Got it on my calender. Can't wait. The seat foam on the XR is old enough to vote, so I just changed it out with a 1 inch taller Baja Designs (Guts) seat foam. If this works out (my rear had the old seat pan memorized after TATOO) I'll ride the bike out. Get some more use out of the Rev Pack and dollar cost average the price down.

It will probably be cool at night and very mild during the day. If we were at Ft Davis it would be more extreme and we've even had snow once there.

There's also an MSTA even happening in lajitas but that's a pretty expensive place to stay so I doubt it's gonna be 100s of bikes... it's a big area, I'm sure it won't be crowded... only during the annual chilli cookoff would that be an issue.

Whoah! Are you saying you're going to ride the XR from Denton to Big Bend?

Arlo
12-06-2009, 04:26 PM
Yup, I'm planning on it. I have it (XR600) down to the subframe right now. I'm adding some bracing to the subframe and also bracing my Scott Summers rack to handle a 35# pack and still be able to ride hard. I'm gonna take 2 days to get there w/ a stop in San Angelo to listen to some good music. Planning on camping now that Rick has taught me 'Motocamping"!
My plans are flexible, so if you want to hook up we can ride down together. I think Toejam may be going too, but I'm not sure.

Rydah
12-11-2009, 10:48 AM
Certainly appreciate the invite, Ron, but think I'd rather truck mine up there. While the ride up there is very tempting, I'm planning to run full knobbies in Big Bend, so that much pavement would'nt do. Plus, I'm still very slowly accumulating smaller pack size gear, and am not quite there yet, so hauling it up there via bike would be a chore. If I happen to pass you on the road though, I'll be sure to honk at ya! Oh, and I'll have some extra tie downs with me ..... just in case :snow1: :storm1: :cold1:

Guy, I don't know what type of knobbies you run but I've had great luck out my Continental TKC80's. I put them on in Tok, AK and I'm still riding them after 6,000+ miles of mostly asphalt. Granted the rear is starting to show quite a bit of wear but they are still hanging in there.

Mr. Guy
12-14-2009, 07:57 PM
Hi Steve,

I ran Dunlop D606s on the TAT trip and a few more times too. I've been real happy with them for dirt riding. I get about 3500 miles on the rear and they are a REAL agressive knobbie. But since riding to work alot, I've been using a set of Avon Road riders.

http://www.americanmototire.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=33_61_75

These have been real good tires for the street and I've got a little over 6000 miles on them and the rear looks like it's about 2/3rds still there.

But I am thinking that if some one is going to lead an offroad ride while down there, I may put the 606s back on, I've got a pair in the shop, and trailer the DR down there. It's kind of a toss up right now. If I ride down, it'll be on the Avons though.

I'm running Kenda K270's on my XR600. I put approx 2000 miles on them on the TAT and approx 700 running around Oklahoma. I'm debating changing the rear before riding to Big Bend - but I may not. They are a pretty agressive knobby that is cheap and wears well.

Arlo
01-02-2010, 01:29 PM
Kenda on the rear I meant to say - can't stand the K270 front. I put one on, rode 20 miles, and came home and took it off. I like the Pirelli MT21 on the front. Pretty agressive and wears well also.

Mr. Guy
01-02-2010, 04:05 PM
I didn't have a problem with the K270 front when I was running them. But mine didn't seem to last to long. Although they did last as long as the Dunlop D606 that I have run and they don't vibrate as bad when they wear to about half gone. A guy I know here in central Ok runs K270s front and rear on his KTM 620 and another runs a K270 rear with a D606 on the front with a DR350.

Guy

Arlo
01-02-2010, 11:19 PM
Guy,
Do you know what kind of mileage they are getting on the 270's? I had a hard time getting the bead to 'pop' evenly on the front 270. (80 psi and lots of soap). It also had a very flimsy sidewall. Toejam had a flat on a front 270 in New Mexico and the tire came off the rim. (Hey Toejam - be sure I got that right.) I recall him saying it locked up the front end - FUN!

