I spent one night, a Sunday in late June, 2005, in a beautiful small Army Corp of Engineers campground, Richey Cove Campground, located on Council Grove Lake, about 3 miles north of Council Grove, KS on state road 177. It's about 25 miles south of I-70's exit 313 on 177. Council Grove has several historic sites because it was the last major stop on the Santa Fe Trail where trees were plentiful and wagoneers could obtain wood to make spare axles and other parts they might need. Beyond Council Grove were the vast open grassy plains and travelers were subject to Indian attack.
The campground was very nice. The hosts, an older couple, were very "biker friendly" and since it was a Sunday night before the July 4th holiday weekend the campground was virtually empty. I counted two other sets of campers, a family in a tent located a couple of hundred yards or so from me to one side and a retired couple in a trailer a couple of hundred yards to the other side of me. The fee for my "tent" site was $11.00 for the night (2005 fees ranged from $11-$16 per night). It did not include water or electricity, but water was available nearby and I didn't need electricity anyway. Many sites with these amenities were available. This campground had a great bathroom/shower combination area. Once you went in you locked the door and had the entire "bathroom suite" to yourself. Oh yeah, it felt really good to take a shower and shave!
Each of the campsites had a covered picnic table, grill and fire ring, as well as a paved pull-in/parking space. The entire area, including the "bathroom suite" I used, was very clean and well kept up. I was impressed.
I recommend this campground if you happen to be passing through the Council Grove area on US-56 or if passing through Kansas on I-70. By the way, there is a very historic restaurant in Council Grove called The Hays House Historic Restaurant & Tavern (http://www.hayshouse.com/). It's been there since 1857! Unfortunately, it is closed on Sunday evenings and Mondays (at least in 2005), so I cannot report on the food, but was told by a local woman the food is very good.
