Hello,
We are new to this forum and we have already enjoyed what we have read. Hubby and I are planning our first Trip to Strugis this year and are planning to travel out on the Lincoln Highway. Has any body traveled on the Lincoln Hwy from Ohio to Iowa?
We would prefer to stay off the super slab and enjoy the smaller back highways. We are planning on camping and traveling 300-400 miles each day. It is more about the journey, then the destination.
In Iowa we are taking 59 north to 14, then 14 into Rapid City. Any thoughts we be appreciated. Thanks:)

I would suggest that if your going to run secondary roads all the way that you change your daily mileage expectations to a max of 300 miles or less a day unless your the kind of people who are packed up and rolling before 8 am every morning traveling the back roads tends to put your avg.speed down to 45-50 mph

Thanks guys, Looking forward to the journey and meeting lots of new people. We packed and did a test camping trip to Big Bone Lick State Park, near Union Ky. All went well and would recommend the campground, clean and friendly. I will post a picture when I figure out how to..Ha. ha...Keep it safe

If you like old bikes be sure and check out the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum while you are there. They have some beautiful old bikes of all brands there!

I love camping on the grass. Except when the sprinklers come on. :D

A good route except through the Chicago metro area where it goes right through the 'burbs with countless stoplights. Plan a way around and you will have a great trip.

Funny you should ask.... the wife and I are just returning from a trip to Seattle Wa and on the way out, we took Route 30 from Ohio to Ill and then jumped up to Route 20..... Route 30 was a great road and very scenic. Good condition, traffic moved right along, and not too many idiots. In Ill we jumped up to 20 simply because we had reservations at a campground in Yellowstone and didn't want to get there late. On the way back now and running Route 2. Also a nice run but a little boring after a while in the "flatlands"....

US 30 through Northwestern Indiana is fairly heavily populated.
From Valparaiso, IN until you get past the sprawl of the Chicago metro area will be slow going. Last time I was there (about 2 years ago) the pavement was OK though.

You might consider taking 36 across to Springfield IL and then go north. It is good riding across Indiana and the only big city would be Indianapolis.

APOPJ, Have safe trip back home. What was your thoughts on the area around the Chicago suburbs as you traveled on 30? We really want to make good time and I like some stop and go, but not hours of them exspecially if it boiling hot. Does your wife ride her own?

IndyDon, We have rode 36 in almost all of Ohio and into some of Indiana, and as you said it is a good road. Will have to check into the milage for 36 as we are North of it.

I mapped out route 47 in Ohio to route 28 across Indiana, becomes 119 then 136 in Illionis. Heading North on 47 at Fisher, Ill up to RT 30.

Thanks again for everyones comments and thoughts. We are looking forward to our trip, and one day we will to will be retired and not restricted as to the length of our journeys.

28 in Indiana is decent Pavement. Mostly straight road and lots of Corn and Beans.

Denny, Thanks for the info on 28. I think that is what we will try, we want to avoid the Chicago traffic. Can't wait for the next journey. Keep it safe.