I got right at 3000 out of the rear. I get right near 3500 out of a D606. So not much difference there, but the K270s cost a little less than half of a D606.

YIKES, 80 psi, I think I would have wet my pants by then. LOL I never had that much trouble seating mine. Must be the different wheels.

My son and I just got back from Big Bend on Sunday morning. We had some vacation time and decided to check it out so we went in my truck! We spent 2 nights (Dec. 31st & Jan. 1st) camping in Chisos Basin. Great time! I highly recommend the hike up "the little hill" behind the lodge!

Temps were 19 the 1st night and 30 the second. My son and I were very comfortable however, with the campground nearly full, we heard a few automobiles running during both nights!

Make sure you bring the right gear! Our cycles don't give us but one option; a cold ride home!

I may join ya'll to go back, if I get the time!

Rick, enjoyed the slide show. Thanks! I have a few questions about this event. I've made a few ST events. I assume this one is similar. Meet at the designated spot, ride a little, sight see a little, shoot the breeze a lot, eat, sleep repeat.

On one of the first slides is a red circle on the map. Is that the camp location? Is there good riding for non dual sports? Paved or rock? Are the local facilities decent? Sounds like fuel is few and far between with one at the on site store? Is there anything I might need to prepare for like not pitching over fire ants, etc.?

Pretty much same as an ST event... the only difference is the motocampers handshake. Those that don't know it split the bill for everyone. Come to think of it, I think Rick and I are the only two at the moment P^

On an ST you shouldn't have gas problems. There's gas at the campground and in panther junction and study butte. Some bikes with small tanks that only get 100-140 miles might need to gas up at panther junction.

There are some great paved roads in the area. The road to chisos basin in the center of the park is great, but short...

The roads around the park are nice but you do have to watch your speed.

The road from study butte to lajitas and presidio is known as river road and very very very very fun... you'll probably enjoy those as there are lots of turns that are just after a hill that you don't see 'til the last min.. just like some of those Missouri roads.

Gotta watch out for jackalopes however, they're everywhere.

First thanks for the Taj Mahal pics.
Next, I thought it was the Javalinas that kept some of you awake. Make sure you check around your tent before retiring to see that Doritos aren't sprinkled around it.
Next, you can get airborne/will on the River Road!!! Wing's and ST's have left the road on some of the woops. One ST did it packing double!!!

Jackalope? It originates in Lubbock, right?

Mac, I just bought an inverter to charge the phone via bike port after watching you at NatSTOC. It's fun planning for a trip like this.

One caveat, if it is just absolute crap weather here in Missouri on departure date, would I be accepted if I come in the Duramax?

I'll never forget those bucks sparring in the pines on the way down. I never saw antlers on bucks that early/late!!!

Mac, I have seen anters still on bucks as late as April 7th in WV. 3 or 4 times have seen them still have horns in March, those are very late cases but it does happen occasionally.

I'm definitely going to have to plan on making this some year. Had a great time there last September, west Texas is one of my favorite places.

Jeff, miles and miles of fantastic riding for the ST in the area.

Beemer Chef;

Glad you are going to make it.

Now our side car dogs (Audrey & Kirby) can meet Spirit!
I'm sure they will have many stories to share about their co-pilot adventures!

Colleen

That can only be a future Kodak moment as they say!!! How about a photo now... Spirit cannot wait that long... he is already licking his chops!

Just got back from the Park by the way. Cold and windy today... I am sure this will change soon...

Dogs rule the World, no one but me knows that however... That is how smart they are! They talk... they ignore... they play mind games...
Are you fed? are you clothed? Dr's visits for free? Shelter with no rent? Pedicure... manicure... I doubt it!!! They are...
The only sad part as I am very involved with rescues, are thousands of them needing some good homes... The thousands of them being abused... But, one by one so many also are stepping in to save them. That is all we can do...
Besides that yoyo having his own TV show now... don't get me started on that one!... Ok... sorry to... stray from the topic!!!

