Ipsut Creek Campground lies in the Northwestern corner of Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington State, along Carbon River Road at an elevation of 2,300 feet. (The Carbon River Road is rough and trailers may have difficulty navigating it.) The site consists of 28 individual campsites open year-round, but dependent on snow conditions. Sites at Ipsut Creek are available on a first come, first served basis. The facilities at this site only include vault toilets so this is not a High Maintenance Camper location with showers.. Drinking water is not available at the campground. Any water obtained on site should be filtered, boiled or treated or otherwise packed in.
The Sites are nicely maintained, each site includes a picnic table and fire pit. There is more than enough room between sites which range from small (2 person/1 tent); to larger 12 person Group areas and a few that can accommodate small to mid size travel trailers. Several sites sit right next to the River, including one of the Group Sites.
Day hikes from the grounds/area include a ? mile hike across the Carbon River to Chenuis Falls, a ? mile hike to Ipsut Falls, a 2.5 mile medium/hard hike to Green Lake and a 3.5 mile medium/hard hike to the Suspension Bridge near Carbon Glacier. We have done them all.
We have camped there several times, from when it was full and also when it was only us and one other site occupied. Either way, you can?t beat the $8 per night fee for all that it has to offer.

It is nice for not having much in the line of facilities and Luxury items. Yes, the NW is a great place to be.

Sad news, as many you may have heard, Mt Rainier was hit very hard by the recent floods caused by heavy rains. Initial reports had the sunshine point campground as being destroyed and I thought and hoped no more were. Well not so as the Ipsut creek campground was also hit very hard and was lost to the floods. Stories can be seen all over the internet but here is some info from the National Park Service. http://www.nps.gov/mora/parknews/november-2006-flooding.htm
Check out the Photo Album Link at the top of the page.

To see what a great place this used to be, go to my website and check out the photo page.

Knowing that in the past when just one section of the Ipsut road washed out it took 2 years to fix and re-open, I am not betting that they will recover from this one. 6 sections and 2 miles of the 5 mile road were destroyed along with the campground and many of the hiking trails in the area. I hate to say it, but this might be the end of that little piece of tranquility. :(
You are right, this really SUX!
