Ok I'm a bit confused. I have an '07 Road King that I put the converter kit on that turns the rear turn signals into run/turn/brake lights. When I get the wiring harnes for the trailer, that's a four flat connector. Do I still need the 5 to 4 converter?
I've searched forums and manufacturers websites and still can't find a straight answer. Hopefully someone here has run into this in the past and can enlighten me.
Thanks,
George

I put that on mine ...I really think it should be standard! I plugged the trailer harness in ahead of the converter because My trailer has amber turn signals,I would like the red lenses for the turn signals, but since i dont have them I didnt want to have amber brake lights........If I had red lenses I could plug in after the converter..

Good morning
Be aware that some of the converters cannot handle the extra load and will BUZZ or over heat. If so, you will need to plug in before the converter and run 5 wires.

That's something I didn't think of. I did replace all the trailer lights with LED's because I'm still running the stock alternator. Do you think that might still strain the converter? I was also planning on using isolation relays, but with the low draw of LED lights I don't know if it'll be enough of a load to trigger the relays. Any thought's on that also?

George,
BUT, again, be sure to ground the lights to the trailer ...

Sometimes I'm a little sloooowww on the uptake. Would I still need to ground the lights to the trailer if I was planning on running a ground wire from the connector to each of the lights?

G-wizz wiring should work fine. I have my '08 Ultra wired that way and have alot of extra LED lights on my cargo trailer. Have pulled it over 25,000 miles without any problems. Attached a picture if it uploaded right you can see all the lights plus a 3 light bar on the tour pack that is a third brake light.

In order for the LED lights to work properly on Whatevers, and a buddys trailer, I had to ground the lights (white wire to frame).
Before I did that, the lights acted weird ... Couldn't get the turn signals or brake lights to work right.
How I did it was to splice a pigtail wire off the white wire to a bolt on the frame.
Problem went away ...
I think this has somthing to do with the way Harley wires their bikes now ...
G wizz
Sorry to be a pest asking stupid questions. Was the pigtail you grounded to the frame in addition to running a ground wire to the lights? Or did you just run the ground from each light to the frame? If I'm reading you correctly I'm thinking it's in addition to running a ground to each light. Shouldn't be too much of a problem to do. Thanks for the heads up, I would be going nuts trying to troubleshoot this one. :)

Not a problem ... That's what we're here for, to help when we can ...
If your trailer is "prewired" with the white wire already going from the trailer lights to the plug, it's easyest to just splice in a wire to the frame.
If, on the other hand, you are wiring your trailer from scratch, it's simpler to just run the white wire from each trailer light to the frame near the light.
Then at the tongue, ground the white wire thats coming from the plug, to the frame. No need to run a white wire the full lenght of the trailer.
Clear as mud?
Got it thanks...Finally have it all planned out just need to complete everything now. :D

But you didn't ask ...
That's okay.. my friend put my lights back the way they were.. he said my unit was not plug n play...even after tesing all the wires, he got iw orking but something fizzled.. someone thought he may have just not hooked it up right.....

I also run the isolator relay package. Don't want to risk anything messing with the bike electronics. My Timeout documention doesn't mention having a frame ground anywhere so I added one just in case it didn't have one already.

My Aspen Camper's lights wern't grounded to the frame either, and until I added a ground wire, I was having problems with the trailer lights acting up on occasion.
G wizz
Thats good to know G wizz, I will be sure and check out my new Aspen when it gets here. Grounds are the single biggest problem with trailer lights in my book.

Which is why I was planning on running a ground to each light. I might still do that AND ground the trailer. Overkill IS my middle name.
