Yesterday I went or my first ride since last May and two back surgeries! It was a short 55 mile loop and by the time I got home I was hurting. The seating/peg relationship is a bit short and causes a lot of pain. Medium size bumps had me crossing my eyes. I was wondering if an AirHawk pad could take care of both issues.

Anyone use them? Thanks.

I've had back surgery and I've owned different types of bikes...in regards to riding verses back pain...I find that bikes with "forward controls"..i.e. many cruiser types result in basically sitting on your tail bone. Long rides like that on my former cruisers caused a great deal of discomfort. My current bike has the pegs directly under my butt with my knees bent rather that almost straight out. On the cruiser not only the lower back and butt was uncomfortable but my knees being stationary started to really get uncomfortable...especially if I was getting dyhydrated. Most comfortable for me is the pegs below my hips. When the road gets rough (ie crossing rr tracks, potholes and etc) I can lift my butt off the seat protecting my back from road shock. Hopefully this discription makes sense. For me I only tired the gell pad with my cruiser bikes...haven't needed it with my current bike a FJR.

What are you riding? ... Maybe you need somthing with a cushier suspension ??

I ride a BMW R1150R with a Corbin Saddle. I also have bar backs so the position is good except I need a bit more room between the pegs and seat. After I just started this thread I went ahead and ordered an AirHawk. If that doesn't work I'll get a peg lowering kit from Wunderlich.

My suspension is quite cushy although I have been looking for an adventure tourer for the longer suspension.

One of the things I REALLY like about my DR650 is the 10" of suspension travel on it. 10" will soak up a LOT of road bumps. And having your feet under you instead of out front, you can even stand up for the rough bumps, double good.

I used an Airhawk pad on the flatter seat of my BMW K75RT for longer rides and loved it. You get a little disconnected feeling at first but it's very comfy. I have a Corbin stepped seat on my ST1300 and the airhawk doesn't fit that seat type at all. It's a shame too because the Corbin is Hard with a captial H. I added a beadrider to the Corbin to help with hot spots but I still start squirming after that first tank.

Glad to hear it's working out for you Steve, Cowboy5 has one and he loves his. I'm not a fan of the Corbin seat the previous owner installed on my Strom. I tried to trade it for a stock seat in Canada from a guy I ran into from Stromtrooper's site, but it was too tall for him. I think mine was "broken in" to the previous owners backside!

hortok, I use a sheepskin from Alaska leather on my ST1100 with corbin seat. Yes, the seat is hard but it seems to suit me. The ST is now a hack and I ride it with & without the sheepskin pad. With it an all day ride is no trouble, but I never ride much more than an hour at a time. It worked well on a 15,256 mile trip to Alaska/Canada and back.

I had a very hard seat on my 09 Kingpin (my fault, I tried cutting out foam and adding gel to get lower on the bike.. BIIIG mistake) and I could use a sheepskin for lesser rides, but I had to have an airhawk pad for day long trips, and it worked a trick. I thought I was permanently broken after riding down to NC from PA using my sheepskin. Rode to ME from PA a few weeks later and had no problem at all using the airhawk. Trick is to get the minimum amount of air you can possible suspend yourself with, otherwise you feel like you're wobbling on the seat.

Check this guy out... I know several people that have had him rework seats and they ALL love the work he did! http://www.meancitycycles.com/

I've used an Airhawk on my VTX and now the wing and love it and would NOT use anything else. I put a thousand dollar Ultimate on my X ans still need the Airhawk. I've had disc surgery too.

One of the guys at the Chill-Out was raving about the wooden beaded seat covers. I've been meaning to order one. Not the first time I've heard positive things about them. And they're very reasonably priced too. P^

My butt was toast when I got home from the chill out. I am looking real hard ar the Air Hawk pad. Problem now is they offer two different versions of the same thing. But price them a hunderd bucks apart. One is for the rider that doesn't ride far and the other for the one that does. I think they mean rides distances more often and would use the cushion more frequently. Now I need to figure out which one I am. You know when one gets older one finds themselves factoring in " how much longer am I going to get to do this and is the expense justified" based on current facts. Delemma!

All right you guys! Did you hear the "chig chang"! This forum has cost me a bundle....and once again it has it me in the pocket book, err make that my butt....I've ordered one of the Air Hawk pads. I've had a gel pad but that just didn't do the trick. Felt nice for awhile but it does get hot in the summer. Stay tuned..................for details.:D :D

Whosoever, the medium cruiser is the semi coffin shaped one that fits most bikes.
