After having missed the Blue Ridge Gathering, I'm stoked about getting another shot at meeting some of you goofballs. Count me in.
Since I live so close, I haven't had a need to use any of the local MC campgrounds. I just ride an hour to get to my own bed. This will be a chance to change all that. In fact, I'm considering trailering down a grill and lots of other non-moto style camping gear for the comfort and convenience of all ya'll, unless that goes against the spirit of the thing. I can even bring along some raw animal parts and a cooler full of beverages. If that sounds like a good idea, let me know here.
I also have a route in mind for a good 5-hour ride or so. This is a popular area so lots of you guys probably have as much experience riding around here as I do, so let's put our heads together and come up with a day-full of twisties to remember.

I just told my wife. Turns out she has plans to be out of town that weekend. That wouldn't be a huge deal except for the minor fact that we have a six-year-old child to look after.
So I'll have to make my RSVP conditional at this point. While this was in the preliminary planning stages, I thought that the plans were for the previous weekend.

I stayed there August 2008 in one of the huts. The a/c didn't quite keep up with the August heat. I should have camped so my bad anyway. This won't be a problem in May, hopefully.
There was a very large area to camp but only one or two bathrooms. I'd really like to make this but Graduation ceremonies will probably be that weekend. I'm putting on my calendar though just in case.

I know it's way early yet, but has anyone planned any routes yet?
Cowboy5 and I will probably just point and shoot the quickest way down and do the scenic route home. He has never done the "Dragon" so we may do that on the way home. I'm really looking forward to riding the Cherohala Parkway as I didn't get to do it the weekend we went to Deal's Gap.
I'm wanting to stop by Tellico Motorcycle Outfitters while I'm down there close. They are geared more toward "Adventure Touring" from the looks of their site.

Hey Steve,
If no one backs out I'll be coming down with a couple of Buddies.
Haven't had a meet yet to plan our route but I like the scenic route through the rural byways of southern Indiana. You get south of Indy into towns like Story, Nashville and Salem... wow beautiful riding in southern In.
Exiting Indiana through Madison, crossing the Ohio River to Milton, Ky....
mmm mmmmm mmmmmmmm. Great riding. Hywy 421 into Ky and connecting with 127 and 27.... a great way to go. IMHO.
So many roads... So little time...

Floorboard extenders? I made a set of those for my Classic. Used aluminum ... moved 'em out an inch.
My floorboards don't drag in the corners now... but the floorboard supports do. Don't know as that is a good thing though ...

I asked my wife this, and she said, ... "Unless there is a McDonalds close by, with their 'dollar meals' ... we'll be cookin".
Don't think I'll eat as good as it looks like you & Ernie did on your Alaska trip though.

There are a couple of pretty good grub spots in Tellico Plains. One route I'd suggest is Hwy 315 either from the north or from the south. The campground is actually located on 315 south of Tellico Plains. Nice empty curvy road going south from the campground.

I don't come over to this site much but thought I'd throw out a couple of bits of info about the Cherohala Cycle Resort and the local area. The resort is a first rate place and the owners (Mark and Renee) are just great folks. Check out the following link to see the place but you'll find their bathroom/showers to be the cleanest around.
http://cycleresort.com/
A couple of places worth seeing is Buck Ball just south of Tellico Plains, a short distance off Hwy 68. Offers a complete 360 degree view from the top of Buck Ball. Just know it's a couple of miles of dirt road to get to the top. Also, up River Road to Bald River falls is a nice ride along the Tellico River to the falls which is right next to the road. Great photo opt while seated on your bike. For exact directions just ask Mark at the campground or any local.
I'm sure “the loop” which includes both the Cherohala Skyway and Tail of the Dragon is a run everyone will want to make that hasn't been to the area before. This loop will take a day if you plan on stopping to see the sights and is both a beautiful and challenging ride. This whole area is just a great place to be if you are a rider so enjoy.
Maybe I'll sneak off and get up there to meet some of you on that weekend. I'm from Mariett GA and it's just a little over two hour run for me to get to the resort. I promise you will not be disappointed in either the resort or the riding.
Oh I almost forgot, Tellico Grains Bakery in downtown Tellico Plains has a great ham and cheese croissant to die for, along with other pastries for breakfast. And although I am usually out riding during lunch I hear their wood fired pizza they only serve on Saturdays at lunch time is out of this world, can't wait to try that some day.

