Great park. Might be a little chilly in Feb but that will keep the traffic down and means a nice campfire.

Its been a year or two since I had a aussie pie at the motorcycle museum and if I remember right its just south of there or was it north of there ???
I see there will be electric sites close by for those iof us that may require a heating blanket as Feb can be a bit nippy LOL

I like it :
Area Attractions: Located nearby are Hill Country State Natural Area, Lost Maples State Natural Area, Devil's Sinkhole State Natural Area, and Kickapoo Cavern State Park. Also nearby are John Nance "Cactus Jack" Garner Museum in Uvalde; the ruins of historic Mission Nuestra Seņora de la Candelaria del Caņon, founded in 1749; Camp Sabinal (a U.S. Cavalry post and later Texas Ranger camp) established 1856; and Fort Inge, established 1849. For more information on activities in this area, visit the Texas Hill Country River Region web page at www.thcrr.com

I went to the reservations link and the reply was that a tent site at the Oakmont camping area was not available for reservations. What did I do wrong? In February can we show up without reservations?

I recall the confusion about reservations at the Hillbilly Roundup.

Mr. Guy
10-27-2010, 07:05 PM
Well, if I ride down it'll be on road tires, mild gravel would be just fine. But if your going to put a DS ride together, I may spoon on the knobbies and trailer down. Either way would be fine with me. Depending on the weather then, I may trailer down either way.

Trailer down ...Isnt there some rule against tha t,like you are to take back gravel roads all the way to the camping spot ? P^

But we dont have any bufflo or big critters running around down here , just some deer and pigs.

I will be on a street bike just not sure which one yet as its a good location for both but its depends on if I can get the wife to drive the truck and camper

IF I spoon on the knobbies I MAY trailer down. It's not so much riding on knobbies I don't like, it's listening to knobbies that far I don't like.

Even when I had my loud pipe on, I could hear those Dunlop D606 tires over the engine.

Also when the knobbies go on, the windshield and luggage come off. That pig's heavy enough with out adding to it. :D

Hey George, your riding down with the trailers in tow aren't you. ;) You wouldn't catch me leaving MI in February on a bike no matter what. P^

If we're able to come, we'll bring the bikes in the "toy hauler" and tow that with the 4x4.
Otherwise we'd have to ride our bikes through butt deep snow till we found clear roads. On top of that, the chill factor would turn us into popsickles, as the temps here in Feburary are around 0 degres

Sounds like an adventure!

'Nother George sez: should I bring the Yamaha? Is there dirt riding in that area? I've never ridden it more than 300 miles but could do. Hmmm, 1000 miles each way on a 350, that would be a record for me.

Oh, wait, in February? I don't think so! No heated gear on that bike. LipSTick gets the duty, 1100 cc, big alternator, cruise control and stereo.

There was only one hard section on one road other then that you could do it on the HDDS. :D

Woah now! Did I really just hear Guy even suggest such blasphemy as trailering down there?! What has this world come to?! :p

I'm in! To heck with school, I bet I can get out for a couple days.

Dad, any chance we could make a quick detour over to Corpus? I have a few old friends I'd like to go see. Besides, who doesn't want to go swimming in February?! P^

Mr. Jeff
11-22-2010, 07:08 AM
I would be forever shamed if my first Motocamper trip was in passenger seat of a truck. :p

And I shouldn't have any problem keeping up, so long as he goes slow enough for my wee lil 250 to keep up (it tends to max out around 78), especially considering he was the one who taught me to ride. P^

Mr. Jeff
11-22-2010, 08:13 AM
Ha, aye. But considering I'm still going to be driving around here in Oklahoma during December and January, I think I'll be okay in Texas in February P^

Well, sounds like the gauntlet has been thrown down.

Okay, I accept your challenge. P^

Looks like a "family emergency" will be coming up in February, that should get you out of school for a few days.
550 miles, each way, on knobbies because we're going to be doing some DS riding with Trailace while we're there. Plus a side trip to Corpus Christi. Rain, shine, sleet, snow or ice, well, maybe not ice. :D

Is that what you had in mind. :p

Sounds like fun to me, got your camping gear ready to go?

All kidding aside George, he did ride every day last school year that there wasn't ice on the roads. And a few of them were pretty chilly.

Guy/Jeff...
If you need it, you can take a break here in Carrollton. Hot chocolate, bathroom break, warm up. I will ride with you from here. I'm old enough that it's hard for me to twist the throttle much faster than you ride. If the weather gets bad you can pull in close and ride in in the shelter of the GL1800.

