I wear Magnum Stealth II side zip boots: camping, riding, working, standing, hiking, or even going out on the town. I love my boots! Look at the feet of most cops, firemen, or ems personnel, and chances are this is what they'll have on. Comfortable enough to walk in all day, great grip, dressy enough to wear with a sport coat, padded ankles... I couldn't imagine wearing any other type of shoes or boots. They may not be quite as protective as riding boots, but they're better than just about everything else.
This model is not supposed to be waterproof, but I've never had a drop of water soak through. They also have waterproof versions.
Downside? I'm often asked if I'm a cop or prison guard. :rolleyes:
Suggested retail is $95, but you can usually find them for less.

I was at a new Gander Mountain store here in Charleston Saturday before work started and was eying the 'Danner' brand of this type of boot I have been needing a new work boot and had been thinking on the short Kochman riding boots as I have heard they are very comfortable walking boot also. After seeing these in person I have changed my mind, They had the short 6 inch version with side zip and goretex for $125, or the 8 inch lace ups for the same price, They do look good enough for just about any outing and as you say they have to be comfortable, seemed like some sort of gel insert on the footpad. Have you seen this brand and if so how do the 2 compare? I also think they would be good for the local rides like running errands where my oxtar matrix are a little over kill.

I've had these boots in the past and they are very comfortable. Although not as protective as riding boots, more comfortable boots get worn more often. I like to hike and walk around while riding and the riding boots I've had aren't worth a damn for walking in, so a boot like this is a good trade off for me, some protection but comfort for walking too.

Had a pair of magnums before. While they were nice, I found that the Ridge Air Tacs are much more comfortable if you plan to do any standing around, alot of walking (at rallies, etc) The heels have air cushions build in. My current ones are side zips and are water resistant. Some water gets in if you really ride thru a deep puddle in a downpour. Most rain- stays dry. Developed heel pain from the last job I had on my feet too much, so I need the extra cushioning. You might not, but the Air Tacs were designed for alot of walking compared to the Magnums. Lowest cost I could find is online thru Brigade Quartermasters.

I wear the Bates Ultra-Lite boot, purchased at Academy.

These boots have kept my feet comfortable in a wide temperature range (32 to 102 degrees) and dry in some light rain (have not worn them in a heavy rain, yet).
There are 3 big +'s for me with this boots:
1) As described in the name, they are "lite," like wearing a tennis shoe;
2) They come in a wide width, which is great for my "EEE" width big foot :eek:; and
3) Price...$59.99 :)

Yes, the Magnum IS a cop boot! I've had the same pair of Magnums for 5 years and they are very durable and comfortable.
I believe I paid about $60 from a Police Supply store.
Having recently retired from the police force, I'm forcing these into camp duty. They look like they will last several more years. Definitely a best buy!

I have three pairs of this type of boot. One pair of Iron Age and two slightly diffrent Red Wings. They are all steel toed and the most comfortable boots I own. One thing I really like about my Red Wings is that they have balistic nylon/kevlar over the toe caps so there is no scuffing from the shifter peg when I ride.
