Last weekend I was mentally tied up in knots and needed a break to clear my head. I thought the best way to do this was to use the time to explore a new to me campground in the southern part of the state where I live here in WV.
Camp Creek State Park Campground and Forest located near Camp Creek WV.
I let Google Maps tell me the best way to get there.....and after giving it about 10 seconds of thought I rejected the route. Therefore, I set the GPS for my destination and set out on my own route....ignoring the instruction from the GPS until I was ready to listen. Remmember this trip started out as a "mental house clearing"....and I wasn't in anykind of mood to listen to another voice telling me what to do!
My ride took me from Logan County, WV SE toward Princeton, WV on State Route 10. If you like twisty rides and mountain roads this road is for you. About 10 miles northwest of Princeton, SR 10 terminates into Hwy 19. North takes you toward Beckley, while South heads off to Princeton. It is a very enjoyable ride. The road to the Campground is very near the Interstate 77 Hwy exit for the town of Camp Creek.
My ride was on a very warm spring day in the first part of April. Trees and flowers were blooming everywhere. The mountains of WV in the springtime are filled with colors from the Redbuds, Dogwoods, and others. It is beautiful to say the least...not to leave out the fragrance of Mountain Onions....Ramps wafting down the hillsides.
Anyway the spring floods did a real number on this campground. The creek that runs thru it very obviously turned into a torrent, uprooting hundreds of trees and washing out the creek bank. The state is doing it's best to rebuild the camping areas...by laying down new gravel beds down for vehicles and campers. For me it would have a long way to go as a tent camper.
Perhaps later during the summer of 2010 this place will have recovered.
