G'day all....great forum y'all got here. I recently bought an ST1300 with intention of riding the "big circle".. that is to say, all the way around Australia....the ideas for luggage I have seen in this forum are great, not to mention all the other info..... crikey, I reckon I don't realy have to think for myself... just look in here and it hits me right between the eyes... thanks.

Welcome to the forum!WELCOME!

Lots of good folk here with lots of experience. We're going to be really interested in your preparations for your trip as well as how it goes. Be sure to keep us up to speed! It sounds great though a lot of it is through some minimally populated areas.

Since it is an ST1300, don't forget to check out www.st-owners.com (if you haven't already and provided I haven't violated a rule by posting this...) :D Lots of good stuff over there too... Personally, I like them both as they address different aspects of motorcycling...

Thanks all for the wonderful welcome.....the trip should cover 16,000 Klm... not sure of duration, hope to see all we can on the way... my Bro is prepping his '06 FJR with a trailer at the moment, I am building a topbox ( trunk ??) approximately 4 times larger than any available on the market...it will replace the rear seat and extend rearward to a point almost 8 inches behind the parcel rack and a width almost equal to that of the fitted panniers.. with a height ( at parcel rack ) of 12 inches.... put it this way... it's huge!! It's also my first attempt of such a project so is takeing a while... and frustrateing !!

I will sure keep you all posted as we progress.... keep in mind though, the topbox is being built in my spare time, like... weekends.... so , don't hold your breath :)

Thanks again all

Greg

Hey, Swampfox. Do you know Hans ten Broeke? He just did exactly the same thing with his ST (except his top box wasn't as big.) He's Dutch and lives in the Netherlands but speaks wonderful English. If you want to compare notes with somebody who's BTDT, I'm sure he'd be willing to share his experience with you. Let me know if you want any of his contact info.

When you post, there is a manage attachments button under the smilies... if you click that you can attach a pic from your computer.

How hard will it be to open the side bags?

Good question Rick.... as you see, the box is recessed to allow access to the pannier key and the pannier retaining device...it is not entirely necessary but for ease of use, I have several keys cut which I will cut the long handles off and fit with " radio nobs ", this should be handy.

I hope this answers your question mate.
