View Full Version : Ikea espresso maker
At Keith's suggestion in post #9 (http://www.motocampers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=249)
I bought the Ikea large espresso maker (they have 2 sizes) last weekend.
I was unable to use it while camping but tried it on the stove top.
As the instructions suggested I filled the bottom with water up to, but, not covering the pressure relief valve and I filled but did not pack tight the coffee filter with very finely ground dark roast beans.
It took a couple of minutes for the water to heat and the top to start filling ; but, then it took no time at all to complete the brewing.
I didn't know how I would be able to know it was done; but, the sputtering of steam told me the water was gone.
I have read before that espresso is not as acidic and extracts less of the caffiene from the beans. I noted that this was not acidic in the least. I can't measure the caffiene without a chem lab (and I'm not putting one together just to do this! :-) )...
Since Chris and I like lattes I used 1/2 of the results in 2 large cups and added 2% milk...
Chris agreed it made a great cup.

I agree! And as you've seen Chris and I will walk out of a campsite to get a latte..
I suspect you could steam the milk in this unit as well... I'll have to try it and see if it makes for a difficult clean up... I'll post a follow up after I try it.

You just need two.. that way they're both ready at the same time, or close...

Never thought of steaming the milk for a GREAT latte. Maybe having the smaller of the two for milk would be the ticket.
Have had mine for over a year and it works like the first day I got it. Even after starting it up for a cup of coffee out in the garage one night. After setting it on the camp stove I looked outside and noticed a neighbor walking by. Stepped outside to say hi! 20-30 minutes later we both smelled something in the air like "BURNING COFFEE"!! Yep, ran back inside and the thing was actually glowing red. DOOOH!! Didn't hurt it at all except that it now matches the head pipes (blue/gold) on my GS. To me this was just the test of all tests where I consider this thing bullet proff. And yes, it makes a GREAT! cup of coffee.
Mark,Just curious, How much are they getting for one now? Have tried to get one or more in the group to have there own so the line for coffee in the morning would be shorter.

If you've got the room and want a decent pseudo espresso (water is too hot for a good espresso) AND make steamed/frothed milk. I've used one of these for years http://www.espressozone.com/2653.html to make milk strong coffee drinks while camping. There's nothing quite like the sound of steaming milk early in the morning, just don't do it too early or you'll make everyone else made.
They are made to last, the handle unscrews (also contains a pressure relief valve). They are a bit large, every easy to clean (I hardly ever washed it, just rinsed out ;-).
I'd write a review, but I stink at that kinda thing.
