View Full Version : 50 Passes in 50 Hours?

Hey All,
I have been following a thread over on ADV and there are a group of hard core crazys that keep coming up with these rides. The latest is 50 passes in Colorado in 50 hours. To make it more interesting, they included some of the most difficult dirt passes in the state.
Originally this was going to be an IBA (Iron Butt Association) ride and since I dont have an IBA card and since I usually want things that I dont have, I bought in to it.
Now they have dropped the IBA idea and are just doing it to see if they can. Still cool.
However the other night I was talking to Trailace on the phone to see if he was interested in this ride and he got me thinking. (very dangerous)
His take on it was that it would be a great ride but why hurry through some of the most beautiful country in the world. Smart guy.
So now I think i've got it figured out.
Coming up in June, Leave on a Thursday, early in the AM, get home Sunday night. No Schedule. No reservations.
3 nights camping, 1000 miles minimum, 60 passes, at least 10 of them dirt. $300 budget.
And just like Forest Gump, if I'm hungry I'll eat. If I'm tired I'll sleep. And if I have to, you know, I'll go.
This will give me a chance to break in my new seat, get some snoring practice for the upcoming TAT trips :D and also see how well my gear packs (and works).
When I nail down the exact date, I will post a pre-ride report with pics of my loaded and farkled steed.

Here is a link to the map that was created by the other group for 50 passes.
I will be working on my idea of a route in the next day or so. I think I can add a few more passes on the trip down and also add a few to replace the ones that aren't open yet.

Three guys is a crowd. Did I say that? Seriously, come one come all but don't bring anything bigger than a 650 or so unless you want to skip the offroad passes.

Ok, I've narrowed it down to the 18th-21st of June. or the 25th-28th of June.
Talk amongst yourselves and get back to me if you want to partake.
TJ Willy,
You can come for 4 days, it's not like your wife's pregnant or something.
I can meet y'all in Pueblo if you're coming from down south. Thats where I think I want to start bagging passes.
Still working on the route.

If I could go it would have to be 18th-21st of June. It will be tight since I have a meeting in Dallas on the 16th & 17th. But I will work on moving that.

Let me know for sure when you can. As it turns out, that is the best weekend for me as well. Still working on a route that will add some fun passes.
I am not at all an expert on this mapping business but this will be good practice and an easy one for me to start with.

Shouldnt be too hard to find 60 or so fun passes from this list eh? Man, I love Colorado!!!
http://www.concours.org/co/Colorado-Mountain-Passes.xls
After you open the link click on page 2 (official passes) on the spreadsheetP^
This list shows 495 passes in Colorado and some have links to additional info.

Holy crap. You could explore over one pass and turn around exploring back over another and never even leave the same area... crazy... I must admit, some quads (four wheelers) would be great fun.
I grew up on a four wheeler. None of my friends lived close to me so my childhood was spent making trails with my four wheeler and my dog.

Ok, I got the route mapped out (on paper). Looks like closer to 1300 miles including the trip down. Leaving Denver at 7am Thursday, June 18th.
My gear is ready, just need to decide if I want to change my rear tire 1. before I go, 2. at the halfway point or 3. when I get back. :think1:. It's a 606 with about 50% left.
One other issue is wether or not some of these dirt passes are even open or passable yet. I have a list of 67 on the route so I should still get more than 50 even if I have trouble or have to turn back on a few and re-route due to snow or deep water.
Looks like it's going to be a blast! I dont want to wish any part of my life away but the 18th could be tomorrow and I wouldn't complain.
The extra time for snow to melt and mud holes to dry will be ok I guess.
Anyway pre-ride report including gear and bike pics coming soon!!!

Hey Rick,
Nice talking to you on the phone again.
I sent you a PM with the planned starts and stops.
As for the 606. Not sure, this is my first one and I have about 1500 miles on it and it's about half gone. I dont like to run my tires all the way down so I think I'll be at 2500 at the most and that's pushing it.
Talk to you soon!

A few of the passes will be a bit more difficult and may contain sections where we have to help each other through. After taking your ST on this stuff, I doubt if it will work ever again on the pavement.:D
There is no doubt you could smoke us on the paved passes. My bike screams for mercy at about 70.

I found this line on ADV.
Having said that I beleive Hankock, Tomchi and Mosquito type passes should be the max level of difficulty encountered. Hayden would be over the top.
So if they would have been open we could have done them.:D
