I've put together a charcoal grill that I carry on my KLR that is cheap and works very well. I use a stainless steel collander for the fire bowl. You can get them for about $5 in all kinds of sizes at most cookware stores. Get one that has a stand on the bottom to keep it off of the table. For the grill, I use a cooling rack - again you can get them at cooking stores for about $5.
Put the charcoal in the collander, stick in a firestarter and light her up. Once the coals are ready, put the grill on top and cook away.
Works great, it cheap, and easy to carry on a bike.

Sounds like it would work! I would likely put it on the ground though...i tried the foil bbq thing once and it was not what I figured it would be...I am used to real grilling with a gas flame and charcoal is not my thing but I guess if it works why not..