Has anyone been to Tellico Motorcycle Outfitters?
Hey Ironheadziggy76,
I stopped by the Tellico Motorcycle Outfitters a year or so back, shortly after they first opened. They have a nice selection of riding gear but since I have to have TALL sizes I've not frequented the place often.
http://tellicomoto.com/
The owner post on advrider.com and goes by the user name "minimike". I've heard good things about them and both minimike and his wife ride and are very accommodating from what I hear. I've also heard they have maps of suggested rides in the area and I'm sure if you contact them they can fix you up with any information you might need.
Hope this might help...

I just called Buck this morning just to be sure I was quoting G wizz correctly and he confirmed that you don't need a reservation if you are tent camping or bringing your campers. ONLY if you want a cabin.
He also told me they were going to ramp things up a little if they could since the KLR guys would be there also. He said they were planning to get some porta johns in for the larger groups. He also said they were going to expand their cooking for more breakfast options at the store! They are going to allow plenty room for each group of campers, so it shouldn't be a problem to get us all camped in the same area.
As far as payment he told me that you normally pay on the last morning before you leave. $12.00 for a single, $18.00 for couples. Or if two riders have a big enough tent and want to share one they can go under the couples rate.

The RSVP for the Chill Out isn't to reserve a cabin, it's just kinda a way for other forum members to check an see who's gunna be there.
But, it isn't required for you to RSVP, what is required is for you to show up P^

In case you didn't know, there's a rockslide on the dragon and it's closed on the TN side. It's not expected to open before July. I imagine that'll cause a lot more traffic on the cherohala skyway.

After reading some more, it looks like the deals gap section may open in the next week or so, but it will be a dead end until the slide is cleared, so people crossing over the mountain will probably be diverted to the skyway.

Hey folks I've been away for a while. Did I miss anything?
My plans have come together (do you know how hard it is to find a babysitter for a seven-year-old for an entire weekend?) and I'm ready to start packing. I guess I'm bringing along one "guest". He's been a member here for a while but he's never posted. Cue Macjohno to introduce himself. He should at least RSVP so he doesn't have to be my +1.

As far as Deal's Gap is concerned, that's a changing situation. It's been reported that there are times when one lane is passable. I assume there are times, like weekends, when they clear the machinery and allow traffic through. Riders are big business in that area - lots of jobs and taxes on the line - so there's some pressure to maintain the tourism. There's no way to tell for sure what the situation is until the time comes. Either way, you'll be able to ride it.
My daughter has horseback riding lessons every Saturday on Hwy 129 about ten miles this side of Deal's Gap. I see lots of MC traffic going by on Saturdays but I haven't gone down there to check it out yet.

I'm going to visit my silent friend MacjohnO in Nashville this weekend. On the way (actually it's not on the way but what the heck) I plan to stop by Hunt's Lodge for a visit to check the place out. I called the other day to see if someone would be there on Friday and the lady who answered the phone (I think she said her name is Lori) said they have one big communal fire pit but they're considering putting in a few fire rings among the campsites. I lobbied hard for more fire sights. Some of us old boy scouts like to cook on a fire. I'll let you all know what I find there.

Yeah, I know it ain't right. I bought that truck about a month ago. I saw it online, it was at a dealership in Hendersonville, NC. I had a beautiful day so took advantage of it to ride some twisties. Well I got there, lowballed an offer and they took it. Other than leaving one vehicle there and going back for it later, what else could I do?
But if I ever have to load the ST up again (hopefully not), I'll use the trailer. It just barely fit. The truck handled it just fine but it's a real bear getting it out of there.

Back to the subject - Deal's Gap is now open, only from the NC side. Apparently you can now ride it but you have to turn around and ride it back the other way. Still no access from the TN side. That may change by mid-May.

