View Full Version : Fifty Passes in How Many Hours?
Trailace
06-30-2009, 11:57 PM
This ride idea started when Flingshot and I both saw a 50 passes in 50 hours (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=419868) thread on the ADV site. He asked if I was going to try to do it but the dates did not work for me. Then we talked about how beautiful the area is and that we should just take our time and do it ourselves. Besides, this would be a good pre-ride for the TAT planned later in the year. The third character on the ride would be Jkrup47 who hangs out with me on the Tuesday NW Houston bike night.

Day 1
Since the only passes we have in Houston are overpasses we decided it would be best if Josh and I went to meet Scott at his home in Denver CO. We departed Houston Tuesday night after work and made it a little passed Amarillo TX. We camped at Rosita CG (N35 27.865 W101 50.644) near Lake Meredith just off 287. (Free) Sorry, to save time we would be trucking the bikes up to CO.
Day 2
With the great start on Tuesday we could just take our time today. Not a lot to say just a few morning pics of the campground.

Josh’s slept late.

CO here we come.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/578796219_LEyxH-M.jpg
We made it to Scott’s around 5:00 and set up camp at Campfling campground just north of Denver CO.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/578799005_MieU5-M.jpg
The food was great!

Bikes wanted out so they could play.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/578799803_Bz5dB-M.jpg
Just waiting for the fun, however, since we were using our camping gear we would not be packing up until morning.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/578800773_6d2e7-M.jpg
We also had a nice fire.

Sorry. I'm no cook. Should have let Cyndi do it. LOL :grill1:

Day 3
Let the fun begin but first we had to get to the dirt.
Fling in front.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/579724788_6FPA5-M.jpg
Josh in the rear.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/579724334_xbUZf-M.jpg
The first fun was on Rampart Range Road.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/579726361_Wcrdw-M.jpg
Then it was on to the passes. First up, Ute Pass. If there was a sign we missed it. Then more pavement to Wilkerson Pass.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/579727716_5ojgm-M.jpg
Trout Pass
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/579729300_tydsH-M.jpg
We took a slight detour to Canyon City to check out the Royal Gorge Bridge but did not spend the $24 a person to walk across. Last time I was here I drove across but now it’s just a big tourist trap. The bridge and gorge are still amazing to see.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/579730437_DwGNZ-M.jpg
Next up on the list was Hayden Pass. Scott’s demon book said it was a moderate trail. The east side was steep with sections of small loose rock and ledges. Nothing too hard but you had to pay attention or drop off a thousand feetl on the left.
Scott right before we head up.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/579731763_JsfQF-M.jpg
Boy look how easy that looks but it is a lot steeper then the picture shows.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/579732263_o3S2U-M.jpg
We only stopped one time on the way up so we have no pictures to show. Once at the top we took the mandatory sign pic.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/579732800_tqRZc-M.jpg
The demon book also said the west side was a little easier then the east so down the west side we go. About 2 miles down you hit a seep section with big loose rock that goes on for about a half-mile or so.
Here is Scott coming down.

Where is Josh?

Oh there he is.

http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/579734660_CfSKM-M.jpg
Here is how the conversation went.
Me: So Josh you OK?
Josh: I’m fine.
Me: Do you want to pick up the bike?
Josh: No not yet I’m resting.
Me: OK just let me know when.
Josh: How about never.
After a few minutes Josh was feeling better and we all made it down to this nice overlook.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/579736595_sYsZH-M.jpg
From here to the bottom it was a piece of cake.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/579737340_oqtvJ-M.jpg
Quick stop at Poncha Pass.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/579739146_Zh5RZ-M.jpg
We went to Poncha Spring for a bite to eat and then on to fine a place to camp. We tried to camp at O'Haver Lake campground but it was full so we headed up Marshall pass to see if we could find a place to cowboy camp. About a mile up from O'Haver Lake CG we found a great spot all to ourselves. By the way it was now dark, raining and muddy.
We set up out tents and started a nice fire.

Scott and Josh said they heard strange animal noises but I slept all night and never heard a thing. I bet it was just Scott snoring.

