Well it's actually Appling, but only 30 minutes from the better known Augusta, GA.

Date of Visit: November 24-26, 2009

Some would say it was chilly last night (30's) and I wouldn't argue. However, I had a beautiful spot on a perfectly clear night so I refused to put the fly on my tent. I went all-mesh and I think that every star in the galaxy was on display and shimmering off the lake (Strom Thurmond Lake at Clarks Hill).

My little 0 degree bag kept me warm and cozy (packs to 7 X 14 and only weighs 3 lbs). No regrets, it was glorious.

There are 93 sites, and this is one of the only campgrounds around that is open year round. Two swimming beaches, a fishing pier, a couple of hiking trails, a pond, and a first-come-first-serve picnic shelter provide for plenty of recreation opportunities right in the campground. Bathroom and shower facilities were available although I didn't make much use of them. Petersburg is 4 miles from the Thurmond Dam and Visitor Center.

:)
Good roads for riding around here too.

Not much in the way of food so either bring your own or plan to ride into Augusta.