I have a report.
First of all, I found a sweet route out of town for Friday morning. There's a local monthly, owned by the local daily paper which is in turn owned by Scripps. Fred, a neighbor and acquaintance of mine, writes day-trip route reports for it and I found this little gem (http://www.fromthehandlebars.com/news/2009/mar/23/road-reliance/) in their archives. It turned The direct slog down 411 into a great ride. His route passes Hunt's and he speaks highly of an 80-mile loop south to Ducktown on 68, then east on 74 past the Olympic whitewater park, then north on 30 and 315, back to Tellico Plains.
I got to Hunt's at about noon. No one was there but there was a very nice '85 Interceptor parked at the office and a contact phone number chalked up at the office door. I didn't have time to visit so I took a walk around.
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=1663&pictureid=15795
They have a pavillion that's small but probably big enough for 30 of us if we're all willing to get close. It has a bigass gas grill which started giving me ideas about passing the hat and stopping by the butcher shop on the way down to the Chill Out.
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=1663&pictureid=15796
The rest room (can only speak for the men's room) was big and clean. Two big showers with changing benches.
They have the genius to set up an open air cycle shop - a tire changing rack and a steel table with a vice set up between the restrooms and the pavilion.

04-25-2010, 08:26 PM
But there was one thing missing. From what I could see, there was barely enough level ground to set up half a dozen tents. The only great place I saw was among the trees very near the communal fire pit.
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=1663&pictureid=15798
Everything else slants down toward the highway. In this picture it looks like there's a nice flat pasture just beyond the flag pole. Actually there's a 15-foot-deep gully just beyond the drive and what looks like the tree line is actually the spine of a steep ridge. I'd be hard put to find a place where I wouldn't roll downhill.
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=1663&pictureid=15799
So as far as I can tell, the jury's still out. I'm looking forward to hearing about Gary's experience there. Since I didn't even speak with anyone there, it's possible that I just don't know what I'm talking about (that's happened a time or two). Unless they have a nice level pasture hidden away up there on the hill, I'm going to have to be sure to get there as early as possible so I can pitch tent where I won't tumble down hill all night.
Another point on the plus side, it's just about 2 miles from some good eating:

I called Hunts Resort this morning, and talked to Jack, the owner, about level campsites at the campground.
He chuckled and said that there is plenty of room to set up tents and campers there ... ON FLAT LEVEL GROUND.
He said that yes, if a person were to just drive in to the office area, and look around, it would appear to be all rolling hillsides, but behind the cabins it is flat and level, with ample room to set up tents and campers.
He mentioned that a few years ago they had a dozer come in and level a large area there just for tent camping ...
He also said that he's looking foward to seeing all of us in a couple of weeks, and he thinks the weather will be fine ...

You know G Wizz, I have congestive heart failure. So that means I take lasix to get rid of the water. 200 mg of lasix + 450 mile ride = a yellow creek for you to camp by, with possible water fall. Well GW, I'm glad to hear that. From the cabin level that area sure doesn't look level but I'll take his word for it.
Gary, have fun. Careful, a mighty angry little storm just bowled through here today and radar shows there are a few of those things flying around. I'm looking forward to hearing about your trip.

Day two 290 miles down Blue Ridge. I am in Boon NC.Great trip so far, But cold. Tomorow its going to be 80*, All Good with that. Here is some pictures, not all I saw but you have to ride it to see it!!!I ate at a place tonight I can't believe.Danial Boon Inn. The waitress came to the table with a bowl of soup. She told me they have Chicken, Steak, pork chop, mashed potatoes, Au gratin potatoes, chicken gravy, beef gravy, corn, Green beans,Cole slaw, Biscuits, buns, chocolate cake, banana pudding. So I said I will have the Stake. She said, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. What I said is what you get.and if you eat that I will bring you more!!!So I ate every thing and I thought it would be a fortune BUT It was $12.50 + Tip WOW WOW.

