Thought I'd go with a more minimalistic approach on my last motocamping adventure. Tried making a go of spending a couple of nights with nothing more than a tarp for shelter. There are several ways to put up a tarp (and feel free to add to these) but I think that using either trekking poles or ropes tied to stationary objects like trees and bikes are pretty much the norm.
Well, instead of trekking poles, how about wading staffs? I got a pair of them at Dick's for 19.99 a piece (much less than the name brand ones that they sell at the fishing stores and websites). Also less expensive than most trekking poles. They're shock-corded, pack up smaller than a trekking pole and fit in a neat little holster that you could even wear on your belt if you plan to use it for what it was really intended. They open up to 52" (plenty high for me) and have a little compass on top. Worked out great, just thought I'd share.
No picture of the one they sell at Dick's so here's a pic of the one for $29 at Cabela's.

Any pics of your tarp set up with the poles?

Pretty basic. Just 2 of these staffs, a tarp (9X12) and a few pegs. Pack size and weight were great. But just in case it had been buggy, I had my little mesh tent in my luggage. Never did take it out though. BTW, the yellow tent isn't mine. It was being inhabitated by a friend who came along.
