Thought we might start a thread of what everyone rides for their camping tours.......my usual bikes for this type of trip are an '02 KLR650....and an'82 XL500R. I just bought a 2000 Concours as well in hopes of convincing my wife to come along....no pics of that yet! :)

After 6 years and 125,000 miles on my trusty ST1100 I've moved on to an 04' BMW R1150 GS Adventurer.

415416417

It carries a whole lot of gear. And with the Ohlin's shocks all dialed in with settings for loaded and unloaded its the perfect bike for me at this time.

Bought it last November and have already put well over 30,000 miles on her.:D

Here is my '99 BMW 1100 RT fully loaded. Regrding another thread, I use straps, bungees, 2 cargo nets and clips to hold all of this stuff solidly on the bike.

You told me that Trailer was BIG, but...lol
It's actually the same physical dimentions as an XL-Tent trailer, but empty. Also, since the cargo area is also over the wheels, that adds some cubic footage. It weighs in at 185 curb weight and when loaded up, 525-550. I also have a Yakima Bike Rack and cargo tray mounted on top of the trailer, just in case (actually it's always full too!) A guy was looking at my bike and seeing the trailer and all the electronics and said... "Crap, you got everyhing but the kitchen sink there!". I am now looking fot a kitchen sink charm that I can put on my key ring.

GoldWingGL
10-25-2006, 12:59 PM
John,

Well I can do you one better than that, and you will have the sink?LOL

That?s funny because I once told a couple guys outside Crescent City Ca. that my Trailer folded out to have 3 bedrooms and a swimming pool. They loved that?lol

Jim, can you even see the mirrors, or rather use the mirrors?

No problem using the mirrors. The only blind spot is directly behind the bike for about 1/2 a car length. Lanes on either side are fully visable.

Well, let's see if I do this right and get the picture in!

I am a full timer. I've got an 05 HD Deluxe and I tow a 50cf cargo trailer. I have a two room tent but arn't lucky enough to have the pool like the guy up above :D I do have the Coleman propane instant hot water heater though. My bike and I are called Boomer. We spend our time volunteering to help the homeless in Portland and I am also an active member of the CMA. I've been keeping my eye on the Patriot Guard Riders and thinking of joining up with them also. Later - Boomer

Another ST1300 here.
30,000+ miles also.

Took advantage of backed-up traffic to snap this pic on the way to MoonSTOC II last year.
Others were looking at us like "Damn tourists!", but for the record WE RIDE! I don't take many pictures on the road. So I don't pass up many sitting still opportunities to snap one or two.

Wife said, "You want me to get off in the middle of traffic??"

Sounds like I'm gonna be the oddball around here.

My wife and I ride old dinosaurs. Mine is an 84 Honda VF1000F Interceptor. Set up with a tank bag, Hondaline luggage rack, soft saddlebags and a tail bag.

Jean is riding a 86 Honda VFR750. Similar set-up but with a Ventura rack.

I know that these are not your stereotypical touring bikes but they work pretty well for sport touring. 500 mile plus days are not an issue at all with reasonable comfort. It does force you to be creative in packing especially when both of us tend to overpack.

We are also people that like to eat while camping and my wife likes to see what she can come up with using a single burner stove and the campfire. How do we manage to gain weight when moto-camping?

Two wheels and the wind in your face - that's all that's important. It's great you and your wife ride together. My wife wants her own bike now too. I love getting away from the lights and noise. As to the weight... sounds like your wife's doing a great job!!

My first liter bike!! What memories that brings back. First bike that my wife (then girlfriend)
rode with me. Been alot of miles together on bikes since then.

I resemble that remark!! I, too, have gain weight when moto-camping. We get pretty creative and innovative when we moto-camp.
How about a nice, filling, piping hot breakfast in about 20 minutes that basically cooks itself and has no dirty dishes? :wow1:
Can't let the cat-out-of-the-bag yet. I will be unveiling this at the next CampSTOC in April. (Sorry about the teaser but ya see we have this thing... kinda like a contest... a who can out do who... sorta thing. Was really cool at last years CampSTOC. Has kinda become a tradition to see what can be done while camping.)

If anyone is interested in CampSTOC, check out this link... You'll even see a familar face.

http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17109

Even though this is primarily a ST1100/1300 event, we welcome all rides. If you ride and camp (duh,,,, moto-campers) this event is for you. Hope to see lots of folks there.

Have always had a soft spot for older kind of bikes, have owned a lot, but my latest and last ride is a Ural Patrol, outfitted for longer rides and a trailer, it is also my daily rider and primary and solitary means of transport. I do like being able to patch my own tubes, change my own tires and not have to shell out $$ to mechs...not that they don't deserve it...but I cannot afford it.....http://www.motocampers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=227&pictureid=3104&thumb=1 ('http://www.motocampers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=227&pictureid=3104')

The 27' Scout and sidecar belonged to my great-uncle and It's taken me awhile but I managed to get them back on the road this spring. Still have a few bugs to work out but I plan on doing some shorter camping trips on it. Should be fun. The bobber has been another work in progress over the last two years. Hunting down parts and fabricating takes a little time but I just took it for a test ride last week. Got a few bugs to work out in that one too but she promises to be a real hoot to play with! :D

I have a 2009 Victory Vision, and just bought a Cycle Kamp, that I have yet to pick up. Really looking forward to using it. I also have a 2010 KTM Adventure, its my get around town and in the woods ride. Love both my bikes, and they both serve a unique purpose.

I tour on a '97 Honda PC800 Pacific Coast. For more off-highway I use a 1989 Honda XL600V TransAlp, and for day trips I might take my 1984 Honda VF500F Interceptor or my 1984 VT500 Ascot. Oldies but goodies.

That is gonna be a big jump for you. Those 1300 bikes are really large. I went from the 650 Honda to the 1100 and was surprised how much larger it was. The 1300 was even more. Heavy Bikes..be careful an have fun. None of those bikes have ABS breaking....something I didn't realize that I needed until I traded for the FJR and ultimately the 800GS BMW.

She'll be ok ... She probably decided she wanted the more comfortable ride that a larger bike would give her. And I'm sure she weighed her choices.
Good for her.

I had a 1300 R too ... nice bike, and you will appreciate the much smoother ride!
Mine (an 04 I think) had a single disc up front and didn't have the best stopping power. Try a few power stops in a parking lot just to get a feel for it ... and besides it's fun to do P^

If I hadn't see your scooter with my own eyes at the Northwoods Campout...you would have a hard time convincing me there was a scooter "under all that baggage":D

At Northwoods I had paired the baggage down some. Planning on a Fall trip down your way then extending it into Florida to visit my brother. I'll probable have the load paired down a little more by that time. Of course the license plate is kind of a give a way and the 3 Motocampers decals on the rear help you to know there is something other than baggage going down the road.
