Just loading my cage up for a trip, we have a older Coleman ice chest that plugs into the power port in the car, it has a feature to reverse polarity, one way it blows cool (about 20 less than ambient) the other way warm air. I have a old worn riding jacket with a loose mesh liner. If a guy took the ice chest to a saw and cut the unit from the ice chest with a flange around the base, then cut and hemmed a hole in the jacket, stitched the flange to the jacket, it would heat/cool the jacket. Don't know the amperage draw, suspect it to be pretty high, if my bike could support the electrical draw worth a try? Sure might help on the long rides!! Riding in 105 degree heat sure gives incentive to dream up such gadgets!

What is the collective thoughts of the esteemed group? Think it is worth cutting the ice chest and old jacket to try it???

not enough BTUs to make much difference. The small amount it needs to cool you ice chest is not enough to even start on your jacket

Thanx for the Kudos, but I have to agree with Rubicon on this one. I just try to keep moving and avoid towns with lots of lights. They say those armored shirts/sleeves/neck gaters that you sponge up with water work for quite a while, but I just can't imagine getting myself wetter than my sweat.

You had a novel idea there though; tip o' tha hat to ya!

One idea I've toyed with concerns my vest (cuts, denims, rag -everything but "colors")

I usually have a lot of heat/sweat on my back as I wear the vest to stop the shirt from flapping, protection (barely) and just a fun place to hang my patches of interest.
I'm thinking of some kind of scoop, maybe plastic, cardboard or something that will intake air in front, and let it out at the spine.
One thought would be to rig up some sort of a wire mesh that would hold the vest or jacket about 1/2" away from the skin, and continue up to the collar, which would act as a scoop. I've noticed that whenever I lift up the collar, I get a bit of air down the back.

I have a neck band and a vest like that. In most cases the neck band is enough, but on hot days the vest is great.

I've been thinking about some of that new phase change cooling stuff like this. http://www.mscooling.com/phase-changing

Maybe a couple of big pads of this stuff under the mesh might help.

Hey Quadlifter, how about you fabracate a snorkle/hood scoop kinda thingy to mount to the top of your helmet, with a flex hose down to the vest ... That would draw in a bunch of air ... P^ .. :p

With a little propeller on top...I think you're joking, but that's actually viable!
Funny thought - I haven't seen them develop a helmet with any real airflow yet.

A couple of years ago, I remember seeing a helmet that had a reverse parascope so you could see behnid you, it was all done with mirrors. But an air scoop just might work!!

Someone asked me before about keeping warm on the bike when I lived in NJ and rode in the winter...I jokingly replied "To keep my head warm, I just hook a hose to the exhust to my helmet and use the heat from that!" Their response was "Wow..what a great idea!"

Yet, probably low on BTUs and high on AMPS! If the northern guys can have heated suits, us southerners deserve cooled suits! 90% humidity evaporative cooling just makes you wet...and hot.
Thanks to all that responded!!

A hot and sweaty

I am looking for an XXL or XXXL Joe Rocket Sahara Vest if anyone has one they don't use. They no longer sell them, but I want it because it will zip into my mesh jacket. I would either purchase or swap for a very nice XL one that fits me but is too small for my coat.

Back in the "day", I only had a Triumph 750 for transportation. Kept riding to work daily right into the winter, and there was a guy on a BSA I'd see every day on the main drag, Military Hwy (Norfolk Va). I wore thermals, 2 pair of jeans, shirts and my leathers. Eventually I couldn't take the pain or hop off and just get to working, so I bought a truck.

The BSA guy was still going a month later, icy roads and snow on the ground. One day we met at a stoplight and I rolled down the window and introduced myself. After all the "Oh, that was YOU?" stuff, I asked him how on earth he could still be riding.

He smiled and opened up his coat zipper and shirts and just smiled.

That cheatin' sonofa so and so was wearing a wetsuit! :p