Day three was a disappointment to me. I left Boon at mile marker 290,
started south and it was the best for 15 miles then the Blue Ridge was
closed at mile marker 305 (Chimney rock). So I took other routes to
Maggie Valley. Then at 1:00pm I left to check out Hunt's campground. I thought it was about 50 miles away.I WAS WRONG. it was
165 miles each way. Got back to Maggie Vally at 8:35 pm. Total for the
day 675 miles. Way more than I wanted. By the way the wing turned
10,000 miles today.

Now that I see the view from the top, I see what I was missing. From the pavilion it looks like a steady slope up to the house. Just goes to show you - don't send an East Tennessee guy out in search of flat land.
I pitched my new tent yesterday. It's the newer version of the same tent I've been using for 8 years. Boy am I glad I got the practice setting it up. It has a completely different pole system and it made me look like a dummy setting up the first time. Wouldn't want to look like a rookie in a group of experts.
As far as food is concerned, there are lots of choices in the area but I suggest we do a cookout one night. If we make it a potluck - somebody bring a vegetable, maybe some potatoes - I can spring for some cow to throw on the grill. We'll have plenty of chances to sit around a table and be waited on, but if we all pull out some of our kitchen skills (even if we don't get to cook over a fire), I think we can set up a good learning opportunity. And everybody knows that cookout food is better. What do you folks think?

Madisonville is just 15 miles up Hwy 68 and they have a Wal Mart so they must have a grocery store or two. there are also a couple of markets right there in Tellico Plains. I'll shop near home and can pack the meat well enough to last till Saturday night. Others are welcome to bring or go shopping for anything else we'll need. We should (loosely) plan the menu so that we won't be duplicating our efforts.
If everyone is behind this enough to pony up, I'll be happy to get us all some nice NY strips or rib eyes. If not, I can sure spring for burgers and dogs.
And yeah, I'll definitely be bringing some beer but I don't have the cargo capacity to bring enough for myself for the whole weekend, much less for biscuits! I have no problem with going on a beer run or two, just as long as I haven't already had a couple.
Actually, breakfast biscuits sound good too. Motomac, I nominate you for Chairman of the Breakfast Committee.

That grill at Hunt's Pavilion has a side burner. That should work well for a pot of beans.
I'm still not giving up on grilling over coals. The only problem is packing in a grill large enough to hold - how many are we now - almost thirty pieces of whatever we're eating. And seriously G, before anyone even thinks about sending money I have to figure out what I'm doing and how I'm going to do it. The last thing I want to see is a bunch of people enjoying a feast while one poor guy heats up a can of beanie wienies because word didn't get out. If I can get a consensus, I can get up a menu.
I'll have just as much fun eating hot dogs as with T-bones. But I like the steak.

Howdy,
This is Lori, one of the owners of Hunt's Lodge Motorcycle Campground where you guys are headed in a couple of weeks. We've had some hits to our website from the thread about this (thank you!), and while reading through it, I noticed there were some questions that I can answer.
1. There is a grocery store a mile up the road that is going to have your basic stuff. Grilled chuck steaks with bb-q sauce are super yummy, and not terribly expensive.
2. We have an ice machine on the property that puts out 250 lbs. of ice daily, so ice will not be a problem. We also have a few styrofoam coolers that we loan out if needed.
3. The grill is a 5 burner grill with a side burner. I have fit up to 25 burgers on it at a time. We have aluminum pans, utensils, pots, & pans if you'd like to use them. We have a few spices & seasonings available, too, along with ketchup, mustard, & mayo most of the time, so give us a holler - if we have it, you're welcome to it.
4. There is also a Bunn commercial coffeepot with supplies on the north end of building. We usually have a medium strength coffee, so if you guys like it strong, you can double up on it or bring your own.
If there is anything that you guys know you will need that we can take care of for you, let us know and we'll do the best that we can. Looking forward to meeting the rest of the crew in a couple of weeks!

Hello,
Lori here, one of the owners at Hunt's Lodge. Please forgive my intrusion, but I notice there are a couple more questions.
Is there electricity available for my lights and heater? I never did ask that...
There are outlets on the back of the shower house, along the edge of the pavilion closest to the cabins, and on a power pole that is between the cabins and the storage building. If you set up between the cabins and these buildings, you should be able to run an extension cord to the outlets.
I'm still not giving up on grilling over coals.
We have a grate that you can lay across the fire pit. It will probably hold about 8-10 steaks at a time.

