I am planning a trip to DC to visit a friend in April. I am hoping to get to WV from St. Louis the first day. Anyone out there know of a good place to camp somewere off US Route 33 in West Virginia?

That is a pretty aggressive 1st day ride you have planned....and assuming you will be picking up Hwy 33 at Exit 99 off IH 79 things will slow down a lot once you are on 33. If my memory serves me correct that portion of 33 is a fourlane road but later on it goes to 2 lane. It is mountainous and twisty...not a good combination at the end of a long days ride. The campgrounds Slow Ride suggested are good ones. However, should you not get that far there is a good place to settle down at Huntington,WV (roughly 470 miles from St Louis) just over the Kentucky line. ( My assumption you are traveling on a Bike, if not, by car no problem) Beechfork State Park.

Yes a bike, an ST1300. My buddy in DC said that Huntington WV is about half way. That may be a more realistic game plan! I've heard good things about US route 33. I just hope the weather cooperates! thanks for the info! By the way, I really love this site!.....Thanks.......Steve......

Hwy 33 is great ride...did that same ride last fall. Beechfork is located about 13 miles outside of Huntington and is beautiful campground. I am planning a "shakedown campout" at Beechfork testing some of the new equipment I've picked up for the Cherolala camp meeting. Do you know how to use the Google Map feature that permits you to see photos of the actual roads your route will take you? It's a great tool.

"Hwy 33 is great ride"
my first and only experience with hwy 33 was horrible of course it was winter, snowing at nite with the first flat bed load i ever hauled
A great motorcycle road is usually one that car & truck drivers hate because there are so many curves.....

I live about 130 miles west of you near Columbia, MO. A couple of years ago, we made Huntington, WV the first day, not too hard on the 4 lane.
We were pulling an Aspen with the Wing.

I guess we all have different riding styles. I like to smell ALL them roses along the way. Last spring it took me 5 days from Joplin, Mo to Huntington on my way to the Blue Ridge. The Skyline/ Blue Ridge took me 9 days. I was actually passed twice in 2 days by a couple on a tandem bike! I don't try to see how far I can get in a day, but where's the next neat place to stop? And I HATE the 4 lane!

Trainbagger,I love your style of riding! Did you camp the entire way from Joplin? this time of year I think the weather could be my biggest enemy.
