Hi all, I just found this site and have been enjoying the wealth of information available in these forums. I've already picked up a couple of tricks I'd never seen anywhere before and will definitely try them this year!

I'm actually just getting started moto-camping and have already learned quite abit from reading these posts. While I've travelled regularly by bike, I've always just booked a room along the way. I'm hoping that this will reduce costs enough to increase the frequency of extended trips. I have camped out of my truck often enough over the years but not much of that equipment will transfer over. Even my Eureka timberland 4 man seems a bit unwieldy on my bike. ( I must have cabin fever, I was test strapping my waterproof BMW gear bag and tent to my seat while it was snowing 18 inches outside of my garage! :)) So into my campmor catalog I've been digging for a replacement.
The roads here up through the Catskills and Adirondacks are phenomenal and just beautiful places to explore, with plenty of campgrounds, both State and Privately owned along the way. I try to travel during the week when everything is a little less travelled and have never had trouble finding either a room or campsite.

Well stay safe and I hope to see you out ther sometime,

Bob

That V-Strom has been mentioned quite often in both Rider and Roadrunner articles. It is becoming avery popular bike for travel. How do you like it?

Bob I have to say I love it, it's a great all around bike. I bought mine just for a trip to AK but have found I enjoy it for everything. Make no mistake though, it's not as "dual sport" as the advertising would like to think, as it does have a couple of limitations. Weight and a lack of ground clearance are the two biggies, and first gear is a little high for any serious trail work. That being said it's a great bike to run gravel roads and "light" trails. I think mine is listed at 427 pounds and it does carry it's weight higher on the bike. A log jumper it's not! :p I've had mine in places it really doesn't belong and it will wear you out trying to keep up with real dirt bikes. I'm not sure what it means this week, but people like to call them "Adventure tourers".

On the other hand if you are looking for a great bike to run to the store on the corner, or run to the store on the other side of the country it does a great job. I've put 700+ mile days on mine with it loaded down and it does fine. It gets great gas mileage, is smooth as glass, and is quite comfy. Some folks have issues with the windshield buffeting their helmet but I've been fine with mine. There are tons of aftermarket windshields out there if you need them.

Take a demo ride on one somewhere if you get the chance. I think you'll like it! P^

I might try to do just that this year up at Americade. For now I'm pretty happy with my Beemer but it just seems that your bike is mentioned in many travel articles. The lighter weight would be appealing though. Who knows. I never say never!

Hey Rick,

Thats a nice Beemer you have there. I love my '04 GT. Are you planning to head up to the BMW OA campout in Oregon this year?

The annual BMWRA rally is going to be held in Pownal, VT formn7/29-8/1 although they say the grounds will be open earlier the week before for anyone going early. There is quite alot of info on the BMWRA or BMWMOA sites under the regional forums (Northeast). Rider mag also has it listed in their rally section. It looks pretty good and I think I'm going to head up, although I may go on the early side before it really gets crowded. But it might be a good time. Lots of other campgrounds in the area as well if it turns out to be too much for me.
