Hi all, I just reqistered today, did a brief look around and didn't see much on hammocks. I currently have a Hennessey Hammock and it has been great for me! Light comfortable, packs small and with "snakeskins" you can put it up in less than 3 minutes. I also cary a larger tarp but seldom use it. I am a big fan of the hammock camping style for motocamping. Some of the excellent YouTube videos show it and some of its "tricks"

Anyway, soapbox put away...
I'll be pitching in, looks like a cool group!

Thanks
Jay

Hi jknight,

We have a few tree hangers here. I myself hang from time to time, not as much as I used to because of sleep apnea. I'm sure you'll here from more soon.

At the hills & rain Texas event/camping. Helped VABoB with his Hammick.
Has more ropes than my Parashute. Manage to get the rain fly on upside down. The trouble we had was the ground. Or the lack of. Could not get a stake in to those rocks.

Welcome aboard! There are several lurking hammock people on the site, and many are cross-posting with other boards (e.g., Land has some great ride reports).

BTW- Don't let the tent people scare you, they just are passing on grief that they get from the trailer folk. ;) Acedantinne has a lot of great tips and advice. For example, he passed on a tip from his experiences hiking the AT: each person, while getting advice from others, should figure out the gear that works best for them. +1 on that!

"The trouble we had" ?? No, "The trouble ME had". You got the tarp strung out for me, if I remember correctly.

Eventually, I'll get a short report out on it, but here is a short version: My brain was fried from the week I had. So bad I couldn't even tie a larks head. But like a golfer, I am going to blame it on the equipment and conditions, rather than me being an absolute bone head that day:

Low blood sugar was setting in, the sun was falling, and the wind was blowing (don't worry, I'll get to blaming the earth soon enough). I didn't have my snake skins yet (new huge Superfly tarp with doors!); my ridge line was twisted from a new gadget failure at the last campground (knotbones and heavy backpacks don't play well together); I was trying out a new tie out method, but one of the lines got stuck as dirt got on the line and I had too many loops in the prussik knot; I was sooo tired I couldn't even hit the stakes with a mallet that someone politely lent me that day. I couldn't even hit it with the side of my hatchet. Not that it would have mattered: Rocks? rocks? I am from the east where we have dirt. Ok, clay. Yes, I should've tried to the poor-water-on-the-ground trick, but I doubt it would have helped. Acedantinne, seeing what pitiful shape I was in, came over and fixed the problem (i.e., got me out of my own way).

Let's just say I was fully embarrassed. Words such as: "I could've put a tent up faster" and "Have you ever camped?" and "I your name really Bob??" were heard and were richly deserved. :o But thanks to Acedantinne, I slept soundly that night, to my neighbors delight. Unlike Mr. Guy, the hammock does help my sleep apnea, but perhaps not my snoring volume. :D

Afterwards, the subsequent riding and camping got a little better, and much colder. But that is a story for another day!

Thanks VABob, good story, sounds like a fun trip! I am serious about the offer to share my fancy eatin places, most have electricity!!

Big hammock camper, I love mine, with snake skins I have set up in a heavy rain been snug in my sleeping bag in 5 minutes, nary a wet item. I have a modified 2 tarp system, I use a large tarp with snake skins then the one attached to my Hennessey Hammock. All my gear hangs from a oversize ridge line on the top tarp. In tents I have always managed to fine the low spot, and/or there all the trees stored their spare roots. If I can't find a tree to hang from, I made a navigational error earlier in the day.
