I'm looking to ride over to West Virginia to camp this weekend. I'd like to stay near Beckley or Fayetteville. Any suggestions? Past experiences?

I sure can't help with camping as I didn't camp there. Went to the mine academy in Beaver several years ago, very senic area. There is a park on the new river gorge that is a must see if your in the area. Nice overlook of the gorge, and turkey roost also, a little climb to the top but worth it. There were picnic areas there also, but don't remember if there was camping. I think its just east of Beaver off the interstate. There are a couple of state parks in the area though that show camping, to the south east of Beckley. Danny

Thanks for the sight-seeing suggestion. I've googled and found several campgrounds, but I'm always leary of the smaller ones...I'm afraid that there will be a gravel/dirt road that I can't negotiate with my VFR. It looks like one of the state parks will be the way to go.

Thanks,
Paul

How much time do you have? Do you prefer primitive or Showers? If you only have a 2 day weekend. There is a beautiful campground that the city of Beckley owns. Lake Stephens is on RT 3. This is a beautiful Lake nestled in the mountains, and if it were me coming from KY I would pick up RT3 in the western end of WV and stick to it, you won't regret it:D If you have more time US RT 60 is a good road after you get past Charleston about 20 miles. This takes you to the end of the New river where it merges with the Gauley River and creates the Kanawha river about 1 mile upstream of Kanawha falls. It will also take you to Lewisburg (1hour from Beckley) this area has all of the history/riding you could want. PM me if you want and I can get an idea of what you want to do and give you some ideas.

number9,

I'm in Tompkinsville (south central KY). A v-strom riding friend from Nicholasville is going with me this weekend. We plan on meeting up in Pikeville and heading into WV from there. We intend to camp Friday and Saturday nights...with Saturday being a full riding day. You're more than welcome to join us for all or part of the trip. If you can't make this trip, maybe we can hook up some other time for some riding.
