Date of visit:
Apr, 2003

Weather:
Perfect.

Campground Condition:

Clean, flat areas great for setting up tents.
The bathroom/shower facilities are nice.
The park ranger actually brought us free firewood, we gladly 'donated' to the State Park.
This is a very scenic park and we only used it as a stopping point on our way to Arkansas so we didn't have the time to really see what attractions this park had to offer.Area Riding:
This part of Oklahoma is the beginning of some mountain ranges, Quachita and Kiamichi and as such, serve as the gateway to the Ozarks.

There are plenty of twisty roads in the area and you are only about 50 miles from Hwy 1 (Talimena Scenic Drive)

If you do head to the Talimena Drive, try to ride Hwy 82, from Red Oak (hwy 270) to Talihina, OK, it's a very nice road.

I've also camped in this park, and brought my son's Cub Scout pack a few times. If you visit be sure to bring some walking shoes, as there are several nice hiking trails in the park. The cave that is the parks namesake is not much of a cave, but there are plenty of rocks for boulder hopping on. These rocks were the hideout of several old west outlaws, including Belle Starr, queen of the outlaws. In addition to planned tent sites there are several primitive areas you can camp in, but all of these are down so-so to bad dirt roads and have no amenities.

I remember that place and I think I was lost going there because it was 1800 miles from Houston.