Where we are at just got a lot of rain. The rivers and creeks are up, and the waterfalls are roaring. Most of the severe flooding happened in west Tennessee, well away from us.
On the plus side, our grass is growing *really* well now, nice & soft. :D

Lori also had this to say about finding their campground ...
We do have some signs by the road, but regulations keep us from making them too big, or placing them too close to the road.
If you're coming from the south on Hwy 68, you will be heading down hill. When the road starts to level out and you see a slight uphill spot in a relatively straight section of road, get ready to turn right into our driveway.
If you're coming from the North, we are almost exactly 1.2 miles south of the Cherohala Skyway.
You will pass a bbq place on the right with some log cabins, then top a hill, and you will see several red roofs in about a quarter mile away on the left. That's us.
If it helps any at all, we are directly across the road from Mile Marker 26, and it starts counting them at the intersection of Hwy 68 and I-75.
I will try to remember to park my Interceptor at the foot of the driveway when folks are expected to start coming in. I believe your scout from Knoxville mentioned it in his initial report. Even non-riders take notice of it. :D

Easiest side dish is foil packs. Cube some potatos, carrots, onions and a little oil with special seasoning and cook on a grill for about 40 min and yum yum!
Another foil pack receipe is baby carrots, good qaulity oil and smoothered in Lawery's and brown sugar yum yum
Or a big pot of home made chili is another one, I use to love to cool when camping. The big difference in the motorho,e I had all the stuff to do it with. Little more challenging on a bike.....now witha cargo trailer that's a different story!

Well so far, we have spent 4 days on the road heading toward Tellico Plains, via Mr. Guy's place, (Prague, OK), then via Ironheadziggy76's place, (Belton, KY), and then to the Chill Out, (TN). But for the likes of me, I still don't believed I talked Colleen, (Black of Black and Blue), into this trip on bikes, (I'm dreaming of my motohome:rolleyes:). So far we have hit crosswinds so severe that the bikes were in a full tilt:eek:, and I mean a tilt sooo bad, (I wish I could figure out the degree of list), that I actually wished I was on my slow Ural, wishing for that third wheel. Have to take frequent breaks against these exhausting crosswinds winds. Picked up these crosswinds since arriving in Tucumcari, NM. The night we spent at the Tucumcari KOA, we had winds so bad that night that we thought for sure we were going to lose our tent. We could barely muster about 50 to 55 MPH after leaving Tucumcari. The winds died down somewhat crossing Texas, but kicked up again east of Shamrock, TX. We stopped for the night at the Elk City KOA, (which is actually between Elk City and Clinton). The winds kicked up during the night and kept blowing in the morning we left for Mr. Guy's place. We reached the outskirts of Clinton, OK, but the severe crosswinds kept us from reaching his place, which is on the other side of OKC. We could not get over 40 without being pushed about from the gusty crosswinds. My "Discretion is a better part of valor" kicked in and told Colleen that it was not worth risking it just to make the 100 miles or so to Mr. Guy's place. We had to turn back and hold up in Clinton for the night.
Now we are told by the locals of a week of rain.:( Tomorrow we'll head toward Mr. Guy's and hope that the rain is not too severe.

Wow you guys have been having a hell of a time. That's a long truck your taking. I'm in the process of finishing a house for my father in laws estate, he just passed a few months ago. The dam painters jerked me around and now I might be behind schudule, which will screw me out of going. Lori just sent me a email and said she has a room. I'll have to make a decision by tomorrow.
I thought the idea of using a cabin, would be a good idea and I can gather info on how things are done. No big hassle of trying to pack all the wrong stuff.
Lol I even had the people on the horn today from Trailmaster, they had a grey one, but I wanted blk. I think if they had one I would have bought it.