Mr. Guy
11-23-2010, 05:39 PM
Thanks Fredric,

But I'm not sure about the details of our trip just yet, plenty of time left for that. I'll let you know what we're going to do as we get closer. But either way, we'd probably want to meet you west of the DFW area, I don't want to subject my son to the traffic in the Metro-mess this early in his riding career, he has so much life left ahead of him I'd hate for him to miss it. :D

When I was 16 my family was on the way home from a 10 day ride through LA and TX and we hit DFW rush hour 1 month after I got my first bike bigger than a 125. To say it was a little stressful would be a HUGE understatement.

Finally got the okay from the boss. Started mentioning it to her back in November, all I would get is the glare. Every time I brought it up, the glare! Now she has a need for me to go. She wants out of a weekend obligation that weekend, so her excuse is me going out of town. Someone has to stay at home to feed the horses and keep our daughter. If she would have just talked to me instead of that glare......we could have worked this out much easier. That glare scares me. Anyone else get that look?

I really would like to be there! BUT. This weather thing in PA. Snow follow by hail by ice by more snow by more ice, etc.
Have a lot of hours on my Honda track drive snow thrower.
The roads for the most part are clear when it warms up in the 30's. Refreezes overnight. This is the problem. Now I see Texas is colder than the state of Alaska?
Come on SPRING.

Sorry many are having to drop out but we will miss ya !If you got a Bushtec hitch, the wiring harness took me longer to attatch than the hitch did. The instructions with the hitch from Bushtec are bullet proof. Just make sure you use the right fasteners for the right application.

i bought a clone from wingstuff.com as the yhad one for $160 wit hfree shipping and the yall seem about the same . Read some reviews and they were all good so I ordered it and the wiring is a plug and play so th longest part shoule be hiding the wiring and Im not as worried about it looking pretty as in being able to haul my trailer to sleep in to Garner. I can always pretty it up later .

i bought a clone from wingstuff.com as the yhad one for $160 wit hfree shipping and the yall seem about the same . Read some reviews and they were all good so I ordered it and the wiring is a plug and play so th longest part shoule be hiding the wiring and Im not as worried about it looking pretty as in being able to haul my trailer to sleep in to Garner. I can always pretty it up later .

I was talking about the fasteners for the hitch not the wiring. Some of them are almost the same, be careful 'cause you can cross thred some of them. DAMHIKT!!!

hey guys, don't mean to interupt, but was watching "Texas Country Reporter" the other night and they did a segment on D'Rose Inn in Leakey, Texas; the town about 9 miles north of Garner State Park. I went to the website www.droseinn.com to search for some information about the area we were going to be in, as I've never been south of Kerrville. That's a pretty neat set-up she's got. Interesting story and couple of neat photos. Really makes me anxious to get there! Anyone who's on the fence about coming to the campout ought to check that site out.

Todd and I left at 0900. Todd went to Midland to visit his brother and I'm in Lordsburg on the way to SD. Thursday was drop dead gorgeous when Todd and I rolled in around 1600. Bob D, Bob Dantein, Art, Dennis, Cool Harvey, and Zig showed shortly after we did. Friday it was a misty rain all day until 1530. Several more folks showed and we went to Leakey for dinner at the Italian place. We did lunch at Los Maples in Utopia. That was the extent of my riding, the roads are not nice when that mixes with the dust and oil.

OK, I'm home. The trip across the desert in NM was really tough. The winds were very strong and it took constant pressure on the left handle grip to keep going straight. Many right hand turns were done leaned left. When I left El Centro CA, there was one of those computer signs that said "Expect snow on the mountain ahead". I had done that late last year and there was a white out, this time lots of snow, but no white out. Lots of wind though and lots of snow along side the highway. I passed one snow plow clearing the right shoulder. Sure wish the weather had been better in TX for those that have never ridden the Sisters.

I know this may not make sense to those who didn't come to this event, but this is a count down of important things I learned at my first "motocamping event":
10. Don't pack paper plates if you aren't going to use them. They look small, but take up a lot of space! I know, I know...many of you have said that exact same thing over and over, but sometimes we just have to find out the hard way.
9. If you're the only one up at 1:15 in the morning, skunks will charge at you with their tail raised! Shrieking like a little girl is a tactic I discovered that seems to stun them for a brief second, enough time to drop into your tent and zip up the fly and door. Thankfully, skunks are afraid of tents and shrieking noises.
8. Cherry cobbler takes more than 20 minutes to bake. The conversation while waiting is worth the few extra minutes.
7. Those little camp chairs are really nice; having your name monogrammed on them is a nice touch.
6. Don't monogram the name "Bob" on them, as the campground is full of people named Bob. Someone else will probably be sitting in it, someone else named Bob.
5. Girl Scout water WILL start a fire. It will also flame up on a boot or pants leg. I knew this from before, but am thankful for the reminder.
4. Jiffy Pop Popcorn is considered "Modern American Technology" in Russia.
3. If you do something odd, funny or strange, you user name is subject to change on this site.
2. Mac makes some great biscuits. Arrive a day early if you want some, because "Biscuit groupies" arrive and eat them all up the next morning before you can get any.
1. Drifting over that yellow line in a tight, downhill, wet curve IS NOT a COMFORTING FEELING! Note to self; don't forget to look where you want to go, not where you're afraid you're going to end up!
Thanks to everyone there for letting me be a part of your fun. I hope to make some more of these in the future, and meet some more people. There was a gentleman who arrived late Saturday afternoon. I met him when he arrived, then he left to go set up camp and I never got to talk to him again. He said he was new to the site, and I apologize, but I can't remember his name. I hope he got to meet some of you great people as well.

