In June of 2004 I camped in Jenny Lake Campground in Grand Teton Natl Park. Jenny Lake is a first come/ first served campground, plus no RV's or trailers/pop-ups are allowed. So Jenny Lake only serves tent campers or people sleeping in their pickups or vans. The park service information says that Jenny Lake fills up early, and recommends an early arrival for site selection.

I arrived around 1PM and Jenny Lake Campground was at the most 1/3 occupied and this didn't change much, lots of available camp sites that night. I was there in early June and Grand Teton is still pretty chilly at that time, temps in the 30's overnight and in the 60's during the day. Grand Teton NP is bear country, so a steel box is provided at each camp site. I never saw any indication or trace of bears, but am willing to believe the park service on this subject. All of my gear went into that bear box overnight. The park service has a small grocery store at Jenny Lake, plus a tourist boat service for boat rides on Jenny Lake.

The campsites were very nice with a table, bear box, a nearby water faucet and an improved spot to pitch your tent. The road though the campground is paved. The restroom facilities had real toilets and cold running water for washing up. The restroom was well kept up when I was there. I really liked this campground and recommend it.

In the pictures showing the Tetons and Jenny Lake, you can see the tourist boats out on the lake.

As you can see, the road commission has put in a turnout right there. It was almost magical to come around the final curve and there in all their majesty was the first sight of the Tetons. You just have to pull off and marvel at the grandure of the mountains. The low scudding clouds show the kind of day it was, overcast and cold, but the thrill of that first sight warmed the day up for me.

I've got a picture that's not scanned of a Mother bear and cub crossing the road in front of my bike near Jenny lake.

Seeing your outfits reminded me how cold it was there in mid June. I set up camp in the early afternoon and could already tell it was going to get chilly in the evening. So after setting up camp, I rode into downtown Jackson and wandered around looking for a camping supply store. When I found one, I bought a pair of nylon windbreaker overpants to cover my blue jeans and a thermal pullover for under my leather jacket. The windbreaker hiking overpants made a major difference on my legs. I now have better riding clothing for the cold but that trip to the Grand Tetons was a learning experience. The next morning when going through Teton Pass outside of Jackson, my dash was showing 34 degrees. Heated grips and my Widder vest also made the ride enjoyable.

That?s funny after he did that the first time he started doing it in every photo. I had to bitch at him to keep him for doing it. Sometimes I won.
