I stayed at Fort Wilkins State Park just outside Copper Harbor, MI on August 5, 2009. The staff at the entrance to the campground requests that you ride through and pick a suitable spot that isn't reserved or occupied before you pay for your site.

Michigan has a camping permit system that is $8/night or $20/year on top of the price of the campground. I ended up paying $31 to camp in this campground which I deem to be excessive for any campground. They don't have any primitive sites so all have electric hook-ups and water. This I was happy about as I needed to charge my camera battery.

Once again, I chose a site near the water (Lake Fanny Hode) and not too close to the bathrooms. The campground was full but it was the quietest place I've ever stayed. You could hear a pin drop by 9:30 pm.

The State Park has many attractions but I only had time to scratch the surface of all that is offered. It is about the only place to camp near Copper Harbor that I found. I would recommend staying here because the surrounding areas is beautiful and it is a neat Park.

Lake Fanny Hode on the right and Lake Superior on the left. The State Park is directly in the middle.

Looks like a beautiful spot. I agree, $31 is a pretty steep fee.

There is a large private campground on lake Fanny-Hoe in Copper Harbor that is a less expensive than the state park.
Nice campground, with grassy campsites, and clean bathrooms, and within spittin distance of downtown Copper Harbor. Turn right on the first street after the Town Hall as you come into town, you'll run right into it. P^
It's called Lake Fanny-Hoe Campground ... ( who'd a thought?)
I stay outa the Michigan State Park campgrounds, as they charge almost as much as the cost of a motel room, just to plop a tent.
We spent two nights in Copper Harbor, just about the same time as Bug Dr.
Will agree, it's beautiful up there in the Copper Harbor area, would love to go up in the fall when the leaves change color.

I looked for another campground....guess I didn't look hard enough. I was thinking the same thing about seeing the trees turn. I wonder when that would be, Sept 15 or something? I would imagine Autumn would come much sooner in the UP than in Arkansas. I bet it's pretty though.
