I postponed my original plan to go to BB over Xmas to spring when the desert is in bloom 2007. However, I'm not familiar with timing of the seasons there. Anyone have an idea when that generally is?

TIA

Depending on Mother Nature -- early March to mid April. I know that's a big window but these past few years have been very unpredictable.. :( :( :(

You won't regret it if you guess correctly and catch the desert in full bloom!!!! :) :)

Where is Texas anyway?:dizzy1:

I don't know if I can break loose for that one.

The little wife was rather concerned when we discussed the 2 week Colorado trip.

My other rides will probably need to be closer to home this year.

After 35 years of always being together it takes a little patience and understanding to get her used to the idea of me being gone weeks at a time.

She won't ride the ST1300 with me, so I'm solo.

We'll see what happens...

Here we go...Looks like the Emory Peak trail leads to the highest point, a good start...

http://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/images/high-chisos-trails_285px.jpg (http://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/upload/HighChisos-Trails.pdf)

The Emory Peak Trail is a two-mile roundtrip trail that leads to the summit of the tallest point of the Chisos Mountains. This trail begins near the top of the Pinnacles Trail and is scheduled for possible rerouting in the future. The last portion of the hike requires a rock scramble that may not be for everyone; use caution.

As much time I've spent camping in various areas of Texas, I have never seen a live javelina. When I was stationed in Ft. Worth we had a couple of deer camps and spent some time out looking around at night, but never came across one of those little critters.

Not sure yet.. I was going to call the week before and see what the status is. With the recent rains that just moved through we might be in luck but I've read that part of the park is windy so it might have more to do with that than the dry conditions...

I'll call when I get home today just to see what they say.

It really depends on how often the Ranger patrols and how much flame the logs put out. The impression I got from both the ladies I talked with was the fear of open flames and sparks. I guess in spite of the nasty weather in Central TX, it has been very dry down there. And I'm sorry I didn't address this in your other post diggers.

They must have changed something..

Last year in September during TexSTOC, we had a good fire at Davis Mtns SP.

But, not last Feb when we were there.

Event a bunch of charcoal would be better than nothing.

A campfire is a major ingredient for all campouts.. especially in these cooler temps.. however, just getting away from work and seeing good friends is enough for me. I got gloves..:fire3:

Also bought Beeper a new thermarest that folds much smaller than her old Wallyworld mat. Gonna go back next week and buy some of those camp towels and her some heavy duty fleece pants.

I just finished shoveling my driveway for the first time this winter. If I had to leave for Big Bend today, I would probably stay home!!! It is still snowing and the roads around here have been plowed and salted, but they are still not motorcycle worthy. Suppposed to go down to 9 degrees F tonight and when it is that cold, the salt doen't thaw the snow and ice.

Sorry to hear that Mac... your forecast for the next few days doesn't look like it's going above freezing anytime soon.. Better safe than sorry, would rather miss you on this trip so you make others than hear of a mishap...

I just did the 10 day for my area and it looks like I may be able to get out of here. As you say though the weather is subject to change. If it doesn't snow for a couple of days befroe the 1st, I can leave. If it snows the day before with any appreciable accumulation, I am stuck.

I feel for you Mac. Living in the snow belt means waiting for the snow to melt then rain to wash away the salt. Even when the main roads are clear, sometimes the side streets/roads are snow covered & slick. Mine is..... sigh...

Houston area riders or anyone else who might want to hook up with me here are my plans. As of right now I will depart on Wednesday from I10 and 99 at 11:00.AM Exit 743 on the North East corner in the movie theater parking lot. The destinations for the night will be Lost Maples State Park. (About250miles)

I will eat lunch before my depart time and will stop for dinner somewhere west of San Antonio. I would like to ride parts of 16 and 337 and arrive at the park before dark.

If anyone want to hook up with me anywhere along the way please let me know so we can plan a meeting place.

Thursday 2/3/07
The plan is to be on the road no later than 8:00am Thursday morning. I will take 337 out of Leakey to 55 south, than 334 to Brackettville. We will find someplace to eat along the way. Than a stop in Langtry to check out Roy Bean place and on the Big Bend.

If this does not work for you than let me know maybe we can adjust it some.

Don't know when I'll be in the Dallas area for sure, but it will probably be Thursday sometime as my GPS says to take I-20 all the way to 18 and then go south to 385. The weather gurus are showing a non-snow day Wednesday. I will be on the Wing again, haven't made up my mind if I will pull the Bunkhouse or not. I have less than 1000 miles on either/both bikes this year. Really wanted this to be the year of the ST, but it isn't as warm as the Wing. Maybe for DesertSToc.

Well these last two threads tell me I am going to bring the big rig. Regardless of how much grief I'll get from Trailace!!!!! I can bring a cooler, stove, Dutch oven, and kitchen with the Bunkhouse. How brisk is brisk? I'm used to low 20's-high teens at night and mid 20's during the day with wind chills near 0. It sure would be nice if they let us get a fire going. I'm planning on working until noon Thursday then heading south. It would be nice to have company on the ride if you want. I bet my wife could find some groceries for supper and we have a nice guest bedroom...... Give me a holler if you want to hook up... :D :D

I've been caught in a rain or light snow while on a trip but I've never started off in that type of weather.

Yep, I was looking last night. The ones I found didn't seem to have the same full rainfly. One thing I'm interested in is pole length when folded. I can pack my half-dome poles in a saddlebag. I definitely need a bigger tent when Beeper comes along, she takes up too much room!

I have the pinnacle pass 3 person/3 season tent with two doors and 2 vestibules. I love it, my wife and I chose it as it could hold our backpacking gear, two dogs and is relatively light and compact for either backpacking/motocamping. We got it on ebay for ~$110. I could not be happier with this tent, as a plus the roof is ~4'8" making it easier to change clothes inside. I am able to fit the tent in my Zega bags without problems.
I hope this helps
