike pics! :lol

The museum in Maggie Valley is equally impressive, you should check it out the next time you are in the area if you haven't already. P^

Great pictures and trip. I would have enjoyed doing the ride with you. I bet all the windpower pictures were taken from Route 20. Sure looks familiar. I hate to say it but that is probably the future of our landscapes, windmill farms.

Just came back from the Quad Cities today and yes I seen much of what you did in Iowa.....except for the museum. I'm so close to it but have yet to make it down. Looks like I had better get my butt in gear and see it by the looks of your pictures Steve. Great report and thanks!!