Thanks to Rick for putting this together. I enjoyed the opportunity to chat with everyone. Too bad the weather wasn't more cooperative. TPadden, Finalchecker and myself decided the proper thing to do was hit the road. We were just packing when Billy Cooper showed up to say hello. A few minutes later Trailace, Arlo and ToeJam showed up on their dirt mobiles.

46 miles north the misty, foggy conditions cleared and I had good waether all the way home. A big tail wind pushed me up thru Oklahoma and across Missouri bearing 50+mpg. Pretty good considering how I was packed! ;)

Mac took a lot of ribbing. I teased him about his new Motoport but it really does looks good. It appears to fit perfectly and made very well. I like the color combination he chose too. P^

I didn't take the normal amount of pictures because I didn't want the camera hanging around my neck in the rain. You can see what I did get here:

I have now made my first motocamper camp out. I got there about 2 on Saturday. Finally found the camp fire and got a front row seat.

Also now have a sticker. How does the campout counter work. I now have one.

I met a bunch of good folks, but had a hard time relating names and screen names. Sure were a lot of Bobs.

After seeing all the Kermit chairs, I think that will be my next camping buy.
The pico chair is too hard to pack. There is not enough room for me if I place it flat on the back seat or on the BMR rack I have installed over the back seat. So it must be vertical which makes the weight a little higher.

BTW, I was the guy riding the red R1200RT.

Whew I just got home a hour ago. We packed up Sat and moved to Kerrville park had ribeye's for dinner . Kerrville was pretty good last year but this year had luke warm water for shower and no one but us there , must be everybody had to work on Monday.
I got back in town but whe I was taking a shower last night at Kerrville I heard a pop and burning feeling from my knee which has been bothering me . After that I couldnt hardly walk on my left leg couldnt sleep from the pain . Pretty much hung around camp with little sleep until this morning and Bob (hope i got the name right as I owe him) helped me pack up and we rode to Fredricksberg where he headed to Enchanted rock for more camping . I headed home to the Ortho appointment my wife had made for me and I made it at . I rode from fredricksbreg to Round Rock TX with out putting my legt leg down or really stopping at all until a red light in round rock. My son in law drove me to the appoinement and the Doc thikns I tore my missgus (spelling ? ) whichhe said explains why side pressure could make my leg buckle. My knee is swoolen and looks even fater tahn the right one, The fix didnt sound like fun and I have a MRI on Weds to take a closer look . Either way I get two weeks off work as Im supposed to rest the knee. Still was a good ride (though I Arrived late as normal) and I enjoyed the ride from motorcycle stop in leaky to Kerrville par k , and it was even more fun hauling the camper LOL some of those turns were not made for a wing to be hauling a camper at higher than posted LOL will keep you on your toes well sort of as I was holding my own but those young wipper snappers on those critch rockets were trying to pass. We ate lunch at the Motorcycle Stop and I bought a T-shirt though I only rode on Two this trip I have done all three before .
Over all a fun trip and good to meet so many new riders well new to me

Probably the last one home - rolled in last night with 6-7K. Last leg was a 1100 mile one dayer from Austin Texas to Tampa; unbelievable rain passing through Baton
Rouge. I swear there were times I was swimming beside my motorcycle with visibility so poor I couldn't see it! Left Austin at 6AM and got home a couple
minutes before Midnight.

Great trip; really enjoyed camping in Texas (Garner and Balmorhea SP's), a snow/ ice storm in central California going through the Tajon Pass, and a Johnny Rivers concert in the Yuma Az. fairgrounds.

No problems on the trip; it was the Motocampers event that got me out of the house and on the road! .... and as a plus I got to follow Mike Purpera and Jeff Meede around .....:D

Oh bummer. No worries though. Better deleted than a smashed camera :)

Cheers,
Pete
