For those interested... I know I love to see what folks do to their rides.

First off, wrenching on the bike is part of the experience so I do all my own work. Some of it I have photographic logs for - I will link to those. Lots, I do not. I have good intentions, I just get busy. :)

Hey Willy...
Going down your "bling" list, One item I don't see is a driveline stabilizer for your Harley.
How come that is? Is it you don't have a need for one, or is it you haven't gotten to it yet?
Might I suggest the "Bagger Brace"? It not only looks awesome, it also works great, and won't break the bank. P^
Oh, and welcome to the forum. :)

I have heard of those, but have not seen or felt the need for one. I have friends that have them installed and should take a ride on their bikes to see if I can tell a difference, but thus far, I have not felt the need for it.

I forgot to add: HD Isolated Drive Kit.

Now that is one piece of equipment that actually pisses me off. Harley found the need to make it standard in 08 and above but made us 07 guys buy the damn thing. It should have been a recall. I found it online for $200 shipped with bearing pressed on and I just installed it myself. Guys were paying over $500 at the dealerships for that kit installed. Ridiculous. Don't even get me started on the MoCo. I'm not a fan. Love the bikes though. P^

But the kit is nice. Makes 6th gear much more usable. I went to a 150 tire in the back and it is a bit of squeeze getting the ISD and rear wheel all pieced together and in place.

The install is easy but two sets of hands would be optimal. I had one set of hands, a bike lift, and I used my floor jack to hoist everything up. Definitely doable, but I'd rather had some help.

Keep your eye on the bearing in your ISD. The ones that were installed on the pre 08's were prone to premature bearing falure for some reason.

As for the stabilizer .. Harley knew thery were having handling problems on the dressers with aggressive riders. That is why they went to a stronger stiffer frame with four motor mount locations in 09.
On the pre 09's, the aftermarket stabilizers, are known to help hold the rubber mounted motor in place.
With the motor / transmission case being part of the location where the swingarm is attached, it helps to keep the whole assembly from flexing.
I'm kind of an aggressive rider at times, I find myself going into the curves harder now, with the Bagger Brace installed, without the bike getting that weavy feeling. I also find the bike just plain handles better now, it's actually more fun to ride ... The back end doesn't dance on the tar snakes anymore.
As an added plus, the bike pulls the trailer better now too.

Thanks for the info. I have heard about the bearing issue and checked mine out after the last trip. No marks on belt, rim, and no sign of excess grease. No excessive play. A friend was actually told by the MoCo that backing the bike up "aggravates" the problem. Just plain ridiculous... I know the belt walks left to right and vice versa when transitioning forward and reverse... but HD engineering just plain eludes me sometimes. As much as I have my bike apart, I could go on and on. :D :D :D

As for the stabilizer, maybe I will have to look into that as well as I would consider myself an aggressive rider. And I use the bike sometimes for MSF drilling which can put me over on the floorboards. I ran it through a police (motorcop) demo course last weekend. Those reach back bars made it tricky! I hate that wag on the tar snakes and it does feel loose in the corners sometimes. I just thought that was part of the experience.

By the way, I rode an 09 MotorCop bike that same weekend. As well as one of their 07 models. I gotta say, I HATE that 09. That thing is a bitch to throw around. Longer. Heavier. 35 lbs makes a difference. It was like steering a barge man. My 07 and especially the PD's 07 felt very nimble compared to that monster. I am sure that bike is great for the long open straight aways...

I agree about the handling of the 09 Harleys. I wouldn't give up my 08 for a new one, even if it was free.
Was told the Ultras were closer to 50 # heavier, and it feels like it too.
I also don't need a larger tire on the back then what I'm running now.
Have you priced those new rear 17" tires? WOW ! I think I could put a new set of tires all the way around on my car for what they want for one.

No I have not. But I am not surprised. To have my local stealer put on ONE tire they want $310. Again, ridiculous... seems like my favorite word...

I got my 35# number from the motorcop that rides the 09. I have not looked at the specs. I agree it feels like 50 or more after riding my 07.

The one dude I know that rides an 09 is not a "cone weaver". He is a rider but more in the realm of just touring. And since that is what the Ultra is really about, then I guess good on him. But I still like to crank it up a notch, drill, try to keep up with the sport tourers. And I don't believe I would enjoy owning an 09 at this point.