Don't worry. It might end up being an annual event.:DP^ Of course we would have to add a street only route as well for the big supertanker crowd.

Day 4
Sometime in the night it had stopped raining but that would not last long. However the site we found last night looked even better in the daylight. The price was just right, free. If you’re in the area you can find it here. N38 26.051 W106 08.206 (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=N38+26.051+W106+08.206&ie=UTF8&ll=38.434182,-106.137055&spn=0.00203,0.003449&t=h&z=18)
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580574216_npv5A-M.jpg
You can see O'Haver Lake from Marshall pass road as you’re going up.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580574676_gDU92-M.jpg
Scott takes an action shot of me.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580575542_TpGEn-M.jpg
Kids will be kids and it’s a good thing he missed or I would have kicked his bike over. LOL

Marshall Pass
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580577239_fhMkN-M.jpg
Back to Poncha Spring for a breakfast snack.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580580513_qsA4i-M.jpg
Then it was on to Hermit Pass the funny thing was as soon as we turned on to Hermit Rd out of Westcliffe I realized I was on this road during the TAT ride in 2008. This year we would be going up, last year we just camped in the woods.
Hard to forget this road.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580580704_ETLH9-M.jpg
Ok give me your opinion on something. In the picture below you see my bike fully loaded for a 2 or more week trip. There are 25 ponds in the rear bags and 8 pounds in the tank bag. It seems to work well for me but was wondering if I would benefit by adding side bags and lowering the weight a little? The racks would add about 5 pounds to the set up. Ok back to the report.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580581255_muYCd-M.jpg
Here is Scott going up, at this point we are above 12,000 ft.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580581647_kLAWq-M.jpg
The winds were blowing hard and it was raining off and on, you can’t tell it in this picture but the road was flowing like a river in most places.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580581986_vX6uk-M.jpg
This is were we turned around because the snow looked like it covered the road a little further up the pass. We’re at 12,500 ft here.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580582287_9WToN-M.jpg
Back down we go.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580582473_itkqT-M.jpg
Hey look who we found at 12,200 ft.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580582747_T65ia-M.jpg
Wait up guys.

Hermit road looking down.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580583723_sAoVt-M.jpg
We’re off to see Pass Creek Pass but we found an old school house for sale along the way. You can have the schoolhouse and 35 acres for $90,000.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580584078_XgFMW-M.jpg
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580584280_zBB4j-M.jpg
We had to spend a little time fixing Josh’s tail rack.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580584446_vRFVk-M.jpg
By the time we made it to Pass Creek Pass it was raining.

La Veta Pass

North La Veta Pass has a few cool buildings on it and a homemade sign.

http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580586641_QMs5V-M.jpg
The next pass was Mosca but the Devil box took us south and to the wrong end of the pass. We were told it was a one-way pass and we were on the wrong side. %^$#
Passed this on the way to Mosca, boy that bike looks fast.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580587311_96ptm-M.jpg
A few cowboys working.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580587722_HsquM-M.jpg
We were also told that the road to Medano pass was closed due to fast and deep water. With rain all around we decided to call it a day and camp at the Great Sand Dunes Oasis campground. N37 39.174 W105 34.967 (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=N37+39.174+W105+34.967+&sll=38.434182,-106.137055&sspn=0.00203,0.003449&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=16)

Here is Scott getting the bad news about Mosca and Medano.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/580588725_67GNs-M.jpg
After we set up camp Josh and I went to eat and Scott worked on a new route for tomorrow. When we returned from eating we talked over the options for the next day;s ride and Scott put the finishing touches on them. They tell me there was lots of noise but again I slept like a baby.

Day 5
Today would be a good day to ride and after yesterday’s news and Scott wanting to get more passes I had everyone up early.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/582069938_BwkXd-M.jpg
The air was cool but dry and we had passes to see. Heading north toward Poncha Spring for gas and breakfast. What a long straight road it was.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/582070686_JArSc-M.jpg
Here’s the first pass of the day, Monarch Pass 120 miles from camp by 9:00.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/582070947_EfHC3-M.jpg
Then a little dirt to Old Monarch Pass
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/582071324_4rRFG-M.jpg
The team was having fun playing in the dirt.

