stayed at Greenbelt Nat.park on my trip to Rolling Thunder

http://www.nps.gov/gree/index.htm

I-95 north or south Exit 23 Kenilworth ave south to Greenbelt rd.turn left (or south on Md.201 to east on Md.193) entrance is 1/4 mile on right WATCH FOR IT!!!!!!! trust me lol

exit 23 is 1 exit north of U.S.rt.50(New York ave.)

Baltimore-Washington Pkwy take the Greenbelt Rd. exit go west park on left about 1/4 mile

camping within 10 miles of downtown Washington D.C. for only $16.00 a nite what a deal lots of trees shade woods etc. I stated in loop "D" 2 bathrooms both reasonably clean especially for Memorial day weekend (made my reservation 5/27/10 only 6 sites left at that time)the bathhouse closest to me had the shower in it plenty of hot water

upsides.... safe, district 5 U.S. Park Police is headquartered right at the entrance, sites have plenty of shade, short ride to everywhere in D.C. , the price

downside.... they are having a tick problem right now (I sprayed my self with "DEET" my brother and I never found a tick )
no spots have electricity or water however water spigots are space all along the roads so its never a long walk and then there was the tree of "death" pics of this to follow lets just say don't camp in D 157

yes I will camp there again

PS.the tree of death covered in vines 2-3 feet deep at least 80 feet up all the stems had 3 leaves (poison ivy)

That's good news. In the past I've avoided camping in PG county. I've heard some bad things about it. Nice to have a first hand account. Glad you had a good experience. Maybe I'll give it a try.

Wow, this review brings back some memories! I grew up about a mile away from Greenbelt Park, before it was a "park". I used to hike, camp and fish there back when it was all woods, no roads at all, no campground, no ranger station. Civilization has encroached from all sides into the areas where I used to hang out though. I'm dating myself, and it's hard for me to believe it myself sometimes, but that was 50 years ago! Staying at this campground is on my must do list for next year, when we travel to the east coast.

I'm glad it brought back memories for you I was very pleased to find this park. commercial campgrounds around D.C. charge from $40-$60 a nite so I was happy at the fee per nite then I got there and quite happy with the park itself
