Heron Lake State Park is about 20 miles from Chama, NM.....Take 84 North of Santa Fe. The wife and I go here a lot with the RV and the kayaks, and have camped in our Sentry as well. There are several loops along the lake, with some having electric hookups, but the best ones are in an open area along the lake. Fantastic views.....No Wake lake so lots of sailboats on weekends. Half the sites along the lake with the view are not real level so check them out. Showers at two of the loops. NM 95, which takes you to Heron Lake from US 84, continues down the road a few miles to El Vado Lake State Park (nice place too, but we prefer Heron)....if you follow NM 95 the paved road becomes packed gravel (not unusual for roads out here) and winds up near Cuba, NM on US 550. Fee at Heron is ten dollars a night. A nice overnight if you are going to be North of Santa Fe and South of Pagosa Springs, CO. Tierra Amarilla, NM is on 84 just about at the turnoff for the park, and there is a nice hardware store that had food, drink, ice....etc.....also a few gas stations with stuff you might need. There is a bait shop that has food and ice near the park entrance, but when the season is slow may or may not be open when you are there.