The great town of Pitkin!
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/582073308_Nosc6-M.jpg
A nice guy in Pitkin said we should check out the Alpine Tunnel so up we go. I told Scott this was going to cost us a few passes but it was well worth it.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/582074624_TsfTG-M.jpg
A 4-wheel drive club restored this old water tower. Great work guys!
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/582073626_n5suA-M.jpg
Scott forgot to strap something at the last stop and almost paid a big price for it.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/582073806_ovqkQ-M.jpg
If you have never been to the Alpine Tunnel area you need to go. Not a lot to do but it’s a great ride up and you can feel the history in the air.

You see so many old building just falling apart and wonder what happened.

Josh was not feeling to good at this point but after a little rest in the shade he was back on the bike.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/582080113_fpRJj-M.jpg
The road from Ice Mountain to Cotton Wood Pass was full of 2 foot jumps. We had so much fun we forgot to stop and take a picture.
The last pass of the day Cottonwood Pass.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/582080306_X3Ny4-M.jpg
I forget what this was about but I think his lights were on but not working.
http://trailace.smugmug.com/photos/582080946_dJVCr-M.jpg
Just north of Twin Lake we found a campground but it was full however, just a little way up the road, we found a better, free camp area. Here's some pics of our beloved leader.
You da man Trailace! I can't wait to see the XChallenge's tire in the Pacific Ocean!!!!P^
Scott was the true leader of this ride he planned it and did all the hard work. All I did was lead a few times to get us to the beginning of a pass. Scott is the man not me. P^

Day 6
Last night was the coldest for the trip so far but that just made for good sleeping. I know that I will be back to the 100° weather in Texas soon. I was up again before everyone but did not wake them. I knew they were tired trying to keep up with me all week. LOL I packed and loaded the bike and still there was no movement so I took a walk to check out the area.
Nice road to drive on.

This creek was going so fast you could hear it all the way at our camp.

Parry Creek Campground was just across the road from our free site.

Can you see the squirrel?

When I returned back to camp there was still no movement so I just started up my bike. Man that got them moving, of course they both said they were up and only stayed in their tent so they would not wake anyone.
I have to give them some credit because they were packed and ready to go in no time.

Scott worked on today’s route last night and first on the list was Independence Pass.

The ride to Weston Pass had a little of everything. To bad the pavement section goes through a private neighborhood with slow for children signs. The nice dirt road quickly changed to a rocky road then to a jeep trail. Came around a corner and found a young lady stalled half way up a hill on a 2 smoke. I stopped to see what the issue was and she said she could not get it started. I kicked started it for her and road it up the hill. Then it was back on my bike for one more run up the hill.
It was fun and here was our reward, Weston Pass.

I did not take one pic on the way up but here is Josh going down.

Next up Hagerman, I was in front and road nonstop until I saw this. Those walls are over 10’ tall.

The GPS worked well for us but had a hard time finding Tennessee Pass. As luck would have it we did.
Tennessee Pass.

The plan was to run over to Alam for lunch but to get there we would need to take CR3 over Mosquito Pass but it was closed. I did not know this when we started out because I was just following the GPS.
We did see the old train on the way.

Once we figured out what the GPS was trying to do we made a quick plan change and headed back to Leadville for lunch. Rather then just go back the way we came I changed a few settings on the GPS and found a great new route with some cool old minding stuff.
Check it out.

There was one steep downhill section of loose rocks that had us all working to keep upright. No pics I wonder why.
Lunch in Leadville was good but it was time to start heading for home.

Man what a great 4 days of riding with 2 great guys. I was sorry it was over but I’m sure we will do a part II next year. I want to give a big thanks to Scott, his wife Cindy and his kids for entertaining Josh and myself. They made us feel right at home and are just a Great family and friends. Scott also planned this ride start to finish and except for a few small issues it went off without a hitch. Thanks Scott you’re the man.
This was a pre-run for the TAT ride we have planed in September and it looks like we’re ready to go.
