The Federal Government has numerous campgrounds nationwide, and until recently I didn't really know how to find them. They are run by the following agencies:
1. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
2. USDA Forest Service
3. National Park Service
4. Bureau of Reclamation
5. Bureau of Land Management

They can be located & reserved at this website (www.reserveusa.com), which contains a wealth of information about the sites.

I drove thru one in a car on the Arkansas River in AR this past weekend, located right across the river from Ozark, AR. It was very impressive, with super clean showers, trees, paved roads, green grass, & tent sites along the riverbank. I intend to return on a bike with camping gear attached. They even honor a Golden Age Passport which will give people like Motomac a 50% discount. :)

Me thinks BJ is just a tad older than I am, so he also qualifies for the Golden Age Passport!!!!!!!

I have stayed at state parks, national parks and forest service camp grounds and like the forest service camps the best. They are less crowded, more natural, and cheaper than the others. Just be sure they have drinking water available. Coleman publishes a book listing them all by state and national forest. Most are west of the Rockies, but since I live in Southern California, they are close at hand.

Regards, Jim Healy

BTW - the Golden Age Passport is the best deal in town. $10 lifetime fee, free entry to all national parks, and 50% off on all federal campground fees.

That's one of the disadvantages of my being so youthful. I don't qualify yet.