Well Ripshod ...
From what I'm seeing, it looks like the only ones interested in having a cook out & pot luck on Saturday evening is you, Mr. Guy, & myself ....
Haven't seen anyone else, except Motomac with his biscuits, offer to bring, or make anything ...
Does this mean no one else gets hungry on Saturdays?

The RSVP list shows 29 forum members saying "I'm gunna be there", and 11 saying "maybe I will, and maybe I won't".
Is it the largest we'll have all year? Won't know till the dust clears.
Depends on if someone will plan another one.

Wizz we have a cottage in Ludington area, there's a state park in Ludington that would be awesome. I'm not super up on all the riding area's up there because we mainly stay at the cottage.
Another idea would be meet up at my house in illinois. I'm on six acres, leave early in the morning and head around the lake, starting in the Illinois/Wis. side and end in Michigan? Hit a different camping area each night.
Then again there are some nice riding in Illinois along the Illinois river and then up the Mississipi. Base out of our area, actually we have a 4-H directly across from my house and it's all fenced in. Great place to rent and the you coudl have the building for a pot luck or have a guy come in and do a pig roast. Maybe a private band on one night. There's a few good rides with neat bars along the river and then a 4-5 hour round trip that takes you to Savanna Illinois, Bar called Poop's they elt you camp for free on their property, only think about that is they have a band and it gets loud.....not what I think this group is into. Just some food for thought?

If you're serious about putting together a campout somewhere, contact Mellow or Trailace for guidence , they'll help you right out.
It would consist of getting your ducks in a row, (date, place, things to do, etc.) typing up a nice come-on for the "Events" page, and posting it. Then set back and see what shakes out.
Although Ludington State Park is a nice campground, it gets really crowded in the summer time, might present a problem for a large group of riders ...

We had a big weekend up on Whiterock mountain. I took the family for a Mother's Day mini-vacation in Virginia. Where else can a 7-year-old bicycle enthusiast ride 18 miles in a day than the Virginia Creeper Trail? Temps on Saturday night got down to 32 degrees but we slept toasty. I've decided that my new to me Ridgeline is the perfect camping mule.
Thanks to G Wiz and Guy for stepping up. Dan, we'll look forward to the potato salad barring unscheduled blessed events. This is enough response to get me in gear. I'd sure like to hear from some other campers out there. It looks like this will be a real barnraiser of a meetup. Welcome to the forum, Lori. I'll have to get a few extra burgers for the house while I'm at it. Hopefully that'll make up for my not calling when I stopped by for a visit a while back.
So I'm in for about 30 or so servings of burgers and dogs. Unless I get a lot of feedback to the contrary I'll probably just get a 60/40 split between the two. The dogs can be brats or sausages. Speak up if you have a preference. Can anyone commit to supplying the buns?
What I'd really like to see there is a bunch of roasting ears. MacjohnO can work wonders with husk-on corn and some aluminum foil. For that, I'd build a fire early and get a nice bed of coals going.
By the way, I'm bringing foil. I assume everyone carries their own utensils but a stack of plates and a pack of napkins or a roll of paper towels would help. Any more ideas out there?

I'm assuming that this'll be on Saturday night, right? I know some folks are just passing through and won't be there that night, but won't that be the best time to have the cookout?

No, not one shot... I'll try to get out of work by 1pm and make it to Jackson, MS (450ish miles).. then another 400+ miles to Telico Plains. If I can't leave after work I'll still get up early and do it in one shot but once you have your bike setup the way you like it, it will eat the miles.
The key to putting miles on.... don't take long stops... you don't have to speed, but if you stop for gas and it takes 30 mins you'll be on the road all day... if you stop and it takes 3-5 mins to get gas then you'll have a high mileage day.
Also, the ST can do 250-300 miles between gas stops.

BigdogHd: 135 miles / tank on your ultra? My 09 get's 185-220 depending on if I fill it on the stand. Does the 6th gear make that much difference?
Everyone: Safety tip-- staying on a bike for long time can lead to clots in your legs (aka DVT). Luckily there are simple exercises that we can do on the bike to reduce this risk: http://www.preventdvt.org/docs/pdf/DVT_Exercise_Guide.pdf