HEY! thanks Joe!!!

I will remember that next time the Ole Gal is due for some new shoes!

For the DS bike, I wrestle those on with nothing but some irons. They are easy. Can't do that with the big bike tires. Did you change the tires on your Wing or did you start with the ST?

I've personally never been real happy with Dunlaps. I have had a lot better luck both with tire mileage and handling using Mitzeler tires.
As soon as the Dunlaps that came on the Classic, are worn out, Mitzelers will be taking their place.
Wife also loves 'em on her Heritage too. Think she'd kill me if I put Dunlaps back on her bike.

Haven't done a wing tire change. I just got the changer last year and have done mostly ST tire but have also done changes for a ninja 250, triump and a couple bmw wheels.

I have not tried the E3's. I like having a 150 on back and they don't have the E3 in that size. I have friends that swear by them. I really like my Avons. At this point, I can't see myself trying anything different.

If I did, it would be E3 and they would have to sell a 150.

I have used E3's in both 60 & 70 series on my wing. They last 14 to 19K. They get noisy in turns as they wear, but I have never had one slip. I'll use Metzelers on the front. But now I'm back to a Pirelli Eufori Run Flat 195/55/16 on the rear. The last one got 22K. I won a E3 in a raffle and just changed it out. 18,600 miles.

TJ Willy

Those are some impressive miles out of a rear tire. And true to form from what I have heard.

The pic below shows a flat Avon and the new one I ordered to replace it. I picked up a nail on the road somewhere and it went flat a gas station about 1.5 miles from the house. I had to duck walk the bike all the way home (it was late at night) on the flat.

The tire had almost 10k miles on it. Including a 1500 mile plus run to Eureka Springs. A few of those miles were gravel where I had no place being on the bagger.

Anyway, I really wanted to see how many miles I was gonna get from the tire. It was holding up well. Another note, for duck walk home, I was on the sidewall. The rim was saved and the tire showed no visible wear so I assume they are made from some good rubber.

It has been quite awhile since I researched it, but I think the useful load rating on this particular Avon is higher than that of the E3 by about a 100lbs which lends itself to a shorter lifespan. The E3 is a heavier compound of rubber giving long miles. The Avon is softer and "stickier" in the curves. I don't think one could expect as many miles from the Avon.

They are both excellent in the rain.

TJ Willy, I switched to Venoms after the stock Dunlops on my Road King were toast at 6,600 miles. I don't know why but the Dunlops with the wide whitewall don't seem to last. They must be a different compound than the other Dunlops that Harley uses on it's Glides. A friend of mine just replaced the rear on his Road King at about 7,000 miles. I couldn't wait to get the white walls off because I'm not real big on cleaning them. :p

I like the way the bike handles with the Avons. And I absolutely love them in the rain. I will sacrifice some mileage to get the handling and wet weather performance. P^

Clamper
04-11-2009, 10:05 AM
Dunlop has re-done the E3 and the load cap is 972 lbs. about a 100 more than they used to be. I have become a slower rider over the last few years, and it seems tires have been lasting a little longer, and my gas mileage too. I now use dyna beads in the tires, but in the past have used marbles, steel ball bearings, and regular tire weights. Keep them balanced and aired up.

I'll throw my 2 cents in about Harley tires. I've been running the stock type Dunlops on my Road Glide for 55000 miles and have been real happyP^. I got about 18000 out of the rears and over 20000 on the fronts.
Now I bought custom wheels with Metzlers and like the way they handle but I'm kinda worried about the load rating so I'll just see how the work.

Yes, I got that after doing a few sets of tires and it makes a huge diff... one little trick I saw on one of their videos was to place the mount bar, then the yellow thingy and then pull the yellow thingy around on the rim pulling the tire over the lip until you get to the last 20% which is when you need the real leverage of the mount bar... in the past, I'd start rotating the bar to get to that last 20% and since mine is a hitch mount changer, I'd run out of room.. it's those little tips that really make the change easy.

Thanks Joe

If you are going to be in Georgia, north west of atlanta and need tires. I know a shop that will mount and balance free when you buy the tire from him. You do need to bring just the wheel, he charges to remove and install the wheel. I just put a Metezler ME880 Marathon MT90B16, on my Night Train. $155.