Love your set ups!!! 2 hacks... this is going to be too much fun...
Would you be game to take East River Road to Mariscal Mines? Dirt road but not too bad... actually like a highway in some places. Will ask the Mr or Mrs Ranger how the roads are after yesterday's rain... could barely get out today!
Be well... Ara & Spirit

That is a big campground and it looks like there are a couple other motorcycle groups that will be in the park at the same time.

I can find G wizz and I know Mr. Guy, but I have no idea what the rest of you ride or look like.

Yeah, not good coverage... I think ATT has some inside the park but in the past it's been an opportunity to unplug from the world.

There is a pay phone at the headquarters and probably one at the store near the campground, I can't remember.

ATT has some coverage at the north park entrance at 385 and some towards the campground and again in study butte/terlingua.

I don't see a lot of verizon coverage... if someone needs to check in I don't mind lending them my phone for a quick call.

As for our plans, we still are on hold waiting for a couple of Drs. to give us some info before we decide if we can come or not.

I just spent 4 days at Cottonwood campground on the west end of the park near Santa Elena canyon. Temps were 32-40 at night and about 70-75 during the day. It was the first time most of the camp sites were occupied in all my visits to Big Bend. And a sign at Panther Junction said all the RV hookups at Rio Grande Village were in use.

Cell phone coverage at Panther Junction but pretty iffy in the rest of the park. And the new rules governing firearms go into effect this week. I believe the new rules allow loaded weapons in the park.

Will be riding down from El Paso on Friday morning to meet Tom Padden. I was down there last weekend on the GS and a friend hauled my KLR down so we could explore all the unpaved routes in Big Bend. The GS would have done it but it is hard to keep up with someone on a 250 lb lighter dual sport.

Anyway, if anyone is coming through El Paso on Thursday I can offer a shower and perhaps a place to camp.

And I discovered that one of my favorite events in west Texas is next weekend at Sul Ross University in Alpine-the Texas Cowboy Poetry Festival. A couple of my favorite performers are booked on Saturday afternoon and evening so this gives me an excuse to attend both the rally and the festival.

I hope the weather is as nice as it was for the the wife and me this past week. Just got back today from hiking and camping in the Chisos mtns. It was in the 20's one night, but otherwise just perfect.

For the hiking expedition:
If the 10 mile Emory Peak hike (and 3000+ft of climbing) sounds like too much, may I suggest the Lost Mine trail. The trail head in on the road into the basin.

4.8 miles round trip, a bit over 1000' up, with great views all the way. I have to do it every time I go to BB and IMHO it's the best bang for the buck in the whole park (next to spending the night on the south rim).

You guys have fun and watch out for the javelina(s), bears, panthers, and deer.

PS: RGV store has a fine selction of wine, no kidding.

There's hiking at Moonshine? I suppose you could call standing in line hiking...

Trailace typically pulls those late night rides in... I would suggest against it.. tons of deer all over the place and on 90 between Del Rio and that big bridge we once saw hundreds of eyes on the sides of the road... we literally were moving at 30 mph because there were so many. They officer at the border station just outside Del Rio thought we were nuts.

If you do it... just don't get in a rush.. and that's hard because the hwy is long and straight.

Well, once again we are not gonna make it. Gotta have another CT scan in the morning and then see the Dr. on Fri to discuss options.

Ya'll have a good time and be safe.

For those wondering about weather conditions, this is a cool site where you can plug in your route. I haven't seen where you can put all your exact points but you can cut it down to major cities or each of your trip legs and see a quick summary of the weather at a specific time.

I get to leave tomorrow during 50% snow showers and get to 70% until I hit San Angelo... still getting to almost 50 today so I don't think the roads will be in bad shape.
