Greetings... heading up the coastline on a solo trip from CA to Seattle area. Anyone have any advice on nice campgrounds from say, Arcata, CA thru WA, along the coast? Just started planning for a late July, early August trip, taking my time. Any 'not to miss' spots would be appreciated...first timer up in OR and WA. Thanks in advance!!

Jimbo,

Welcome to the site….
Just a few suggestions can be found on my website. Just click on the trailer for west coast travel suggestions. For some reason we have found the Crescent City KOA a nice place to stay and have been a few times. Really anything west coast is great.

When you get near Pacific Pity, Oregon, you can jump off the 101 near Beaver, Or and go East up the Trask Mountain. Lots of nice secluded camping up there. Nodody for miles around and nice State run campgrounds. About 20 minutes off Pacific Coast 101. NOTE: The road turns to gravel near the top of the range.

I've camped in many of the Washington and Oregon State Parks. There a lot of them on the Oregon coast especially.
You have some nice ones in California too
Here's links to them.

Sounds like a GRATE trip !!!!

Santa Cruz mtns are wonderful NOT to be missed in my book! Find Boulder crk on your map, and ride Skyline rd (hwy 9 is far too busy, in my opinion) and consider hitting Big Basin State Park for an overnighter, or for a couple hours.

Has anyone said anything about Harris Beach, Oregon?? If you cant get an overnight spot there, you really should consider stopping for an hour and walking down to the tide-pools. i think they are the best in Oregon.

You really should consider a side-trip on the Smith river rd (oregon)!! i love it there, no traffic, no worries, free camping off most of the paved blm roads. Link to other thread: http://www.motocampers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3088

another side trip, just north of Cresent City CA, would be a short loop to Jedediah Smith SP (camping), and into the Redwoods!! i'd prolly take hwy 199 into, and then loop back via hwy 197 , dropping you onto hwy 1. This would add prolly 10-12 miles; but you would see some AMAZING trees and ferns, as well as the river. (once i saw an otter playing in the river there at Jedediah Park day-use area ... just saying) (i like Stout Grove as one of my favorites - redwood grove - but it is a dirt road)

And you are going to take a ferry trip to the San Juan islands arent you???? As a motorcycle you get to cut to the front of the line hehe; take that cagers.

ALSO, as i will be taking a trip somewhat like yours in 5 or 6 weeks, could you PLEASE post-up your stops and thoughts about your trip (anything would be great. a trip report would be super)

i'll be starting in Santa Barbara, and ending in Seattle, or more properly: The San Juan Islands!!! Canada is not in the cards, i'm sorry to say :(

Update ~

i'll prolly leave Southern Calli in a week, or so... prolly wiff a long stop in Santa Cruz area. Or not, depending.

The main-squeeze is shi**ing bricks over some bonding-BS .. or control over me .... she thinks she's just gotta exercise. SHEEZE!! Co-dependancy blows chunks. Thank goodness it aint hard to put 40 miles between us. But, depending; i'll be hitting the road for a good long while. .... And Thatz Just The Way It Is..... (insert Bob Dylan song here)

- hwy 1 north; beach-stops@ Santa Barbara, Pismo, Montona de Oro,
- hwy 1 still; Big Sur area (maybe) big stop @ santa cruz mtns (twisties, baby, twisties)
- straightest shot Sacramento area (friends) no, havent picked a route
- I 5 to Redding (boring x10)
- More sweet-sweet twisties, prolly to coast, maybe out and back.
- Southern and mid Oregon. time; undecided.
- Portland. + east, and west, on columbia river gorge (city: hood river)
- Seattle area, San Juan Islands , Rainy Hwy ....

Oops!!! Did i just jack this thread???? sorrrry.......

If you are in the Big Sur area, stop and eat lunch at Lucia Lodge, great fish and chips. Don't blink or you will miss it! :D

If you want to really treat yourself, the Ventana Inn and Spa has one of the best places to eat that I've been to. I couldn't afford to stay there as the rooms go from $450.00 to $1100.00 per night, but the restaurant prices were surprisingly reasonable. P^

If you make it as far north as Astoria, OR, the KOA is very nice.

If you are coming as far as Seattle, ride up (east) along the Columbia River (I84 is the fastest) and south of Hood River is a very nice campground called Tucker Park near the very small town of Odell.

After Hood River, cross the River and ride west to Carson and then north on the Wind River Road to FS 25 which heads north to Randle. There's all sorts of camping along the segment north of Carson.

As a bonus, take FS99 up to Windy Ridge and see the best side of Mt. St. Helens.

Finally ---- i'm leaving today !!!!!!!!!!! :D:D:D

(change in plans: i'll have my motorcycle on the back of the RV, due to the amount of rain expected in the PNW (pacific north Wet) )

First stop, Big Basin Redwood park, Santa Cruz mtns.
i'll off-load the bike, and spend 4 days hitting the twisties !!!

So, if you see a small RV, with an Orange bike on the back, and a hot blonde in the passenger seat - yes, we kissed and made up - Then that's me :)

P^P^P^

The trip is going well...,
Pozo area was first stop, or should I say false start, as I stayed there one night and then turned back ... don't ask ... but now the hot blonde is no longer with me ...

I guess if I'm giving a trip report I'd better start my own thread .....

But, in the meantime .... hwy 26, west, outta Mt Shasta CA , is a very nice side-leg .
!!! Hwy 25, Castle Crags too !!! ,
( I looped these two together, but you prolly won't wanna do that if a little bit of gravel is scary ; gravel @ 12 to 20 milemarkers, on hwy 25 )
